It’s no secret that big brand beauty is good at concealing some less than sustainable practices: animal testing and cruelty, totally unnecessary animal-products, and all other manner of unethically obtained beauty ingredients.
It’s time we expose the ugly pimples underneath and turn toward more ethical, vegan concealer options to cover up those unwanted blemishes instead.
In this search for the best cruelty free concealer options, we tried to cover all our bases by looking for products that adhere to our sustainable beauty criteria. While we obviously want products that are vegan and cruelty-free, we also look for products that are organic / natural, palm oil free, have ethical ingredient sourcing policies and use thoughtful packaging. We’re not exactly focusing on zero waste here, but in general we try to prioritize brands with either zero waste or recycle packaging to minimize waste as much as possible.
While we don’t always get full coverage for these criteria, we try to get as flawless as possible.
QUICK LINKS FOR VEGAN & CRUELTY-FREE CONCEALERS
1. DIRTY HIPPIE COSMETICS MINERAL CREAM CONCEALER
About Dirty Hippie’s Concealer
It should come as no surprise that Dirty Hippie makes one of the best cruelty-free concealers we found. Not only is it vegan but a totally zero waste concealer, too.
This cream provides medium to full coverage designed to last all day. Unlike many vegan concealers, these are Titanium Dioxide-free and are instead comprised of almost entirely organic ingredients.
The light-reflective Sericite Mica brightens under eye circles while fractionated coconut and sweet almond oils make this concealer have an incredibly low comedogenic factor. This simply refers to the degree at which oils and other cosmetic products clog pores and cause pimples.
It even carries an SPF (sun protective factor) of 15 thanks to the non-nano zinc oxide (for more about zero waste sunscreens, including the specifics of nano zinc, check out our article here).
And since minimalist consumerism is more sustainable, this concealer doubles as foundation if used widely over the face.
It comes in three shades: moonlit (light), sun kissed (medium), and goddess (deep tanned). For those with complexions that fall somewhere in between, the shades are easily blendable to customize your color.
Choose between 2g sample sizes or 15g regular sizes, both packaged in reusable tin pots. For Aussies only, you can get this pot refilled; the air emissions for offering this recycling program overseas would be a bit counterproductive.
About Dirty Hippie
Dirty Hippie makes all kinds of hand-made, vegan make-up, hair, and skin products. Everything is cruelty-free, vegan, and almost 100% organic. Every single product is also completely zero waste, with compostable recycled cardboard tubes or reusable tin and glass pot packaging. Even the labels are printed with vegetable ink.
Zero waste products aside, the company itself is based in the zero waste community of Bywong, Australia. This inspires Dirty Hippie to use collected rainwater, grow many of their own ingredients (locally sourcing nor buying the others from Fair Trade channels) and operating from a totally solar powered HQ.
They currently function at a 50% carbon offset and donate to many different charities. These range and revolve from animal rescues to suicide prevention and more. Currently, a portion of your purchase will go The Stroke Foundation Australia.
The one current slight downside is that their supplier of Olive and Coconut oils (aka Cetearyl and Sorbitan olivate, respectively) no longer guarantees they are palm oil free. Dirty Hippie is moving to a different 100% Palm Oil Free supplier. In the meantime, it’s something to be aware of.
2. DAB HERB MAKEUP ORGANIC PETAL CONCEALER
About Dab Herb’s Concealer
Dab Herb makes vegan concealer from plant pigments and pedal and herb oils. Almost every ingredient is certified organic, unrefined, and food grade. No titanium dioxide, mica (a mineral silicate used to provide better coverage but can also be inflammatory… and doesn’t exactly have the best human rights backstory), wax, or stearic acid, and only a “tiny bit” of iron oxide for pigmentation.
Being highly non-comedogenic, it’s designed for all manner of blemishes, acne aside, including large pores, veins, scars, sun spots, and under eye circles. It not only hides the short term, but heals overall skin condition in the long term thanks to the antioxidant rich ingredients.
Non-nano zinc oxide even adds a slight SPF quality and tea tree oil gives it antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties.
One of the best cruelty-free concealers on our list!
Standard sizes come in a 4.2 ml glass pot with an aluminum lid, which Dab Herb accepts for refills, ideal for those living a zero waste lifestyle. If you’re unsure of your correct skin tone for your first order, you can get a small sample so ensure you get the best color for your complexion.

Using only organic plant-based oils (which they also sell individually), they craft vegan lip balm, cheek tint, brow fillers, bronzers and highlighters, and face oils all designed to nourish your skin.

About Rainwater Botanicals

They have three core philosophies: natural Ingredients, no animal testing and sustainability, focusing on local, organic and sustainable ingredients, sourced ethically.
They have recently removed all palm oil from their products and all their products are suitable for vegans (except their healing salve, which contains local beeswax).
They support North Beach Paws (a no kill animal shelter) and some local charities for kids.
They are focusing on creating an entirely zero waste range which will include paperboard, glass or metal packaging and they plan to offer refills in compostable bags, where possible.
They have switched to 100% recycled paper mailers for all small packages and use biodegradable vegetable starch peanuts.
For larger and heavier orders, they ship using recycled and recyclable/reusable boxes wherever possible. They also print their labels on recycled paper and their office recycles, re-uses and composts what they can.

Let’s face the facts: we all get pimples. There’s no shame in wanting to cover up those bumps and blemishes. But what we shouldn’t have to cover up is the ethical practices that go into making our makeup.
These vegan and cruelty concealers prove that you can get full coverage skin care in a transparent package. Clean skin doesn’t have to come at a cost to any animal or the planet.
