About The Kind Pet

When brand founders Laura and Jennifer met in 2015, Jennifer was seeking a marketing expert for The Eczema Company, her online business at the time. Through the growth of that brand, Jennifer had become especially curious about sustainable living and a holistic lifestyle, since both approaches were helping to cure her son’s eczema. Soon thereafter, Laura became keen on non-toxic living, too. As mutual pet lovers, The Kind Pet was born.

The Kind Pet both manufactures pet toys for its own Boba & Vespa in-house brand and provides an e-commerce platform for additional pet products from outside brands they respect and love.

Rating Summary

Nature & Animals

The Boba & Vespa range uses organic cotton (including certified organic cotton filler sourced from Texas), hemp, buckwheat hulls, organic catnip, and organic cotton thread. Because low water usage is inherent to organic materials, there is likely minimal use; however, no tracking or disclosures are available. The Boba & Vespa range is fundamentally chemical-free given the lack of dyeing or chemical-free inputs. For shipping, The Kind Pet uses kraft paper filling, boxes made with 80%+ recycled content as well as paper based padded mailers. No product packaging is used except for 100% post-consumer recycled paper hang tags and twine. To minimize waste and pollution, smaller production runs are made with an extremely select product range. Their factory reuses and recycles fabric scraps but further tracking of waste in production is not available. Products from Boba & Vespa are compostable and end-of-life guidance is provided on every Boba & Vespa product page. Offset emissions are made through Corso and the provision of lower carbon products lowers overall emissions, however, these have not been formally calculated. Their brand offices use high-efficiency heating and cooling and use of LED lights are in place. All items are vegan.

Communities & Wellbeing

The Kind Pet has actively supported underserved groups—by sourcing from female-owned or BIPOC-owned brands, for example. All products are created with pet safety in mind given the non-toxic GOTS-certified organic cotton and other low-impact materials like hemp. The brand has no direct employees and is managed only by the two female owners. They have reasonable privacy and digital protections in place on their website and through the e-commerce platform Shopify. Production for the Boba & Vespa range is done with Clothier Design Source, a small, USA-based, female-owned WBENC certified supplier, though it is unclear how this supplier offers worker protections for their production and greater supply chain. The Kind Pet has recently published a high level public code of conduct.

Score for Communities & Wellbeing: 58%. Learn more about our scoring here.

Values & Governance

The Kind Pet is a small business with 2 individual owners and no history of greenwashing or misleading marketing. A clear description of sustainability initiatives and values is offered on the website and each product from the Boba & Vespa line outlines sustainability credentials. No formal and regular reporting is present. The Kind Pet donates 1% of all sales to Reproductive Freedom For All and 0.5% of all sales to The Best Friends Animal Society. The Kind Pet is now also contracted with rePurpose Global to contribute to 8,000 lbs of plastic removal from oceans via their rePurpose Plastic Recovery Pledge program.

Score for Values & Governance: 67%. Learn more about our scoring here.

Reviews & Testing From Our Team

Image by Sustainable Jungle The Kind Pet Hemp Dog Bone Brand Review & Rating
The Hemp Dog Bone

The Hemp Dog Bone, which I got the chance to demo, was a perfect toy for omy aging Shepherd who still likes to chew, though her teeth require a softer option. Made of durable hemp canvas, organic cotton filling, thread, and label, I appreciate knowing that it can go right in my garden heap after this bone is well chewed (though for the time being, it’s holding up to daily chomps!).
