Dr. Bronner’s Chemical-Free Cleaning Products

Price Range: $10–$66

Wondering, “How can I clean my house without toxic chemicals?”

Dr. Bronner’s has the answer—for cleaning everything with just one all-in-one product.

All-One isn’t just an optimistic name; it’s exactly what this soap is. With 18 (and honestly more) uses for this one pure castile soap, there’s nothing it can’t do.

We always keep a bottle on hand, where we need it as emergency non-toxic dish soap, laundry detergent, non-toxic toilet bowl cleaner, floor cleaner, or the occasional use as eco-friendly carpet cleaner.

Biodegradable according to OECD Guideline 310, this organic non-toxic cleaning product contains no synthetic preservatives, detergents, or foaming agents, only certified fair trade ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, hemp seed oil, and jojoba oil, all of which are organic.

While we don’t love the 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottle, we do love that Dr. B now offers liquid soap refills in FSC-certified paper cartons with aluminum lining.

About Dr Bronner’s

Dr. Bronner’s is a Certified B Corp, committed to fair trade practices and offering employees 100% free health care, yearly bonuses, and profit sharing.

Its green business practices are equally impressive and include recycling, water-saving, renewable energy, sustainable ingredient sourcing (especially where palm oil is concerned), and sustainable shipping materials.

They also support a variety of causes including animal advocacy, drug reform, plant medicine, wage equality, and youth services.

SuperBee’s Healthiest Cleaning Products

Price Range: $50

Sure, we love the paper towel alternatives from SuperBee when it comes to cleaning, this non-toxic cleaner brand offers something even more superb(ee).

Introducing: the Hexawash, which is our personal favorite new laundry detergent.

It’s SuperBee’s laundry detergent substitute, and while $50 might seem like a sizable investment in a laundry detergent, that’s until you realize it’s good for more than 300 loads—which works out at $0.16 per load.

That’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind you get from using organic laundry soap which contains none of those nasty chemicals found in conventional detergents.

Instead, the Hexawash uses magnesium to keep your whites, well, whiter than white, and if that sounds suspect to you, let us personally assure you it really works.

In addition, fully biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and comes with a GOTS-certified organic cotton storage pouch.

About SuperBee

In addition to their laundry detergent, SuperBee offers a full range of sustainable kitchen products: beeswax wraps, dish soap, and other cleaning essentials are all in SuperBee’s repertoire.

This social enterprise is located in Northern Thailand, where they employ a dedicated team of locals who are paid 20% more than the Fair Trade Association’s suggested living wage.

Other causes that are close to SuperBee’s heart include women’s empowerment, creating rural employment opportunities for women, enforcing the labor laws of Thailand, and supporting local volunteer firefighters who would otherwise have insufficient gear and supplies.

7. etee

*Note: Some of etee’s liquid cleaning products come packaged in compostable beeswax tubes.

etee’s Food Safe Dish Soap

Price Range: $12–$44

If you’re looking for a selection of dish soaps, etee has three to choose from: a liquid concentrate, dish soap bar, or eco-friendly dishwasher detergent powder.

Our favorite is the Citrus Sunshine Liquid Concentrate, which really does make our kitchen smell like citrus (naturally) and our dishes shine like sunshine.

No matter which you choose, this safe cleaning brand promises products that are palm oil free, vegan, and formulated with all plant-based USDA organic certified ingredients.

It comes in an innovative beeswax refill pod, making it plastic free and fully compostable (though we actually save our pods and eventually re-melt them into new beeswax items).

The dish soap itself is free from foaming agents, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, sulfates, parabens, unnatural preservatives, and any formaldehyde based.

Complete your non-toxic cleaning kit with one of their Loofie scrubbers.

About etee

There’s not enough room to regal you of etee’s story, but you’ll find it here.

But what started as a shop in a friend’s basement making beeswax wraps became a more solid business idea after the patter of tiny feet got etee’s owner thinking.

What we particularly admire about this zero waste online store, is that they produce everything they sell—which ranges vastly from toothpaste and floss to dish and laundry soap—and have complete oversight of the supply chain.

Production takes place in a factory that’s powered by renewable energy and ship via carbon neutral shipping.

8. VOYA

VOYA’s Non-Toxic Dish Strips

Price Range: $14–20

With VOYA’s version of eco-friendly dishwasher tablets is actually a dishwashing strip that’s even lighter to ship and store in your safe cleaner cabinet.

These clean dishwasher detergent papers are mineral and plant-based, vegan, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free, but they do contain PVA/PVOH.

We’ve tested these and especially like that, unlike tablets and pods, these can also be used for washing dishes by hand. Simply tear off half a sheet at the perforation, versus using a whole sheet on the top rack of your dishwasher.

About VOYA

VOYA is a Canadian brand who wants to make an impact on the plastic waste in the sea—which will outnumber fish by 2050 if we don’t do something.

Hence, VOYA’s dissolvable paper products come in compostable packaging.

Ecologie by Danica’s Non-Toxic Cleaning Cloths

Price Range: $6–$42

When it comes to the safest cleaning brands, it’s not just the cleaning product that’s important, but the cleaning tools which which you use it.

Did you know Americans use over 13 billion pounds of paper towels each year?

Swapping to paper towel alternatives, then, is a no-brainer, especially when companies like Ecologie by Danica make such a cool addition to your kitchen and bathroom cleaning arsenal.

We’re obsessed with their reusable Swedish dishcloths, which are super absorbent and can handle all our cleaning needs for months (with some sanitizing runs in the dishwasher in between) before finally wearing out.

When they do, their 70% cellulose and 30% cotton construction means we can just toss them in our indoor compost bin.

A range of fun patterns are available, all of which are designed by the brand’s parent home decor company, Danica.

About Ecologie by Danica

This non-toxic cleaning brand’s clothes are made in Sweden.

Some profits are donated to Education Without Borders, an organization that provides educational resources and opportunities to communities in need.

Why Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Products?

Many conventional cleaning products may do a decent job of getting your house cleaner, but they’re dirtying up our air, our bodies, and our planet.

There are no shortage of reasons to choose chemical-free cleaners:

  • Healthier indoor air quality: Non-toxic cleaning products contain no harsh chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The EPA found that cleaning chemicals cause indoor air pollution that’s three times as likely to cause cancer as outdoor air pollution.
  • Safer for children and pets: Pets and children are more vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals because of their smaller size and developing immune systems, so pet safe cleaners are a must. Between child poisonings, a 20x increase in asthma, and chemicals being found in the blood of newborn babies, it’s clear something needs to change.
  • Reduced chemical exposure: Non-toxic natural cleaners use gentle ingredients that are less likely to cause skin reactions.
  • Water quality preservation: By using non-toxic products, you’re minimizing water pollution and protecting local water sources.
  • Sustainability: Many non-toxic cleaning products are made using renewable and sustainable resources. We also look for sustainable manufacturing practices.
  • Allergen & irritant reduction: Non-toxic house cleaner is less likely to contain allergens or irritants that can trigger allergies or sensitivities in vulnerable individuals.

And let’s not forget about the long-term health benefits you get from all that. When you consistently use non-toxic cleaning products you’re contributing to your long-term health and well-being by reducing your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals over time.

How We Found the Best Safe Cleaning Products

So just what is non-toxic cleaner?

In today’s world of greenwashing and “natural” products, it can be difficult to know whether you’re truly getting the safest cleaners or not.

DIY non-toxic cleaning products tend to be the safest bet because you make them with ingredients such as lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar—AKA the BEST natural thing to clean with.

However, if you don’t have the time to make your own cleaning, you can still determine what are the best non-toxic cleaning products by using our sustainable beauty and cleaning criteria.

The criteria we use are similar for many of the cleaning products we review. To help us sift our way through the dirt and grime we consider the following:

  • Natural and organic ingredients: Whether the products are non-toxic dish soaps or eco-friendly laundry detergent brands, we look for ingredients such as organic coconut oil, baking soda, lemon juice, tea tree oil, and organic castile soap.
  • Cruelty-free and vegan: A common ingredient in household cleaning products is glycerin, which can be sourced from animal fat or plant oil. We look for brands that use no animal byproducts. Not testing on animals is also important.
  • Palm oil-free: Palm oil is commonly found in many soaps and detergents and while there are better options (like RSPO certified sustainable palm oil), we prefer not to see it used at all.
  • Ethical ingredient sourcing
  • Thoughtful packaging: We look for refillable cleaning products, recycled plastic bottles, or compostable zero waste packaging.

Final Thoughts On The Safest Cleaning Products

Cleaning your home should be much more than simply removing the dirt and grime.

It should also be about removing toxic chemicals you might otherwise be introducing to both your home and our collective one.

While choosing to use the non-toxic bathroom cleaning products might seem like a small thing to do, over your lifetime, it’s going to have an enormous effect.

You can champion the cause of non-toxic cleaning further by sharing this list with anyone whose home could use a safe sprucing up—which is to say all of us!
