Pregnancy Safe Makeup: 6 Brands For You And Your Bundle
When you’re expecting, you start to consider everything—what foods you eat, what you drink, how much sleep you get, how close to the microwave you stand, 5G.
The list goes on…
It’s no wonder that us moms-to-be also consider pregnancy safe makeup.
While it’s important to consciously consume, that means more than just what we eat. Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs much of what you put on it. In fact, about 64% of what it comes in contact with—including chemicals.
And with things like fragrances, it’s up to 100%.
Which is why we’ve rounded up these safe makeup brands for use during pregnancy.
As an added bonus, these products support a healthier planet for your baby to grow up in, too.
If your due date is fast approaching, clicking here will (baby) bump you down to the bottom, where we elaborate more on our selection criteria, as well as the makeup ingredients that expecting moms should avoid.

1. 100% PURE
*Note: Not all products are vegan but there are many vegan options.
100% Pure’s Pregnancy Safe Makeup
Their 100% Pure makeup safe pregnancy guide makes it easy for expecting moms to look for makeup.
They’ve rounded up some of their own favorite pregnancy safe beauty products, which includes mascara, foundation, lipstick, eyeshadow, concealer, primer, BB cream, tints, and blush.
They’re all dyed with fruits, jam-packed with minerals and vitamins, and totally natural (and not the greenwashing kind either)—making everything safe for mom (and dad) and baby.
About 100% Pure
100% Pure is 100% committed to Fair Trade, cruelty-free makeup (and other beauty essentials like organic face wash).
Aside from ethically-sourced mica in their makeup, their non-toxic products are free from minerals. They do use palm oil and beeswax in some products, so double-check if you’re trying to avoid these ingredients.

You’ll receive your order in recycled packaging with compostable packing peanuts.

2. ELATE COSMETICS
*Note: Elate uses RSPO-certified palm oil.
Elate Cosmetics’ Pregnancy Safe Makeup
Elate Cosmetics wants to protect mothers and Mother Earth alike.
They’re doing so by making eco friendly makeup with 100% vegan, cruelty-free ingredients. Three-fourths of their product line is organic and/or fair trade, too.
Their range of pregnancy safe makeup covers all bases (eyes, face, and lips) and you can apply it using their vegan makeup brushes.
While they do use minerals like mica and titanium dioxide, theirs are ethically sourced and they only use non nano-sized particles.
You may also see stearic acid in their ingredient lists. This is a derivative of palm oil and, in Elate’s case, sourced from RSPO-certified suppliers.
Items come in sustainable glass bottles, compostable bamboo containers, or recyclable aluminum tins.
About Elate Cosmetics
Not only is Elate Beauty one of the best pregnancy safe makeup brands, but they’re an affordable organic makeup brand, too.
The Canadian company is conscious of five beauty principles: impact, ethics, community, future, and mission.
They want our makeup routines to have a positive impact, so they’re transparent about their ingredients and sourcing and offset their products with Bullfrog Power.

3. DAB HERB
Dab Herb’s Pregnancy Safe Makeup
Their line of makeup that’s safe during pregnancy is nearly natural enough to eat (though we personally wouldn’t test this!).
Check them out for eyes (eyeliner, mascara, organic eyeshadow), lips (gloss, tint, balm), and face (primer, contour powder, blush, cheek pinch, luminizer, concealer, moisturizer), as well as brushes and tools.
They use mostly food-grade ingredients that come from plant roots, leaves, petals, and seeds.
This makes everything vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, and in most cases, organic and fair trade.
To help keep those plants thriving, everything comes in conscious plastic-free containers.
About Dab Herb
‘Nature to Nurture’ is Dab Herb and founder Crissy’s driving force.
The brand was born out of the motivation to create a beauty alternative to the standard chemical-laden products.
Make(ing)up for nearly all of the ills in the industry, not only does Dab Herb source and sell products consciously, but they also support Made in A Free World to combat human trafficking.

Axiology’s Pregnancy Safe Makeup
Glowing skin and luscious lips?
That’s Axiology for you!
Their organic lipstick, balm, and “balmies” crayons (which can be used as both lipstick and eyeshadow) all qualify as safe makeup for pregnancy and our planet.
For pregnancy peace of mind, consider this: their products are made with 70% organic ingredients, including recognizable plant extracts, oils, and essential oils.
In fact, they all contain just 10 vegan and cruelty-free ingredients.
There’s no palm oil, fragrance, soy, or gluten. However, they do use a bit of iron oxide, Mica, and titanium dioxide.
Their mica supplier is a supporter of Made in a Free World.
Axiology started in a kitchen when their founder, Ericka Rodriguez, couldn’t find a single cruelty-free lipstick brand.
On the one hand, we’re thankful she didn’t because we love Axiology.
And so does PETA and all of the fair trade producers and animal welfare organizations they support through purchases or donations.
Even their packaging has been carefully considered, which is why they’re made out of upcycled trash by a woman’s collective in Bali.
5. ECO MINERALS
Eco Minerals’ Pregnancy Safe Makeup
What makes Eco Minerals’ makeup safe for pregnancy?
The fact that it’s free from chemical fillers, preservatives, talc, bismuth oxychloride, magnesium stearate, palm oil, and parabens.
What they do contain are non-nano, non-color coated minerals, like zinc oxide to calm skin, iron oxide for pigment, titanium dioxide for SPF 24 sun protection, and mica for a stunning shimmer.
There are just four key ingredients in their BB cream, primer, radiance oil, blush, bronzer, foundation, and concealer.
In their lipsticks, eyeshadow, and mineral mascara, you’ll also find nourishing ingredients like kaolin clay, shea butter, and plant seed extracts.
Refills are available for some of the products. Just send back the jar or get powder refills in a 100% biodegradable envelope. Over 80% of customers use these refills!
About Eco Minerals
Coming from beautiful Byron Bay in Australia, Eco Minerals is exactly that—safe pregnancy makeup that’s made from 100% pure, natural minerals.
The ingredients are ethically sourced and their products are handmade and shipped in eco-friendly containers.
Their entire range is vegan, palm oil-free, and cruelty-free, as certified by PETA, Palm Oil Investigations, and Choose Cruelty Free.
6. RMS BEAUTY
*Note: Some RMS Beauty products contain beeswax but there are vegan options.
RMS Beauty’s Pregnancy Safe Makeup
RMS Beauty’s pregnancy safe makeup is free of soy, silicone, GMOs, and parabens.
It’s also cruelty-free and only includes consciously chosen natural and non-toxic ingredients, including ethical mica.
They do use some ingredients (like carnauba wax) that are sustainably harvested from Brazilian palm leaves and Moriche palm trees, but these should be distinguished from the practices associated with other palm species in Southeast Asia.
RMS Beauty is not 100% vegan, and a few products contain a small amount of food-grade synthetic color. But the ingredient is very easy to avoid.
If you’d prefer to stick with raw, food-grade ingredients, you won’t miss out.
In fact, you’ll still have a healthy selection of nearly every makeup product you could need: natural lipsticks, oils, balms, mascara, eye polish, lip shine, cruelty free concealers, powders, bronzers, and blush—to name just a few.
They also have pregnancy safe makeup remover that’s infused with organic coconut oil and gentle enough for both expecting mothers and newborn babies.
About RMS Beauty
A ‘Clean at Sephora‘ brand, RMS Beauty is bringing better, safer makeup to more people.
They’re one of the few ‘mainstream’ safe makeup brands for pregnancy.
The brand was founded by Rose-Marie Swift (RMS, get it?), who’s been working in the beauty industry for 36 years. Suffice it to say that those years left her yearning for something better.
And so, she developed a brand with clean, transparent ingredients.
Clean for faces, clean for Earth. RMS beauty also opts for minimal, recyclable, or reusable packaging, like cardboard made using 100% wind power.
They’re also a proud donor to organizations like Sea Shepard, the Environmental Defense Fund, and Doors to Freedom, which works with victims of sex trafficking.

HOW WE FOUND THESE PREGNANCY SAFE MAKEUP BRANDS
Sustainable beauty is important for Mother Earth, but it’s equally important for expecting mothers who don’t want to expose their bundle of joy to unnecessary chemicals.
Here’s what we looked for to ensure that these makeup brands are safe for pregnancy, and support a better world for babies to grow up in.
- Non-toxic natural & organic ingredients
- Vegan (the brand should have some vegan options)
- Palm oil-free (or responsibly-harvested sustainable palm oil at a minimum)
- Ethical ingredient sourcing policies
- Thoughtful packaging – ideally zero or low waste (earning a ‘green’ box) or at a minimum recyclable (earning an ‘orange’ box’)
MAKEUP INGREDIENTS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY
So, is it safe to wear makeup during pregnancy?
Well, it depends.
Most conventional makeup brands use ingredients that many of us would avoid, bun in the oven or not.
According to Parents Magazine, these ingredients should be avoided during pregnancy (and after if you’re breastfeeding):
- Beta hydroxy acids: Used in anti-aging creams these will show on the ingredient labels as 3-hydroxypropionic acid, trethocanic acid, tropic acid, and salicylic acid
- Diethanolamine (DEA): Used as an emulsifier in creamy makeup products. Look for any ingredient with ‘DEA’ in it.
- Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): Used as a color additive in bronzer. Look for any ingredient with ‘DHA’ in it.
- Formaldehyde: Can be found in nail polish, blush, mascara, and lotion. Look for quaternium-15, hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, dimethyl-dimethyl (DMDM), imidazolidinyl urea, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate.
- Hydroquinone: Often found in lightening creams and brightening serums.
- Parabens: Propyl, butyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, and methyl.
- Retinol: Found in foundations and lipstick. Look for Vitamin A, retinoic acid, adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene, isotretinoin, retinyl palmitate, and retinaldehyde
- Toluene: Often found in nail polish.
- Fragrance: Should also be avoided as it may contain hormone disruptors or phthalates, which have been linked to reproductive defects. Similarly, parabens (used as a preservative) have also been associated with reproductive system issues and breast cancer.
While studies are limited, nanosized particles in minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide may be toxic due to their ability to pass through the skin barrier. For this reason, we’d recommend sticking with non-nano sized particles across all ingredients.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON PREGNANCY SAFE MAKEUP
Pregnancy may have you glowing but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little beautification.
Just remember: You’re eating for two, and you’re also wearing makeup for two.
Au natural is best for you and your baby (and easier to do during lockdowns and more time at home), but if you’re getting dressed up for that baby shower or possibly the last date night, consider these pregnancy safe makeup brands.
Not only will you be wearing ingredients that are safe for your growing belly, but they’re also better for our warming planet, too. And of course, let’s not forget better for breastfeeding when that little one arrives.
