1. Boll & Branch

Images by Boll & Branch

About Boll & Branch

Price Range: $179–$499

What is the world’s most comfortable blanket?

Given they’re a favorite of three living US presidents, we’d go out on a limb (er, branch) to say it’s one of Boll & Branch’s 100% organic, Fair Trade certified blankets.

Boll & Branch is a bona-fide sustainable bedding aficionado, with high quality, luxurious bed linens, organic comforters, pillows, and more.

Their range of GOTS-certified blankets come in cable, waffle, sweater, Aran, or herringbone patterns and knits, plus traceable and humane Alpaca natural wool blanket.

For the most versatile option, we suggest the Waffle Bed Blanket, whose breathable, textured organic cotton blanket weave makes it the perfect summer catnap cover or winter laying tool alike.

Boll & Branch’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Choose between 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton or natural wool blankets made of fair trade alpaca wool. Though matched in softness, alpaca wool is more sustainable than cashmere because of how much gentler alpacas are when grazing.

All items are OEKO-TEX-certified and free of toxic chemicals, including dyes.

Supply Chain & Labor Practices:

From farm to finish, you can trace every step of this brand’s commitment to organic.

Plus, all bedding is made in Fair Trade-certified factories in Turkey, India, Portugal, and the US—meaning you’ll find organic cotton blankets made in the USA.

Since 2014, the brand has paid nearly $1M in additional wages to factory workers and farmers to sustain fair wages and invest in their communities.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Boll & Brand keeps you toasty without toasting the planet. To reduce emissions, they use boat shipping instead of flight freight.

They also use recyclable/compostable and recycled packaging.

Community & charitable giving:

Via Helping From Home, they’ve donated nearly 8,000 new pillows and mattresses (and counting) to those in need.

In addition, 10% of annual profits go toward charities helping families like Habitat for Humanity.

Coyuchi’s natural blanket range guarantees the softest sanctuary, with organic hand-stitched quilts, light-knitted throws, organic baby blankets, organic cotton throws, and washable organic cotton and wool blend throws.

If your soft spot is luxuriously plush, take a piece of the Pismo Organic Blanket, which features a contemporary take on matelassé. It’s woven from organic cotton that’s stone-washed for a snuggly-soft texture.

Or refer to their handy blanket guide to find the perfect organic bed blanket.

Coyuchi’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Most are made of 100% GOTS and Fair Trade organic cotton from Portugal, Turkey, or India, and softened with plant-based softeners.

Some, like the Sequoia Washable Organic Cotton & Wool Throw, are made from 70% organic cotton with 30% Argentinian wool.

Supply Chain & Labor Practices:

Cotton is sourced in Portugal, India, or Turkey, and then woven in Portugal, Germany, or India.

Their Fair Trade-certified manufacturing partners ensure fair wages and employee empowerment opportunities.

Coyuchi also pays additionally towards worker-managed Community Development Funds.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Coyuchi champions circularity, and their 2nd Home Renewed circular initiative is both a green project and an equitable way to help everyone with luxury-grade, affordable home textiles.

In addition, their 2nd Home Take-Back program recycles old Coyuchi textiles that can’t be resold and makes them into new items.

The brand also supports regenerative agriculture, uses plastic-free responsible packaging, and recycles 98% of water used in their factories.

Community & charitable giving:

Through 1% for the Planet, the brand supports Fibershed and the White Buffalo Land Trust, who commit to climate-positive regenerative agriculture.

3. Saatva

About Saatva

Price Range: $178–$212

What began as mattress industry disruption has turned into stress relief icon-status, thanks to Saatva’s line of responsibly-made sleep essentials.

Maybe you already have a sustainable mattress and sustainable bed frame from them, but you’re still tossing and turning.

In that case, a natural weighted blanket is your bestie. Saatva’s Weighted Blanket features velvety 100% cotton and all-natural glass beads to help you decompress and doze off to la-la-land. It’s available in 12 or 20 pound weights.

We’re also personal owners (and fans!) of their Waffle Knit Blanket, a certified chemical-free, soft, and lightweight layer that provides year-round breathable comfort under the ever-satisfying waffle weave of its long staple cotton fibers.

Choose between three sizes for almost every organic blanket: King & Cal King, Queen & Full, or Twin & Twin XL.

Saatva’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Blankets are 100% cotton or cotton and viscose blend, while quilts are 100% organic cotton.

We suggest skipping the viscose blend, since it’s a semi-synthetic (NOT natural fiber) that begins as tree pulp and becomes a yarn through heavy processing.

All materials are fair trade, hypoallergenic, and bear OEKO-TEX certification.

Supply Chain & Labor Practices:

The brand’s natural throw blankets come from a Fair Trade Indian factory, but other bedding, like heir sustainable mattresses and comforters, are made in the USA.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

With almost 150 fulfillment centers, US-based deliveries travel less than 100 miles, reducing shipping impact.

The brand also provides a recycling service for their mattresses.

Community & charitable giving:

In Hindu philosophy, “sattva” means purity, wholesomeness, and virtue.

From their mattress donation program to employee volunteer events, a reforestation project in Kenya, and the countless US-based charities that they support, Saatva sure lives up to its name.

6. Bearaby

Images by Bearaby

About Bearaby

Price Range: $140–$370

If sleeptime anxieties are unbearable, Bearaby makes the journey from waking to dream life bearable with their range of sensory pillows and organic weighted blankets.

How does it work?

“The weight on your body stimulates the production of serotonin (the happy hormone), reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), and increases melatonin, which helps you fall (and stay) asleep.”

Blanket weights range from 6-35 pounds and should be 10% of your body weight for the best deep sleep results.

Envelop yourself in the chunky knit Cotton Napper and snooze soundly knowing that non-toxic OEKO-TEX and Fairtrade certified organic cotton is your personal Sandman as it lulls you to a peaceful sleep.

If you have a child who struggles with bedtime anxiety, the Nappling is a safe, weighted option just for kids.

Bearaby’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

The sustainable blanket brand’s organic cotton weighted blanket items are all 100% OCS-certified organic cotton.

They’re also OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, meaning only natural dyes and chemical-free processes are used.

They also have a Tree Napper made of 53% FSC-certified natural eucalyptus fiber TENCEL™ lyocell fabric and 48% organic cotton, which is extra cooling for hot sleepers.

Blankets have no actual weights and are only made with fabric. Bearaby’s patent-pending weighted yarn is the one material you’ll find in their chunky-knit blankets—almost 300 organic yards of it!

Supply Chain & Labor Practices:

Blankets are Fairtrade International certified, which means traceable supply chains adhere to strict requirements for farmers rights, workers rights, fair pay, no child labor, and good working conditions.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Bearaby’s production line is plastic-free, so zero plastic wrapping is used.

Instead, they package in 100% organic cotton blanket bags.

Community & charitable giving:

The brand regularly supports organizations like Ocean Conservancy, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Action Against Hunger, and more.

Bearaby also plants a tree through One Tree Planet for each purchased Tree Napper.

About Anchal

Price Range: $225–$384

Anchal is a nonprofit social enterprise with a unique approach to creating stylish home comfort.

The US-based, sister-owned brand supports Indian women exiting the sex trade by providing them with artisan maker opportunities.

The results are stunning—from eco-friendly aprons to organic scarves.

And their full blanketing homewares range of course includes some of the best organic throw blankets.

These boldly designed, beautifully hand-woven GOTS-certified blankets can fashionably adorn any chair, bed, couch, or body.

We especially love the Ascend Throw Quilt, whose hand quilted geometric color block ensign makes it as much a woven artwork as they are a functional sleep item.

Anchal’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Six delectable layers of 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and each quilt features a hand-stitched signature of its creator and non-toxic dye colors.

Some feature layers of recycled cotton from vintage saris.

Supply Chain & Labor Practices:

As a Fair Trade Verified nonprofit, Anchal designs everything around transparency and equitableness.

They provide former commercial sex trade workers with economically empowering, skilled artisan work, and give fair pay to support their whole family, plus health care and education for their children.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Anchal always prioritizes organic and recycled textiles, which are better for our health and the planet’s.

They also partner with the ethical alternative to Amazon, Made Trade, to ensure their 100% organic cotton blankets can be shipped via carbon-neutral shipping.

Community & charitable giving:

All profits are reinvested into Anchal’s two primary projects:

Stitch x Stitch, a holistic program in Ajmer, India employs 400-plus women to craft their products.

dyeScape, a Kentucky-based organization, provides education and training on plant-based fabric dyes.

We cover the latest in sustainable living, fashion, zero waste, beauty, travel, finance and more…

How We Found The Best Organic Blankets

You can plan a pretty picnic (blanket) but you can’t predict the yarn’s production impacts.

Under the covers of synthetic materials lurk pesticides, toxic dyes and softeners, and dangerous chemicals like PFCs, formaldehyde, and flame retardants, some of which are released while you’re in dreamland.

You read that right.

Unfortunately, many coverlets and blankets (especially those fuzzy fleece ones) are made from polyester, acrylic, and other petroleum-based plastic nasties.

Nothing like a loom of chemicals to put the “eep” in “sleep”!

So, what is an organic blanket?

We often wrap ourselves in blankets much like an organic robe, which is why we used our sustainable fashion criteria.

Materials:

What are organic blankets made of?

So we don’t throw away the planet, organic throws should be made straight-from-Mama-Earth, and preferably organic sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, ethical wool (that’s traceable and cruelty-free,) linen, or recycled cotton.

While those made of TENCEL™ Lyocell, which is made from sustainably harvested Eucalyptus trees, are sustainable and natural fiber blankets, they aren’t organic.

And what is a natural fiber blanket without natural dyes?

Naturally, we look for those, too.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Organic cotton waffle blankets provide warmth from head-to-toe, but transparent and fair supply chains warm our hearts.

We want brands supporting farmers and makers with fair pay, safe and supportive working conditions, and zero child labor or worker abuse to make us less guilty about rainy days spent making blanket forts instead of eco-friendly cleaning the house.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Our favorite non-toxic blankets have behind-the-snooze carbon reduction features like recyclable packaging materials, regenerative farming, carbon offset programs, water recycling, traditional hand making techniques, and product second life and recycling programs.

Community & charitable giving:

It’s an added comfort when an organic cotton blanket brand supports farming communities, factory employees, ecosystems, and our global community via money, skills, opportunities, or resources.

Final Thoughts On Organic Plush Blankets

Wear your heart on your sleeve, and wrap your body in an organic cotton blanket for a clean conscience and sweet dreams.

After all, we want the warmest organic throw blanket for ourselves—not one that will warm the planet the most.

By dollar-voting for any one of these brands, you’re also making a vote in favor of people, planet, and a naturally cushy night’s sleep.

So, have that anxious water cooler work associate who’s in desperate need of a stress-free snooze?

Do them (and us) a favor and spread the organic love by shooting this dreamy list their way.
