8000Kicks is a pioneering footwear brand creating highly-reviewed hemp-based bags and accessories. They measure the CO2 emissions of each pair of their shoes and seek to minimize their environmental impact, in part, by using industrial hemp and algae as key materials.

Prioritizing ethical labor practices, the brand ensures living wages and safe working conditions for direct suppliers, and publishes details regarding manufacturing partners on its website. Awarded our highest rating of “Disrupting”, 8000Kicks is at the time of writing, our top rated brand in the footwear category.

About 8000Kicks

Co-founded in 2019 by a grandson-grandmother duo, 8000Kicks is an independent footwear and accessories brand located in Portugal. Social entrepreneur Bernardo Carreira came up with the idea of creating a hemp shoe after a late-night conversation with friends. With the help of his grandmother, a textile expert, he spent over a year developing the brand’s first model. The name 8000Kicks honors the use of hemp, a material with a history dating back to 8000 BC, and was chosen by the brand for its sustainability, strength, and durability. They opened their flagship store in Lisbon in 2024.

Rating Summary

Nature & Animals

All 8000Kicks’ products are made of at least 55% hemp. The shoe uppers blend hemp with organic cotton, recycled polyester, and virgin synthetics (nylon and spandex), where necessary for durability and performance. Soles are made from Bloom Foam algae—helping remove harmful algal blooms from waterways—along with natural rubber, recycled rubber, or recycled plastic. 8000Kicks is a PETA-certified 100% vegan brand. All partners are OEKO-TEX-certified for responsible chemical use, and factories are equipped with water treatment sewage systems. Packaging is made from recycled cardboard, and orders ship in compostable cornstarch mailers. 8000Kicks is testing a new repair program and has so far repaired over 100 products. They actively measure the carbon footprint of their shoes, with the Explorer model emitting 4.1kg of CO2 per pair—significantly lower than the industry average of 14kg. They also collaborate with factory partners to increase renewable energy use, carry out carbon offsetting, and ship using sea freight. However they have not set any carbon reduction targets and there are no specific targets or tracking in place for waste reduction, impact on biodiversity, water use, and energy efficiency.

Communities & Wellbeing

All 8000Kicks’ direct employees receive a basic salary, supplemental pay, and stock options in the company. The brand has a publicly disclosed code of conduct and maintains direct, close relationships with its suppliers. It discloses wages and employee benefits for manufacturing partners in China and Portugal, who pay above living wages. Additional insights are shared on social media. They personally audit performance and require OEKO-TEX certification. Not all indirect suppliers (e.g., eyelet manufacturers) are fully traceable, and supply chain traceability currently stands at 60%. Sourcing services from their small factory in Portugal helps support local businesses, but according to the brand, while it would be their preference there are no viable small hemp producers available for material sourcing. Three out of five of the brand’s direct employees are women and Bernardo’s grandmother is part of their leadership team. They demonstrate inclusive marketing, but no official DE&I policy is in place. Products are OEKO-TEX certified for chemical safety, and an adequate privacy policy is in place.

Score for Communities & Wellbeing: 67%. Learn more about our scoring here.

Values & Governance

8000Kicks is a small business with just five employees. While there is no official standardized annual impact reporting, the brand regularly updates its website and social media with sustainability progress and insights into its business practices. There is no record of greenwashing, false claims, or harmful marketing practices. 8000Kicks demonstrates meaningful community giving through product donations to those in need and disaster victims.

Explorer V2 Sneakers

I've been testing the Explorer V2 Sneakers for quite sometime in green. I love the comfortable, anti-microbial hemp insoles and water-repellent upper fabric that keeps my feet feeling dry and smelling (mostly) fresh, even after all day wear—which I can do, largely thanks to how incredibly lightweight and supportive they are.

Everyday Backpack

Lyall originally used the Everyday backpack for beach trips, finding the volume super handy for all the bits and pieces we need. But I gave it a new role once we had a child - which was to be a day care bag. Because we did cloth diapers, we had to send in 4 cloth diapers to day care with our son every day and this bag was perfect for this job. All the extra pockets and spaces were extra helpful for the multitudes of socks and bits and pieces needed for a child. Now that we're out of diapers, I have given it a wash and look forward to using it for day trips with our boy - the water proofing will no doubt come in handy.

  • Backpacks are praised for their durability, weatherproofing, and eco-friendly materials. Customers also appreciate the expandable capacity and stylish design.
