California-based PlushBeds is known for its commitment to high quality and healthier sleep options and provides a range of handcrafted vegan and organic mattresses, bedding, and sleep accessories. The brand has a wide range of certifications that include GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, GOTS Certified Organic Wool, USDA Organic, GOLS Certified Organic Latex, Green America, Climate Neutral Certified, FSC Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, and many more. Natural and sustainably sourced latex foam is their mainstay for mattresses, which come with or without metal coils inside. Additionally, their mattresses carry a seal from eco-INSTITUT, GREENGUARD Gold, and OEKO-TEX certification (an achievement less than 1% of mattress brands have), upon being tested successfully against 61 chemicals typically found in memory foam mattresses. Beyond the brand’s high industry standards for health, safety, and quality, the mattresses also come highly rated by customers. PlushBeds also commits to giving back to their community through several charitable initiatives, including The PlushBeds Scholarship Program for undergrad students of Environmental Science. PlushBeds is currently awarded our Top Rating in the mattress category.

About PlushBeds

In 2008, PlushBeds arose from founder Michael Hughes’ passion for creating a more comfortable and healthy sleep experience after the pain of learning his father’s death was likely caused partially by exposure to numerous common household chemicals. Hughes was especially disturbed by the chemical flame retardants mattresses are often treated with that are readily absorbed by our bodies. Because restrictions on these chemicals in the US are much more permissive than in Europe, Hughes was determined to create safe, comfortable, and plush beds. Today, PlushBeds has expanded beyond mattresses to also include a high-end and healthier assortment of bedding, pillows, mattress toppers, and more. In the words of Hughes himself, “In the end, it’s not our advocacy, or even our materials that define us. It’s our drive to make your bedroom the safest, most comfortable place to recuperate from the daily challenges life provides.”

Nature & Animals

PlushBeds’ mattress and bedding products feature almost entirely certified sustainable materials that include USDA and GOTS-certified organic cotton, GOTS-certified organic wool, FSC-certified TENCEL™ lyocell, brushed long-stable organic cotton, GOLS organic and Rainforest Alliance certified latex, and bamboo, which the brand says is processed in a closed loop system. The metal, wood, and brushed microfiber used in some products do not have any certifications or sustainability related information available. Several of the brand’s certifications include water management measures, like GOTS, GOLS, and ECO Institut, although the brand doesn’t disclose information on water use or impact in manufacturing. PlushBeds has FSC and Rainforest Alliance certifications for their orthopedic foundations. Products hold numerous chemical safety certifications like Greenguard Gold Certification, OEKO-TEX, GOTS, and GOLS. PlushBeds maintains that they use advanced monitoring systems and collaborate with industry initiatives aimed to reduce chemical risk, but no published tracking, targets, or specific reduction plans are in place. Packaging is mostly cardboard boxes, and poly mailers are also used for some products. The brand has strong waste and pollution measures in place, utilizing internal systems to monitor material flow to identify where waste is generated by category and they regularly audit to improve. PlushBeds also works with third-party recyclers like the Mattress Recycling Council to ensure responsible disposal and receive detailed waste reports. To meet regulatory requirements, the brand submits compliance reports that document the types and amounts of waste generated and how it’s treated. PlushBeds provides an in-home setup service including removal and recycling of old mattresses and box springs, available in select areas for a fee. While their ECO Institut certification and collaboration with TerraPass cover some emissions tracking, there is no broad emissions tracking available. PlushBeds’ Green Business certification requires various energy efficiency standards including use of Energy Star rated appliances, LED Lighting, and climate control. Further, their GOTS certification for some products/materials includes some energy tracking and efficiency requirements. Their GOTS certification for wool includes animal welfare criteria. Information around their mulberry silk sourcing is not disclosed. The brand hase a cruelty-free policy in place.

Communities & Wellbeing

PlushBeds’ directly-employed staff are provided extensive policies to ensure living wages are provided, along with numerous additional benefits and support provided beyond legal minimum, which include 401(k) retirement plans, medical insurance, PTO, sick pay, paid holidays, employee appreciation days, regular team-building events, and other various benefits like wellness initiatives, training opportunities, and performance incentives. Products are made in certified organic factories in California, with GOLS and GOTS certifications that include social and fair labor criteria to prevent forced labor and uphold human rights standards. Latex is sourced from Sri Lanka and wool is sourced from the UK, and PlushBeds says they maintain close supplier relationships to monitor ethical standards. They have a reasonable privacy policy in place, and sleep products are formulated with consumer safety in mind (the main mission of the company), with many products bearing a third-party safety certification based on testing that they lack harmful substances. All mattresses are GreenGuard Gold certified, GOLS certified, eco-INSTITUT Certified free from “formaldehyde, VOCS (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and many other potentially harmful chemicals”, and Control Union certified. Other non-latex bedding products bear GOTS certification. These certifications are published on their website. PlushBeds also has top ratings from both TrustPilot and the Better Business Bureau.

Values & Governance

PlushBeds currently has over 100 full-time employees. The company makes public statements on sustainability initiatives and actions on their website but does not currently publish formal annual sustainability or impact reports. There is no history of greenwashing or misleading marketing claims. The PlushBeds Scholarship Program is a charitable initiative that the company offers to those pursuing environmental degrees, as well as supporting locals who survived Ebola in Sierra Leone, along with giving to numerous other foundations like The Ed Asner Family Center and Every Kid Counts. Reviews & Testing From Our Team

Image by Sustainable Jungle - PlushBed Reviews - Luxury Bliss® Mattress
Luxury Bliss® Mattress

I’ve been sleeping on the Luxury Bliss Hybrid mattress for nearly two years now, and it’s still just as comfortable and supportive as when I first got it. I prefer a medium-firm feel, and this mattress has consistently hit that sweet spot—plush enough to feel cozy, but firm enough to keep my spine and hips aligned. I often have hip pain from soft mattresses but I’ve never woken up with it since sleeping on this one. Even after daily use—including lots of sitting in my bed working since I live in a tiny house with no office space—there’s been no sagging, soft spots, or noticeable loss of firmness. We rotate it head-to-foot every six months or so, as this is always a good practice to maintain mattress structure and ensure the same spots are not continually getting wear. Overall, it’s held up impressively well and continues to give me a great night’s sleep.

Goose Down Pillow

This Goose Down Pillow, in the “firm” density option, is hands down the best pillow I’ve ever used—especially as a side sleeper prone to neck pain. It strikes that rare balance between plush comfort and reliable support. It’s soft and cloud-like where you want it to be, but firm enough to keep your neck and spine properly aligned throughout the night. Before this pillow, I regularly woke up with a sore neck and the occasional pinched occipital nerve that would lead to me struggling with a tension headache for the rest of the day—now, that’s no longer an issue. And what’s even more impressive: after nearly two years of nightly use, it’s still holding its loft perfectly. No flattening, no lumpiness, no loss in comfort or support. It feels just as good now as it did the first week I used it.
