As low-impact wardrobe warriors (or something like that), we’re always looking to fill our closets with do-good garments for every eco-ccasion, bedtime included. For this, we’re talking sustainable pajamas for sweet, environmentally, and socially conscious slumber.

While some prefer to sleep in their ethical underwear and a well-worn tee, sometimes you just need a good old-fashioned pair of PJs to spend the night in (or day—no judgment).

But why does it matter what you wear to bed? Traditional sleepwear fabrics like non-organic cotton, virgin polyester, and conventional silk come with serious costs, from pesticide pollution and microplastic shedding to the unethical treatment of workers and animals. Choosing eco-friendly and ethical sleepwear helps protect you, people in the supply chain, and the natural environment by reducing toxins, waste, and exploitation.

When we developed this list, we focused on pajama brands that use certified organic or recycled materials, prioritize fair labor and transparent production, and work to reduce carbon and water impact through thoughtful manufacturing. We also gave priority to brands rated by Sustainable Jungle and those we have personally tested.

To learn more about why choosing more sustainable alternatives is important and how we developed this list, head to the end of this article for a detailed explanation.

Note: You may notice “Rated Brands” on the list below. These brands have opted in to be assessed using our Brand Rating System and its comprehensive 22-point system that ensures we’re sleeping in the most low-impact jammies possible. Find other rated brands in our brand directory.

We independently research all featured brands, and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. We explain this further in our Terms of Use.

MagicLinen’s eco-friendly sleepwear is pretty darn magical if you ask us—and you should, considering we’ve been crawling into our sustainable bedding (which this brand also makes) for some time now. Their minimalist pajama designs include sweatshirts, sweatpants, and long and short-sleeve sets. The men’s collection offers the same, minus the sweatshirt and sweatpants.

MagicLinen keeps pajamas sustainable and simple with 100% OEKO-TEX certified flax linen, or, in the case of their robes, a linen-cotton blend. They use stone washing to soften the linen without chemicals.

Using European flax, everything is made by their own seamstresses in a small studio in Vilnius, Lithuania. Because everything is produced locally, their emissions are kept relatively low, and they have full control over production waste. Fabric scraps get recycled or upcycled into new products, and their small-batch method keeps garment excess almost nonexistent.

Products are shipped in home compostable cornstarch bio bags and even the garment tags are made of compostable linen.

My Personal Review of MagicLinen’s Linen Pajama Set LUNI & Women’s Waffle Robe:

“I love this set for summer sleeping and found that it gets softer over time. Because I need ANOTHER reason not to want to get out of my PJs! As soon as it gets chilly, I reach for my ultra-cozy Waffle Robe, which keeps me toasty and warm, just like a big warm hug.”

If you’re looking for sexy pajamas for women, Maylyn & Co. bridges the gap between lingerie and more practical sustainable luxury pajamas with their vegan silk chemise collection.

Maylyn & Co.’s ethical silk pajamas swap silkworms for vegan and cruelty-free silk made of a unique blend of lotus fibers and recycled polyester. This Persian Lotus Silk™ is designed to maintain a comfortable body temperature, though we don’t have any further information on how it’s produced, or any wider potential impacts.

They manufacturer in small batches in Persia at a ILO compliant factory that is subject to their regular visits and check-ins. All employees have flex working hours, fair pay, and other benefits. Their products are finished and packed using eco-packaging and vegan glues in their family-owned studio north of Toronto.

Maylyn & Co has been rated by Sustainable Jungle. See the full rating.

My Personal Review of Maylyn & Co.’s Blueporium Slip:

“In Maylyn & Co’s words, “It all began with skin sensitivity to synthetic materials used in clothes. The feeling of being stuck in the fabric.” Been there! That’s why I fell in love (and into bed) quickly with the Blueporium Sleepwear chemise I got to try. I’m normally a casual lingerie wearer, so I really appreciate how it’s sexy and flirty while still providing all the essential comfort and coverage. Plus, this vegan silk feels delightful on the skin. It’s just like real silk—but without the ethical implications (silk) worming their way into my conscience.”

Colorado’s Pact is simple to the stitch. The sustainable basics brand sells a wide range of clothing for men and women. Their affordable sustainable pajamas include waffle Henleys, sleep shorts, pants, flannel pajama sets and robes, and cool-stretch tanks.

Their ethical pajamas are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, sourced from India, where they also manufacture their range in Fair Trade factories that prohibit sweatshop conditions and child labor.

My Personal Testing of Pact Pajamas:

“I tested one of Pact’s pajama tops (a lengthy buttoned sleep shirt) and a pair of sleep pants. I have been wearing these items for a few years now and find them still very soft and comfortable. They’ve held up well to being washed (even with cloth diapers which was pretty hard on them). I will say the pants were very long for my 5″2 frame (something I’ve observed with all the pants I’ve tried from Pact).

Coyuchi

Coyuchi has not been rated.

Price Range: ~$80–$200

Coyuchi is a Californian brand specializing in sleep essentials: bedding, robes, and women’s and men’s sustainable sleepwear. They offer chemises, joggers, shorts, and the essential loose-fit robes and cardigans to throw on for chilly mornings. We love the range of colors in their ethical winter pajamas, like the earthy hues reminiscent of a coyote’s coat (hence the name Coyuchi) and their ocean-inspired blues.

They use MADE SAFE certified, 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, ensuring fully compostable, non-toxic pajamas. Coyuchi’s Textile Exchange membership and Fair Trade premium certification mean they abide by regular Fair Trade standards and provide additional funding to a worker-managed Community Development Fund. They source cotton through India’s ethically renowned Chetna Organic Farming Cooperative, which is woven in Turkey or India and manufactured at a factory in Portugal.

Coyuchi chooses partners who employ water recycling methods (their Portuguese factory recycles 98% of water). They sell “climate-beneficial products” grown using regenerative agriculture and use FSC-certified recycled cardboard and organic cotton bags for packaging.

Giving “sleep cycle” a new meaning, they embrace circularity through their 2nd Home™ Renewed program. Returned items are sent to The Renewal Workshop for either resale, recycling, or composting.

My Personal Review of Coyuchi’s Isla Organic Cotton PJ Set:

“I’ve been loving my new Coyuchi Isla Organic Cotton PJ Set. The long-sleeved pant set feels light yet surprisingly warm, which was a pleasant surprise since I usually only wear long sleeves in the winter. I was a bit skeptical about the lighter weight of the organic cotton weave, but I’ve been sleeping cozy and warm, even on the coldest winter nights. If I need extra warmth, their Adriatic Robe is a cozy way to layer up in any season, and I adore how soft the textured fabric is. It’s sort of waffle-knit but less prone to snagging than other waffle fabrics I’ve tried.”

Hernest Project

Hernest Project has not been rated.

Price Range: ~$70–$100

Hernest Project’s ethical women’s pajama sets feature clean lines and classic styles “made with movement in mind”. They call it “comfortable and effortless” and we can say in (h)ernest that we agree.

You’ll find materials like 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton brushed fleece, TENCEL™, recycled cotton, recycled lyocell, recycled linen, and recycled elastane (<2% in any garment). All fabrics are either bluesign® approved or OEKO-TEX certified. Hernest Project is 100% vegan and their suppliers do not use animal products in dyes or machinery.

All their sustainable PJs are made in Portugal’s SM Senra, which offers employees not only a living wage, but a food subsidy, bonuses, and more. We’re pretty impressed by their dreamy transparency, including the number of employees at each location and relevant certifications. Their cotton, for instance, comes from Tanzania, where farmers are “guaranteed a premium price”.

Beyond the ethically made pajamas, they use organic cotton tags, FSC-certified paper cards, and certified home compostable garment protectors and mailers from Better Packaging Co. Their 2030 Roadmap based on SDGs has them aiming to be carbon-neutral across scope 2 and 3 emissions by 2030. For unavoidable emissions, they purchase carbon offsets.

My Personal Review of Hernest Project’s Ada RESET Button-Down Sleep and Lounge Top:

“I tested the Ada RESET button-down top, and it was love at first snooze. Its boxy fit is both flattering and flowy (without getting wrapped around me in the middle of the night). Not only that, but the fabric is uber soft and a little bit heavier than most PJs, which gives it a bit more durability. Over a year of use, and the fabric is pilling very slightly but is otherwise in excellent condition still.”

MATE The Label

MATE The Label has not been rated.

Price Range: ~$250–$285 (priced for individual adult items, kids joggers and tops are priced from $87–$105)

MATE the Label’s nighttime/Netflix-binge-ready organic cotton collection earns them an invite to our slumber party! Their “Cozy Counter” range for women, men, and kids includes items you can use to sleep or lounge in including waffle sweaters, joggers, cozy cardigans and Henley tops. Great for family sets of sustainable PJs.

Most of their products are made with GOTS-certified organic cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell, and low-impact dyes. MATE sources their organic cotton from India and puts these fair trade pajamas together in a Los Angeles factory. Being US-based, workers benefit from California’s strict labor laws and receive fair wages. Their factory is a short drive away from HQ, so their carbon footprint is relatively small.

My Personal Review of MATE the Label’s Organic Waffle Relaxed Jogger:

“I’m a big fan of all things waffle knit, so I was super excited to try these, and I can honestly say that they’re officially my favorite sweatpants. The organic cotton is gorgeously cozy and soft. They run a bit on the larger side, which makes them perfect for lounging—they’re the kind of pants that make you want to cancel plans and just stay in and get cozy!”

The Ethical Silk Company

The Ethical Silk Company has not been rated.

Price Range: $180–$360

The Ethical Silk Company is a luxury sustainable sleepwear brand that creates all-natural, breathable sustainable silk pajamas, pillowcases, and loungewear, with cruelty-free practices that span from silk extraction to their fair trade tailor in Jaipur, India.

Their luxury sleepwear collection uses ethically harvested mulberry silk, also known as peace silk or ahimsa silk (watch their video to learn more).

These are some of the best eco-friendly pyjamas that are based in the UK. They’re designed in Ireland, then made by hand in their fair trade pajama tailoring unit Mehera Shaw in Jaipur, India. They use limited production runs to minimize textile waste, and low impact, AZO free dyes in all products and recycled packaging.

All water used is treated and recycled via a water filtration system that removes the dye residue, meaning the wash water can be recycled and reused for fabric washing. This is combined with a rainwater catchment system at the printing unit to reduce water use.

Leena & Lu

Leena & Lu has not been rated.

Price Range: $68–$108 (priced for individual items)

Leena & Lu ensures their luxuriously soft organic Peruvian pajamas, loungewear, cardigans, and robes are better for the wearer and the earth. Lena & Lu source 100% Fair Trade Certified and GOTS Pima cotton for their eco-friendly pajama sets, loungewear, robes, and cardigans. Their materials are dyed with natural dyes made of natural carmine, tara, onion peels, and avocado seeds.

Their 100% chemical-free organic cotton is grown, handpicked, and sustainably harvested in Peru. All pajamas are made in small batches, for which Leena & Lu pays fair living wages to makers.

Printfresh

Printfresh has not been rated.

Price Range: ~$150–$170 (for sets)

Printfresh is a whimsically wonderful brand for sustainable cotton pajamas in a wide range of fun and bold patterns. Matching sets can also be mixed and matched to suit your PJ preference.

They join a select cohort of organic cotton pajama brands and some of their pajamas are made from what they call “eco satin” which is viscose sourced from forests following the principles of sustainable forestry management. Given viscose typically needs a chemical process to convert the wood pulp into fabric and Printfresh does not clarify whether this is done in a closed loop process, we’d personally suggest sticking to the organic cotton options.

Their lovely prints via hand screen printing and embroidering by artisans in India and Sedex routinely evaluates their factory partner’s facilities. According to Printfresh, their sewing factory partner is one of the most environmentally responsible and light-filled factories they’ve seen. They’re solar-powered and recycle wastewater on site. Their printing facility also recycles waste water through a private pipeline, processing and returning it to the facility for reuse.

Why Choose Sustainable & Ethical Pajamas

Conventional fabrics like non-organic cotton and virgin polyester contribute to pesticide pollution, water waste, and microplastic contamination, while non-ethical silk production often involves silkworms being boiled alive. Many synthetic fabrics can also release toxins that harm both skin and waterways.

Behind the seams, millions of garment workers face unsafe conditions and poverty wages. Supporting brands that disclose their factories, carry Fair Trade or WRAP certifications, and provide living wages helps change this cycle of exploitation.

Additionally, the fashion industry contributes significantly to climate change, biodiversity loss, and habitat destruction.

We believe that buying fewer, better-quality pieces from sustainable brands who are taking action on all or many of these issues reduces the demand for fast fashion’s endless churn of overproduction.

If you’d like to read more about why sustainable choices matter, read Fashion Revolution’s latest report: What Fuels Fashion? 2025.

How We Found the Best Sustainable Pajama Brands

To build this list of sustainable pajama brands, we looked for those that combine comfort with ethics, and transparency. Here’s how we chose them (using our own sustainable fashion guidelines):

Materials

The softest and most sustainable sleepwear is made from eco-friendly fabrics like certified organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell, linen, and ethical silk (our least preferred given we prefer vegan fabrics but we know many people will be looking for ethical alternatives to silk pajamas). We’re cautious about bamboo or viscose because we’d only consider it sustainable if made from closed-loop processed fibers. Recycled polyester is obviously better than virgin polyester, but it would still be one of our least-preferred fabrics since it releases microplastics during washing (and even wear).

Supply Chain & Labor Practices

We favor brands that are transparent about where and how their products are made. That includes fair labor policies, safe working conditions, and supply chain traceability from raw fiber to finished pajama. Independent audits and third-party standards remain the best defense against greenwashing.

Carbon Commitments & Green Practices

Top brands minimize their footprint by using renewable energy, shipping by sea, reducing textile waste, recycling offcuts, and opting for compostable or plastic-free packaging. The best brands are carbon neutral and have clear targets in place to reduce their emissions. Many use offset programs to reduce their impact.

Rated & Personally Tested Brands

We prioritize including brands rated by Sustainable Jungle through our detailed sustainability assessment system, which evaluates 22 criteria across four pillars: Nature & Animals, Communities & Wellbeing, Business Values & Governance, and Product Performance.

We also highlight brands we’ve personally tested for quality, comfort, and durability.

Key Certifications To Look For

FAQ About Sustainable Pajamas

What are sustainable pajamas made from?

Sustainable pajamas are made from low-impact materials such as GOTS-certified organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell, hemp, linen, and ethically produced silk. These fabrics require less water and fewer chemicals to produce, making them safer for both people and the planet.

What about bamboo for pajamas?

Bamboo can be eco-friendly when it’s processed responsibly using a closed-loop system that recycles solvents and prevents chemical runoff. However, many “bamboo” fabrics on the market are actually rayon or viscose made with toxic chemicals, so always look for closed loop production, and OEKO-TEX or FSC certifications to ensure safer production.

Why should I choose ethical pajamas?

Ethical pajamas aim for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers’ rights across the supply chain. Choosing ethical brands helps combat exploitation and supports companies that prioritize transparency and social responsibility.

Are sustainable pajamas better for your skin?

Yes. Because they’re made from non-toxic, breathable, and natural fibers, sustainable pajamas are often gentler on sensitive skin and free from harmful finishes or synthetic dyes. Certifications like MADE SAFE and OEKO-TEX 100 confirm that the fabrics are free from known irritants.

Are sustainable pajamas more expensive?

They can cost more upfront, but they’re typically higher-quality and longer-lasting, meaning you replace them less often. Investing in sustainable sleepwear also helps reduce overconsumption and supports better practices in the fashion industry.

What’s the most sustainable pajama fabric?

Organic cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell are among the most sustainable options because they’re biodegradable, renewable, and produced with minimal environmental impact. Linen is another top choice, it’s naturally breathable and made from the hardy flax plant, which requires little water or pesticides.

How can I make my sleepwear routine more sustainable?

Buy fewer, higher-quality pieces, wash in cold water, air dry when possible, and repurpose or donate old sleepwear. Supporting certified brands and caring for your garments properly extends their lifespan and minimizes waste.

Final Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Pajama Brands

Feeling sleepy yet? Go ahead and rest easy on a non-toxic pillow knowing we did the work for you so that you can sleep soundly. But if you already have perfectly good PJs, don’t feel like you need to replace them just because they don’t have all the eco-credentials. The most sustainable pajamas are those you already own or secondhand options (see our guide to online thrift stores)—though we understand if you think PJs are a little too personal to buy pre-loved.

Keep in mind you don’t need that many pajamas, either. Not many people see you in them anyway, so stick to a minimalist mindset. Feel free to groggily share this guide to ethical pajamas with someone who has holey PJ bottoms.

Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the fast fashion bugs bite!

Editor’s Note: Originally published in May 2020 as a guide to ethical and fair trade pajamas, this article has since been expanded to include broader sustainability criteria such as materials, carbon impact, and circularity. It received a major update in October 2025 to reflect the latest rated brands, product testing, and sustainability developments.
