How We Found The Best Non-Toxic Makeup Brands
So, how did we make up our minds about the best clean makeup brands? Just like we did for organic eye creams.
We rustled through our sustainable makeup bags and chose brands that align with our sustainable beauty guidelines, of course.
We put natural makeup remover on brands that didn’t meet all (or most) of our criteria.
- Non-toxic ingredients: How do you know if makeup is non-toxic? By starting with the ingredients. Basically, we scanned the tab for these ingredients in skincare to avoid.
- Vegan & cruelty-free: Unfortunately, animal testing is the norm in the beauty industry. As you can imagine, the process of testing toxic chemicals on animals is pretty cruel. That’s why we look for clean and cruelty-free makeup brands, and those that are absent of any animal byproducts.
- Palm oil free: That means derivatives, too. Though, brands that found ways to do palm oil better with RSPO-certified suppliers are okay.
- Ethically sourced ingredients: Clean cosmetics made with dirty business practices are not truly clean. We love brands that create products with Fair trade principles.
- Thoughtful packaging: The best makeup brands use sustainable packaging (compostable, plastic-free, recyclable etc), but since this wasn’t the focus of this list of clean makeup brands, we also accepted recyclable plastic.
