We may be searching for the best natural face serums to deliver a youthful glow to our skin, but we weren’t born yesterday. With hundreds of beauty brands toting anti-aging properties, active ingredients, and the cure for troubled skin, greenwashing is just as prevalent in the beauty world as it is in cleaning products. A multi-billion dollar industry, the beauty world doesn’t legally define terms such as “sustainable,” “natural,” and “clean,” creating confusion (and fine lines and wrinkles!) for those of us searching for a truly non-toxic option.
Worse than clogged pores are clogged landfills, with many beauty products ending up as waste. Many conventional serums rely on synthetic fragrances, petroleum derivatives, and preservatives linked to hormone disruption. These ingredients sit on your skin for hours, delivering compounds directly into one of the most porous areas of your body.
After months and years of researching ingredients, testing products ourselves, and evaluating brands through our sustainability rating system, we have narrowed down the best organic serums that actually work better for your skin and the planet.
What We Looked For
In evaluating the best natural and organic face serums for this guide, we prioritized the following (as much as possible):
- Formulas free from parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, mineral oil, and other harmful chemicals
- Use of organic, plant-based, and recognizable natural skincare ingredients that are gentle on skin and effective at delivering results
- Real-world effectiveness for everyday skincare routines
- Sustainability credentials including packaging, sourcing, certifications, and ethical manufacturing
Our Testing, Ratings & Research
In several cases, we used these serums and face oils in our own skincare routines for weeks or months, assessing hydration, skin comfort, absorption, effectiveness, and overall value.
For brands we work with through our sustainability rating system, we evaluated their initiatives across 22 criteria including supply chain, labor practices, and environmental commitments. See other rated brands in our sustainable brand directory.
For brands we didn’t test directly or rate, we conducted careful research to bring you the safest and most effective natural face serums available.

Performance Reviews of Activist’s Serums
Calming Force Serum
“The Activist Skincare Calming Force Serum has been a game-changer for my sensitive skin. It’s incredibly soothing, nearly instantly calming any redness or irritation while giving my skin a much-needed hydration boost. The lightweight formula absorbs quickly, leaving my skin feeling soft and balanced without any greasy residue.”
Review By Amber McDaniel, SJ Head of Content (tested over several months)
Active Hydration Serum
“One of two Activist skin serums I was able to test, the Active Hydration does just what the title suggests: hydrates, except without any oil or sticky film left behind. Because of that, I like to use this to layer with other skincare, like applying it before putting on facial sunscreen for the day.”
Review By Amber McDaniel, SJ Head of Content (tested over several months)
Precious Oils Active Infusion
“If you need extra moisture, I can’t recommend Precious Oil Active Infusion enough. Suitable for all skin types, the dewy skin oil manages oil production and protects against free radical damage through a formulation of coenzyme Q10, bisabolol and a blend of plant-based antioxidants. It’s truly an all-purpose oil-based serum that I use mostly to moisturize my face first thing in the morning, but if I notice my scalp looking a little dry and flaky, I apply it there, too, to great success.”

How We Chose The Best Natural & Organic Face Serums
Ingredient Safety
Every recommendation had to meet our core standards: no parabens, phthalates, PEGs, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, propylene glycol, DEA, or aluminum compounds. We looked for transparent ingredient lists where you can recognize and understand what you are putting on your skin. More on what to avoid and why in the section below.
Organic & Natural Ingredients
We prioritized brands using organic, plant-based, and naturally derived ingredients. Your face absorbs a significant amount of what is applied to it, so organic ingredients ensure you are not layering synthetic pesticide residues onto sensitive facial skin. Natural active ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, and plant-derived retinol alternatives have strong track records for effectiveness without the health concerns.
Effectiveness
A natural face serum is only worth recommending if it delivers results. We prioritized brands we have personally tested, and looked for effective hydration, visible improvement in skin tone and texture, comfortable absorption without greasiness, and reasonable value for the amount of product.
Sustainability Considerations
Given our focus on sustainability, we also considered: low-waste or refillable packaging (glass bottles, aluminum, compostable materials), B Corp or other third-party certifications, cruelty-free and vegan practices (Leaping Bunny, PETA), ethical ingredient sourcing (Fair Trade, direct trade, regenerative agriculture), and transparent supply chains.
Cruelty-Free & Vegan
PETA and Leaping Bunny certifications help ensure your skincare routine does not come at the cost of animal welfare. We chose brands that are mostly vegan, or that sustainably source and ethically handle any non-vegan ingredients (like beeswax from responsible beekeeping). Cruelty-free (no animal testing) is a non-negotiable.
Thoughtful Packaging
From bottling to shipping, we look for brands that take packaging waste as seriously as skincare formulation, ideally with zero waste packaging, refillable systems, or recyclable materials at the very least. If you prefer a hands-on approach, you can also make your own facial or body oil at home. See our guides that will help you do just that: DIY Facial Oil and DIY Body Oil.
Why Choose Natural & Organic Face Serums?
Several easily disguised skin and health hazards are toted as “natural” or “eco-friendly” through greenwashing in our daily skincare routines. Here is what to watch out for:
- Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) are synthetic preservatives found in many conventional serums that can mimic estrogen in the body. Studies have found parabens in nearly all urine samples taken from adults in the US, and the EU has banned certain parabens in cosmetics. The FDA has not yet followed suit.
- Phthalates are often hidden within the catch-all term “fragrance” and are another class of endocrine disruptors associated with reproductive health issues. Because fragrance formulations don’t need to be disclosed on labels, a consumer may not be able to determine from the ingredient declaration if phthalates are present.
- PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum-derived penetration enhancers that can be contaminated with ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen) and 1,4-dioxane. The EWG’s Toxic Twelve guide is a helpful resource for understanding these and other chemicals commonly found in cosmetics.
- Synthetic fragrances can represent dozens of undisclosed chemicals. The International Fragrance Association lists over 3,000 materials used in fragrance compounds, many of which haven’t been thoroughly tested for safety in combination.
- Mineral oil is a petroleum byproduct that can clog pores and may contain contaminants depending on refinement quality.
- DEA (diethanolamine) and propylene glycol are additional chemicals linked to respiratory, immune, and endocrine system effects that we look to avoid.
Natural face serums use plant-derived ingredients that work with your skin rather than introducing synthetic compounds. Organic certification further ensures that the plant ingredients have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
Understanding Face Serums: What They Are They?
What Is a Face Serum?
A face serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing skincare product designed to deliver concentrated active ingredients directly into the skin. Unlike moisturizers which sit on the surface and form a protective barrier, serums penetrate deeper due to their smaller molecular structure.
Face serums typically contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than moisturizers, making them the workhorse of a skincare routine. They can target specific skin concerns like fine lines, dark spots, dullness, dehydration, or breakouts.
Serum vs. Face Oil: What Is the Difference?
Serums are typically water-based and absorb quickly, pulling active ingredients into the skin. Face oils are lipid-based and work by sealing in moisture and reinforcing your skin’s natural barrier. Many of the products on our list are oil-based serums or face oils, which is common among natural skincare brands since plant oils deliver both hydration and nourishment without synthetic carriers.
For best results, many skincare experts recommend applying a water-based serum first, then following with a face oil to lock in moisture. Brands like Activist Skincare design their serum and oil products to work in this way.
Key Natural Ingredients to Look For in Face Serums
Here are some of the most effective ingredients you will find in the serums on our list:
Hydrating & Anti-Aging:
- Hyaluronic acid: Naturally occurring in the body, it holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Plant-derived versions provide intense hydration and plumping.
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): A potent antioxidant that brightens skin, evens tone, and supports collagen production. Look for stable forms in amber or opaque packaging.
- Vitamin E (tocopherol): Protects against free radical damage and supports skin healing. Often combined with vitamin C for enhanced effectiveness.
- Rosehip oil: Rich in vitamins A and C, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. Promotes cell regeneration and helps reduce fine lines and hyperpigmentation.
- Jojoba oil: Closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum, making it easily absorbed and suitable for all skin types. Non-comedogenic.
Soothing & Repairing:
- Bakuchiol: A plant-derived alternative to retinol that offers similar anti-aging benefits without the irritation. Suitable for sensitive skin.
- Aloe vera: Anti-inflammatory and hydrating. Helps soothe redness and irritation.
- Calendula extract: Promotes healing and calms sensitive or irritated skin.
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Minimizes pores, evens skin tone, and strengthens the skin barrier.
- Coenzyme Q10: A naturally occurring antioxidant that decreases with age. Helps protect against sun and blue light damage.
How to Choose the Right Natural Face Serum
For dry skin: Look for oil-based serums rich in essential fatty acids. From our list, Conscious Skincare’s Gentle Serum, A Drop in the Ocean’s Revitalizing Skin Serum, and Plaine Products’ Beauty Oil are excellent choices.
For oily or acne-prone skin: Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Meow Meow Tweet’s Spot Serum targets blemishes specifically. Activist’s Calming Force Serum helps reduce breakouts and irritation.
For aging skin and fine lines: Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinol alternatives are your allies. One Love Organics’ Botanical A Bio-Retinol Serum, Activist’s Active Hydration Serum, and Little Seed Farm’s Vitamin E Elasticity Serum all target signs of aging.
For sensitive skin: Avoid strong acids and synthetic fragrances. Conscious Skincare’s Gentle Serum is specifically formulated for dry, sensitive, and reactive skin. Activist’s Calming Force is another strong option.
For screen-heavy lifestyles: Blue light from devices can contribute to premature aging. Little Seed Farm’s Coenzyme Q10 Serum and One Love Organics’ Love + Rose Serum both address blue light protection.
For budget-conscious shoppers: Meow Meow Tweet’s Spot Serum, Plaine Products’ Beauty Oil, and A Drop in the Ocean’s Revitalizing Skin Serum all deliver quality at accessible price points.
Frequently Asked Questions On Natural & Organic Face Serums
What is the best natural face serum?
The best natural face serum depends on your skin type and concerns. For an all-around option from a brand with top sustainability credentials, Activist Skincare’s range stands out. For dry skin, oil-based serums like Conscious Skincare’s Gentle Serum or A Drop in the Ocean’s Revitalizing Skin Serum provide deep nourishment. For anti-aging, One Love Organics’ vitamin C and bio-retinol serums deliver targeted results.
Do natural face serums actually work?
Yes, many natural ingredients have well-documented skincare benefits. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, rosehip oil, jojoba oil, and niacinamide all have research supporting their effectiveness. In our testing, Activist Skincare, One Love Organics, and other brands on this list have delivered visible improvements in hydration, skin tone, and texture.
What is the difference between a serum and a face oil?
Serums are typically water-based, lightweight, and designed to deliver active ingredients deep into the skin. Face oils are lipid-based and primarily work to seal in moisture and protect the skin barrier. Many natural skincare brands create oil-based serums that combine the benefits of both.
Are organic face serums worth the extra cost?
Organic certification ensures that plant-based ingredients have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, meaning fewer chemical residues on your skin. Given that your face absorbs a significant portion of what is applied to it, organic ingredients are a worthwhile investment, particularly for serums that stay on the skin all day or night.
Can I use a natural face serum if I have acne-prone skin?
Absolutely. Many natural oils like jojoba, hemp seed, and grapeseed are non-comedogenic (they will not clog pores). Meow Meow Tweet’s Spot Serum is specifically designed for blemish-prone skin. Look for lightweight formulas and avoid heavy oils like coconut oil on your face if you are prone to breakouts.
How often should I use a face serum?
Most serums can be used once or twice daily (morning and evening). Apply to clean, slightly damp skin before moisturizer. A few drops are typically sufficient for the entire face.
What is the best natural serum for aging skin?
For anti-aging, look for serums with vitamin C (for brightening and collagen support), hyaluronic acid (for plumping and hydration), retinol alternatives like bakuchiol (for cell turnover without irritation), and antioxidant-rich plant oils like rosehip. From our list, One Love Organics’ Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum and Activist’s Active Hydration Serum are strong choices.
Is vitamin C serum safe for sensitive skin?
Vitamin C is generally well tolerated, but some forms (like pure L-ascorbic acid) can irritate sensitive skin. Look for stabilized or buffered forms of vitamin C, or opt for a gentle alternative like Conscious Skincare’s Rejuvenate Serum which uses marine algae and organic oils to provide antioxidant protection without potential irritation.
How should I store natural face serums?
Natural serums, especially those with vitamin C or minimal preservatives, are best stored in a cool, dark place. Amber glass bottles (like those from Conscious Skincare and A Drop in the Ocean) help protect ingredients from light degradation. If a serum changes color, develops an unusual smell, or separates significantly, it may have oxidized and should be replaced.
Are natural serums safe during pregnancy?
Some natural ingredients like retinol (including plant-derived forms from carrot seed oil) should be avoided during pregnancy. Conscious Skincare specifically notes that their Gentle Serum contains a retinol source and is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Always check ingredient lists and consult your healthcare provider. Final Thoughts On The Best Natural Face Serums
Face serums can make a real difference to how your skin looks and feels, so if you are going to use one, it is worth choosing a formula that is as good for the planet as it is for your complexion.
The majority of us want a healthy appearance free of dead skin cells and dark spots, both on our skin and in a brand’s sustainability practices. For some, vitamin C, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid may do the trick. For others, plant-derived retinol alternatives and antioxidant-rich oils may be the answer to fine lines and wrinkles.
Whatever your skin concern, it is worth knowing what is in the product you are about to put on your body’s largest organ. Many of the brands on this list have experts ready to answer your skincare questions and recommend which serum may best fit your needs (Activist Skincare has a handy quiz).
