7 Organic Period Underwear & Panties For Non-Toxic Leak Protection

Molly Willows

Let’s get personal about organic period underwear.

There’s no question that sustainable period underwear and menstrual cups have revolutionized that “time of the month”.

They’ve taken Aunt Flo and made her way more eco-friendly by replacing the copious amount of plastic wrappers, applicators, and disposable pads (which, let’s be honest, feel like wearing a diaper).

But for all their benefits, they might be costing wearers a steep price.

Thinx is a case in point. The first and most well-known period underwear brand was involved in a class action lawsuit because of the PFOA chemical contaminants found in their underwear.

So here’s the big, bloated question: are period underwear non-toxic?

Not to alarm you, but as much as 65% of the market may very well not be.

Fortunately, there are a number of period underwear brands stepping up to the panty plate and providing the best organic (no chemicals) period panties that won’t cramp your health or style—and no, they can’t do anything about your actual menstrual cramps.

So what are the healthiest period underwear?

Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. Why Choose PFAS-Free Period Underwear?

We’ve got a lot to say on the topic, but we will try to keep it brief (pun intended.)

The problem with underwear made from conventional materials is that many of them are treated with a family of harsh chemicals called PFAS.

PFAS are man-made chemicals used in various products due to their effective water, oil, grease, and dirt repellent properties. The most common sources are cleaning products, water-resistant fabrics, nonstick cookware, and personal care products.

In recent years, they have earned the name “forever chemicals” due to the fact that they bioaccumulate in the environment (and stick around… you guessed it…forever.)

As these harmful chemicals bioaccumulate, humans become exposed to them by eating food raised in PFA contaminated soil and drinking PFA contaminated water.

They have been found in the environment and in the blood of humans and animals worldwide. Most people in the United States have one or more specific PFAS in their body.

PFAS have been linked to several human health problems, including asthma, cancer, endocrine disruption, increased cholesterol, and weight gain.

Recent studies in Australia and Singapore have shown they may be a cause of infertility, too, which is especially concerning given the topic at hand.

The growing health concerns surrounding PFAS are raising red flags, so much so that several countries and states are in the midst of filing proposals to ban them.

There are currently no definitive ways to clear PFAS from the body, which is why the best step we can take is to just avoid them in general.

Fortunately, many organic period panties brands have jumped on board and are now making PFA-free products (but, be warned that organic does not always mean PFA free.)

How We Chose The Best Organic Period Underwear Brands

Uterus(t) us to do the research and that’s exactly what we’ve done here. We all know food can be organic, but did you know that organic clothing exists too?

Yes, that’s clothing made from crops grown without chemical additives or fertilizers or pesticides.

Thanks to the growing world of sustainable and ethical fashion, the demand for organic fabric is growing and while the period underwear line is still lagging behind, they’re starting to get with the flow.

Materials:

Not surprising to anyone, we looked for organic materials here. When it comes to the best period underwear, like these organic pads, organic cotton is by far our favorite choice.

However, GOTS organic cotton period panties are actually still a rarity. Due to the complex nature of effective and sanitary absorbent layers, even those with a mostly organic cotton body usually still had some form of synthetic fabrics used in the leakproof gusset. Which is similar to the options for organic tampons.

So for the sake of providing better options than the stand brands, we also considered brands at least making period underwear non-toxic with PFAS and PFOA-free synthetics, wool, hemp bamboo, lyocell, or modal fabric.

While we definitely prefer all-organic (period, but especially for down there), we recognize that at this time, all organic simply isn’t yet available, even among the best period underwear brands. Hopefully it soon will be!

Supply chain & labor practices:

People should come above profit, no butts about it. Companies that don’t have basic ethics are companies we do not want to support.

We want to know everything about a product: where it’s made, who is involved, how often they work, how they are treated, etc.

Manufacturing certifications help, but transparency is key, something we’re hoping to get a little more of from these brands when we reach out to them.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Providing reusable period pads is already a huge sustainable step for these, but we also look for additional efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and waste, such as using recycled materials and carbon offset programs

Inclusivity:

Everyone deserves to have safe period underwear, which is why we appreciate seeing brands offering a large range of sizes and styles that demonstrate awareness that women aren’t the only people with a menstrual cycle.

Community & charitable giving:

Actions speak louder than words, and we love businesses that show initiative through action. In this case, we especially adore business helping with women empowerment organizations.

Caring For Your Non-Toxic Period Underwear

Buying the best period underwear isn’t the cheapest, at least not compared to regular \underwear.

Though, considering the average menstruating person spends about $7,000 over the source of their life on disposable tampons and pads alone, they’re well worth it.

Still, you want to keep them fit and functional for as long as possible, both for sustainability and financial reasons, so here are some of the best period underwear care tips:

  • Gentle handwashing will preserve the life of your absorbent underwear best.
  • If handwashing them grosses you out, you can toss them in your eco-friendly washing machine. Just machine wash cold and gentle using natural laundry detergent. Cold water actually lifts menstrual blood better than warm water.
  • Do NOT use liquid fabric softeners, as they can permeate the absorbent gusset fabrics. Instead, use non-chemical fabric softener alternatives
  • Never put in the clothes dryer. Hang or lay flat to dry.

Final Thoughts On Non-Toxic Period Underwear Brands

When Aunt Flo comes knocking, you can’t just slam the door in her face. Though her presence may not be wanted, it’s unavoidable.

You can choose to either embrace her with a warm, chemical-free hug or a toxin-laden slap to the face—a slap so powerful that it can cause endocrine disruption, asthma, cancer, and infertility.

Choose to honor your Aunt Flo and invest in safe period underwear.

Whether used as a first line of defense or a backup, they’re an essential item to add to your sustainable menstrual care kit (along with chocolate, menstrual cups, and a hot water bottle).

We prefer gloating to bloating, so tap on (or should we say, tampon) the share button to tell your menstruating friends about your fabulous new PFAS-free period panties.
