About MagicLinen

Price Range: $70–$130

Lithuanian-based MagicLinen has a range of stylish and functional natural linen aprons to go with just about every other linen home textile you could ever want.

From the idea to development to the final product, everything is done in-house.

And oh baby, do we love their Linen Bib Apron.

We own one and use it on the daily for both cooking and running our side-hustle upcycled crafting business. After getting countless glue stains on our clothes, an apron is absolutely essential to us now.

We appreciate that this one features both a tied beck and waist design, each with super long straps to get the perfect fit no matter what size you are.

It’s also lightweight so we can easily wear it comfortably even when crafting outside under the hot summer sun.

MagicLinen’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Every product produced by MagicLinen is made from 100% Lithuanian-grown flax linen, grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

All products are OEKO-TEX certified, meaning they are free from harmful substances and chemicals.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Behind every MagicLinen product is a team of 20 skilled seamstresses who are not overworked or exploited and enjoy a safe, aesthetically pleasing workspace where breaks and relaxation are priorities.

Their supply chain is 100% locally based in Lithuania.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Popular products—like their linen sheets—are pre-shipped from their Lithuanian workshop to the closest warehouse to further decrease the shipping carbon footprint.

Most of the textile leftovers are used to create smaller items such as tote bags and Christmas decorations.

Primary product packaging is made out of cornstarch and PBAT, a bio-based polymer, making it 100% compostable.

Inclusivity:

Inclusivity and equal opportunity is also an important part of MagicLinen, who often employ seamstresses with disabilities.

Community & charitable giving:

MagicLinen supports local communities and occasionally drives new social initiatives.

2. Caraway

About Caraway

Price Range: $55

Caraway’s mission is to design non-toxic products for the home, starting with stove top items.

Their non-stick and non-toxic cookware and bakeware has been part of our daily cooking routine for almost two years now.

So it’s only natural that we’ve added one of their two-pocket organic cooking aprons to the (baking) mix.

The tie is all one piece, connected to both the waist and neck, so we can easily widen the neck hole to fit over a larger head (i.e. my husband’s), then cinch it up nice and snug to fully cover the front.

This adjustability, coupled with its full coverage cut and thick and durable fabric makes this our favorite cooking apron, because it can handle even the messiest of recipes.

You can also purchase matching pot holders, oven mitts, and tea towels to complement your kitchen apron. If you buy them all in a set, you can save $60.

Caraway’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Caraway’s aprons and table linens all feature 100% organic cotton, in a thick and durable weave that can withstand a lot of wear and come into contact with hot metal pans.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Caraway carefully vetted vendors before deciding on factories in China, all of which adhere to their strict ethical manufacturing practices and maintain the required standards for BSCI or SMETA.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Products are shipped in recycled cardboard with zero plastic bags and low impact print dyes.

Manufacturing the ceramic coating used in all of their cookware, bakeware, and food storage creates 60% fewer CO2 emissions than traditional non-stick coatings.

How We Found The Best Sustainable Kitchen Aprons

Sustainable fashion is important—even if only considered for keeping your favorite fair trade sweater oil-splatter-free.

This is what we considered in cooking up this list of sustainable apron brands:

Materials:

Eco-friendly aprons must be made of sustainable fabrics, and those featured primarily included organic cotton, linen, and, to a lesser extent, upcycled apron fabrics.

Linen is widely considered the best material for aprons not only because of its quick-drying nature and homestead-chic earthy texture, but because even though lack of a certification scheme for the material means there are no certified organic linen aprons, linen requires little to no chemical inputs to grow.

Supply chain & labor practices:

There can never be too many conscious cooks, so it’s a relief to see that most of these brands detail where their aprons are made, by whom, and how they’re supported.

Still, greenwashing is as bad as green food dye on your new white blouse.

When supply chain practices are backed by third-party certifications, it’s additional assurance the ethical aprons are, in fact, ethical.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Between the best carbon offset programs, manufacturing practices that reduce waste, plastic-free packaging, partnerships to offset plastic use, and durable aprons designed to last, our dinner parties just got a lot greener.

Community & charitable giving:

Even though many of these brands are small-scale, we love seeing contributions to environmental and social organizations, as well as initiatives to support artisan communities.

Final Thoughts On Organic Aprons

If you’re cooking, cleaning, or crafting, having a layer between your clothes and that spitting oil is a sustainable move.

After all, the best fast fashion alternative is to simply use our clothes for as long as possible.

These natural aprons not only provide sustainable, spill support, but also keep phones, recipes, and cooking tools on hand.

But if you haven’t leveled up your cooking game with an apron yet, be sure to check out second hand stores first.

Now, please pass the salt… by which we mean pass this article on to all the cooks and bakers in your life so we can all make like bread and rise toward a more conscious kitchen.
