Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become one of the most wasteful shopping events of the year. In 2024 alone, 81.7 million people shopped in-store and 87.3 million shopped online, spending a whopping $74.5 billion globally and generating untracked millions of tons of packaging waste, CO₂ emissions, and landfill-bound returned items.

While the most sustainable choice is to skip the sales altogether, we get it. Times are tough and in a world of ever-rising prices, sometimes a sale is the difference between being able to buy better or even buy at all.

Instead of supporting fast fashion sales that flood closets with cheaply made garments that won’t be around by next Black Friday, it’s more important than ever to turn our thrifty sights on ethical and eco-friendly Black Friday deals instead (if you must shop at all).

• Savvy Rest has a 20% Black Friday sale beginning on November 19th and will run to December 3rd. The code you’ll need is simply BLACKFRIDAY to save on organic sofas, mattresses, toppers, pillows, and basically anything else you need to build a better bedroom.
• Yoloha Yoga invites us all to roll out a stylish cork yoga mat and celebrate Green Friday with 40% off storewide. The discount applies not only to their yoga mats, but yoga props, mindfulness journals, and more.
• Caraway’s sale will start on 30 October and run all the way through to 31 December. They’re offering up to 20% off with the discount being applied in tiers based on the order amount (the bigger the order, the more the discount, scaling form 10%-20%). I’d use this opportunity to pick up some plastic-free cutting boards, kitchen utensils and stainless steel cookware (Joy is testing these items at the moment so watch this space on how they perform).
• Organic Weave is offering code BLACKFRIDAY2025 to save 20% on their all-organic collection of rugs from November 24th to December 2nd.
• Birch Living (US based) is offering 25% off sitewide with code BF25 until 30 November and again, 25% off for cyber Monday with code CYBERSALE20 from Dec 1st to December 7th. • TerraCycle is offering 30% off their Zero Waste Box™ (no code needed) until 3 December. This is a great chance to tackle all those hard-to-recycle odds and ends. If you haven’t heard of TerraCycle before, they’re specialists in recycling the items most municipal programs won’t touch. Let’s address the (white) elephant in the room. Black Friday is not just the biggest day for saving money; It’s also the biggest day for unnecessary purchases and overconsumption. And what happens if a new gadget comes scratched? It likely gets returned where it ends up in landfills, contributing to an additional 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. The negative impact is even more apparent for apparel, with the fashion industry being one of the most carbon intensive industries.

You’ll want to forgo any fast fashion pieces (AKA please don’t buy from Shein and the like) or useless gadgets and gizmos in favor of timeless, long-lasting, and eco-friendly products.
3. Giving Tuesday: While you can give back any day of the week, Giving Tuesday falls on December 2nd. This annual celebration of generosity encourages you to give back with whatever you can (food, money, second-hand objects, or time). If you purchased new cookware on Black Friday, donate your previous pots and pans to someone in need. Or, contribute some of your time to your local community. Unfortunately, we don’t have a single, succinct definition of an “ethical or non-toxic Black Friday deal” for you, but we do have a set of rigorous environmental and social responsibility standards we’ve developed that we assess brands by to ensure materials are safe and sustainable, production methods are fair and transparent, and products are made to last.

At Sustainable Jungle, we know that marketing claims can be misleading, so we look for proof over promises. So when possible, we prioritize brands we’ve rated in our own brand rating system or personally tested for quality, function, and durability. Here are a few key things we looked for when selecting the best ethical Black Friday deals:
