Rating Summary

Nature & Animals

Avocado replaces petroleum-based foams with natural, biodegradable materials such as GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton, and GOTS-certified organic wool. Mattress coils are made from steel, and bedding and furniture use organic hemp, organic linen, organic cotton, alpaca wool, and FSC-certified wood. Certifications include OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Greenguard Gold, MADE SAFE®, eco-INSTITUT®, EWG Verified®, and PETA Approved.

The brand’s use of organic materials makes production less water-intensive than conventional methods. Its latex facilities in Guatemala and India use water reclamation ponds to repurpose washing water into biomass-generated steam for latex baking. No formal water tracking or reduction targets are in place.

Avocado sources latex and hardwood from FSC-certified plantations, harvesting latex without harming the trees. The brand avoids materials from ancient or endangered forests and works with Canopy and suppliers to protect key ecosystems. Carbon offsetting through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation further supports forest conservation.

Chemical impact is minimized through nearly exclusive use of organic materials and safety-related certifications. While some chemicals are required for latex stabilization and processing, all are USDA National Organic Program-approved. The brand publishes PFAS test results, and its latex mattresses meet strict safety standards, including OEKO-TEX®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified®, and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified.

To reduce plastic used for packaging and shipping, Avocado wraps its rolled mattresses in recycled kraft paper and uses recycled poly bags, FSC-certified boxes, biodegradable garment bags, and excess latex foam. It was the first bedding company with Landfill Waste Diversion validated by UL, currently achieving an 89% diversion rate and aiming for 90%. In 2024, 99% of returned mattresses were donated. The brand offers a Zero Waste Collection of furniture made from upcycled wood, and prioritizes suppliers who track waste and use more sustainable packaging.

Avocado has been certified by The Change Climate Project since 2019, with offsetting efforts supporting the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. The brand has measured its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and has set reduction targets with the Change Climate Project-aligned action plans aimed at cutting emissions over the next 12–24 months.

Avocado’s wool is ethically harvested, GOTS-certified, and RWS-certified. A small number of products contain organic alpaca wool, mohair, and silk. The alpaca wool is ethically sourced with annual Peruvian farm visits. Mohair and silk are used sparingly but have no formal welfare policy covering their use. The brand also offers PETA-certified vegan mattresses and bedding.

Values & Governance

Avocado Green Mattress is a privately held company under Avocado Green Brands™, with between 501 and 1,000 employees.

The brand publishes annual Impact Reports that disclose specific metrics, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions and sustainability goals. Avocado is also integrating blockchain technology to allow customers and certifying bodies to verify product claims and supply chain information through scannable QR codes.
