9 Non-Toxic Deodorant Brands For The Safest Eco-Friendly Freshness
Do you smell that?
It’s the sweet scent of non-toxic deodorant.
Conventional deodorant brands don’t only contribute to plastic waste through hard-to-recycle plastic; they contain harmful ingredients that can impact human health.
Ingredients like parabens, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, and aluminum can block your pores, disrupt normal hormone function, irritate the skin, and do a lot, a lot more.
That’s why it just makes scents to switch to safe deodorant brands—but what deodorants are not toxic?
Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. 1. Alpine Provisions
Alpine Provisions’ Non-Toxic Men’s Deodorant
Alpine Provisions makes non-toxic deodorant that works (really!) using natural and organic ingredients.
They offer activated charcoal deodorants to suit any skin type, as the formulas feature probiotics to support a healthy balance of bacteria to keep body odor at bay.
The deodorant sticks are available in scents like Fir + Sage and Cedar + Sandalwood (making these excellent choices for non-toxic deodorant for men) without toxic chemicals or alcohol.
Instead, they utilize ingredients like sodium bicarbonate, shea butter, charcoal powder, and pure essential oils to develop their clean deodorants.
The complete list of ethically sourced ingredients includes corn starch, coconut oil, caprylic/capric triglyceride, candelilla wax, sodium bicarbonate, shea butter, probiotic bacillus ferment, charcoal powder, and sustainably sourced pure essential oils.
The deodorant sticks do contain caprylic/capric triglyceride (which can either be derived from coconut oil or palm kernel), but Alpine states theirs comes from coconut oil.
You’ll find every deodorant without parabens, aluminum, gluten, BPA, petroleum, or animal byproducts.
After a concerted effort to enter the plastic-free club, each tube comes in durable and recyclable paperboard materials.
About Alpine Provisions
Joshua Onysko started the Boulder, Colorado-based brand as a way to support the environment and create a positive social movement.
To fuel his ambition, he ensured everything was sustainably sourced, petroleum-free, vegan, Leaping Bunny certified, and mostly organic.
Besides switching to recyclable aluminum bottles for their shampoo and body washes, Alpine encourages remote work to reduce its footprint further.
The healthy men’s deodorant is made in the United States, and Alpine donates a portion of its profits to the Colorado Outward Bound School Scholarship Fund, which helps underprivileged youth gain leadership experiences in the great outdoors.
2. Fat and the Moon
*Note: Fat and the Moon uses beeswax in their deodorants.
Fat and the Moon’s Safest Underarm Deodorant
Fat and the Moon handcrafts aluminum and phthalate-free deodorants “for the full spectrum of stinky”.
We’ve tried the Aluminum Free Deodorant Cream and can confirm it’s one of the best non-toxic deodorants on our list.
The cruelty-free creams don’t contain any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or toxins. Instead, they fight underarm odor with natural ingredients like coconut oil, arrowroot powder, beeswax, and antibacterial essential oils.
If you’re seeking the best non-toxic deodorant for sensitive skin, the Sensitive Pit Cream is sodium bicarbonate free.
Both natural deodorants are packaged in reusable glass jars and lightly scented with black pepper, bergamot, and a bit of citrus.
Keep in mind that while the chemical-free deodorant is cruelty-free, it’s not 100% vegan, as it contains ethically sourced beeswax.
About Fat and the Moon
The handmade beauty supplies and natural deodorants come from Grass Valley, California. The dry shampoos, sustainable moisturizers, face masks, oils, and more are all made to order—ensuring the utmost quality.
Fat and the Moon explicitly states which ingredients are and aren’t organic but don’t include palm oil in any products.
The woman-owned company uses plastic-free packaging and ships in recycled packaging, minimizing waste whenever possible.
The team also contributes to several organizations and causes within their community whenever possible.
3. Noniko
Noniko’s Safest Natural Deodorant
Noniko is one of the first refillable paraben-free deodorant brands we’ve seen.
The aluminum-free deodorant is packaged in a sleek stainless steel case with a cork refill topper that’s compostable in the backyard, allowing you to reduce waste and mask odor without any fuss.
With three natural fragrance options to choose from, like the citrus and bergamot notes of Sundaze, lavender, and peppermint of Unwind, or a baking soda-free, bright Drift, you’re sure to find a favorite.
The formulas don’t contain any harmful chemicals, parabens, preservatives, or plastic. Instead, Noniko uses natural ingredients that absorb moisture, like coconut oil, arrowroot powder, magnesium hydroxide, and essential oils.
When you run out of your favorite fragrance, you can toss it in the box it arrived in, seal it with a return label, and send it back for cleaning, sanitizing, and refilling.
The clean, non-toxic deodorant sticks do contain beeswax, so they aren’t entirely vegan-friendly, but sustainable sourcing ensures no bees are harmed in the collection of the beeswax.
About Noniko
Noniko was founded by Kerri Leslie after she struggled to find safe deodorant to use that actually worked. What started in her kitchen has quickly grown into a small-batch studio based out of San Diego, California.
Noniko has always been committed to minimizing waste, using 100% plastic-free packaging. The deodorant comes in a stainless steel housing with compostable cork tops, shipping in recyclable FSC-certified Kraft paper boxes and plastic-free materials.
They ship using carbon-neutral USPS services only, which is lower impact because USPS already visits most neighborhoods.
The woman and mom-owned brand is also a member of 1% For the Planet, donating a portion of its sales to support various non-profit organizations.
4. EcoRoots
*Note: Some EcoRoots products contain sustainably-sourced palm oil, but their deodorants are palm oil free.
EcoRoots’ Safe Deodorant For Men & Women
Another brand we know and love for its catalog of home and personal care supplies is EcoRoots.
They produce some of the safest deodorant for women and women alike that work with the body’s biological functions to minimize odor without blocking your pores.
If you prefer slide-on sticks, you can select from Coconut, Lavender, or Eucalyptus Mint—all of which are aluminum and baking soda free.
The formulas of organic coconut oil, arrowroot powder, and wildcrafted candelilla wax come in compostable cardboard tubes to reduce excess moisture and waste.
EcoRoots also has a Plastic-Free Deodorant Cream shipping in a reusable glass jar designed for sensitive skin. Alongside the same scents, you can select from Unscented, Citrus, and Rose Geranium.
Both of the safe, non-toxic deodorants are handmade without any parabens, silicone, preservatives, palm oil, or toxic ingredients.
We’ve tested both of them, and can confirm they provide long-lasting odor protection and keep our pits feeling pretty dry except in the hottest conditions.
About EcoRoots
EcoRoots is one of our favorite non-toxic deodorant brands. What started as a small-scale marketplace for ethical cleaning supplies has quickly grown into a superstar sustainable beauty brand.
If you’re looking for zero waste swaps to start your journey, they’re a good place to start.

EcoRoots ships everything in plastic-free packaging and donates a portion of sales to the Ocean Conservancy through their 1% For the Planet membership.
5. Little Seed Farm
*Note: Little Seed Farms deodorants contain ethically sourced beeswax.
Little Seed Farm’s Non-Cancerous Deodorant
The Little Seed Farm makes some of the best non-toxic deodorants for sensitive skin and dry skin.
But don’t think that means the Aluminum and Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream can’t suit all skin types. The formula is designed for long-lasting odor protection for upwards of 24 hours for anyone.
Little Seed forgoes baking soda in favor of arrowroot, as baking soda can disrupt the body’s natural pH. Absorbing excess moisture is arrowroots’ specialty, while food-grade magnesium helps minimize unpleasant body odor.
Cucumber, Rosemary Patchouli, Jasmine Green Tea, and Activated Charcoal scents are packaged in reusable glass jars and recyclable packaging.
The scents contain organic and natural ingredients, like arrowroot powder, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and various essential oils.
The safe deodorant cream is non-GMO and Leaping Bunny certified, but it does contain organic beeswax, so it’s not vegan-friendly.
About Little Seed Farm
Little Seed Farm isn’t just one of the safest women’s deodorant brands; they’re a family-owned business from rural Tennessee practicing what they preach.
Husband and wife James and Eileen, founded the beauty brand after purchasing 84 acres of land that had been depleted of its natural biodiversity over the years. The team got to work, implementing regenerative farming techniques for their goats to bring the land back to life.
The 100% grass-fed goats allow the team to create goat milk soap, lotion, balms, natural face serum, and other sustainable beauty products.
The farm is run exclusively on solar power, while ingredients are sourced from local and global organic partners upholding their sustainability commitments. non
They use 100% biodegradable sorghum packing peanuts, glass jars, and recyclable materials whenever possible.
The Little Seed Farm has also contributed to various charities and businesses through auctions, giveaways, and other initiatives over the years.
6. Hammonds Herbs
*Note: Hammond Herbs deodorants contain ethically sourced and certified organic beeswax.
Hammonds Herbs’ Healthy Men’s Deodorant
Hammonds Herbs have a wide range of healthy deodorant scents, like Lemongrass & Peppermint, Tea Tree & Lavender, and Bergamot & Lime.
While anyone can wear it, the Orange & Patchouli is one of the healthiest deodorants for men, as it has a rich, woody’s scent with hints of citrus to keep you smelling great.
No matter your odor of choice, however, it’ll come packaged in a biodegradable push-up tube with a retro design you won’t find on a conventional deodorant stick.
Each option is aluminum and paraben free, without any synthetic fragrances, preservatives, propylene glycol, or animal testing.
Instead, Hammonds prioritizes natural ingredients, like cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, shea butter, arrowroot powder, non-GMO vitamin E oil, baking soda, and essential oil.
However, the all-natural deodorant contains organic beeswax, so it’s not vegan-friendly, but one of the founders is a beekeeper who one day hopes to produce all their own beeswax. Until then, it’s sourced ethically.
About Hammond Herbs
Jeff and Elise Hammond started with handcrafted, small-batch beauty supplies as a way to combat toxic ingredients in beauty supplies.
Now, the Jackson, Kentucky-based brand produces shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and toothpaste.
The products incorporate ethically sourced materials from Mountain Rose Herbs or nearby Fair Trade sources.
As nature enthusiasts, Jeff and Elise package everything in compostable containers and ship all purchases in 100% plastic-free materials.

Butter Me Up Organics’ Organic & Non-Toxic Deodorants
Those with sensitive skin and pits will certainly feel buttered up by Butter Me Up Organics.
Their Organic Deodorant cream contains just eight simple, understandable ingredients, like shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot, powder, kaolin clay, coconut oil, and a few gentle essential oils for scent.
It’s easily about the safest, most effective deodorant creams we’ve tried—and we’ve tried a lot (beyond those listed here).
While we’ve been disappointed to find some of the most popular aluminum free options available leave us needing to reapply multiple times a day, we can get away with only reapplying this one once later in the afternoon (or not at all on cooler days!).
Which is very impressive given our natural microbiome tends to make us a bit stinkier than some.
Because the rosemary and lavender scent is so pleasantly subtle, it can make for the safest men’s deodorant, kid’s deodorant, whatever!
And if you’re just now making the switch to non-toxic deodorants, start with their Arm Pit Detox to make the switch less stinky.
About Butter Me Organics
Whether you need biodegradable sunscreen or shampoo, Butter Me Up Organics can naturally lubricate your entire personal care routine with all-natural, non-toxic ingredients.
Everything is cruelty-free, and the only animal byproduct used is ethically-sourced beeswax.
They’re also one of our favorite zero waste skin care brands, thanks to everything being housed in either glass jars or compostable cardboard tubes—if it’s housed in anything at all!
Any extra funds go toward supporting causes near and dear to them, like fighting wildfires in their home state of California or animal welfare organizations.
9. Pit Putty
*Note: We are confirming policies directly with this brand.
Pit Putty’s Pregnancy Safe Deodorant
What is the safest deodorant to use?
Pit Putty is some of the safest underarm deodorants UK residents can find—it’s like a little green guardian angel, protecting your pits and the planet one swipe at a time.
It’s packed with ingredients like organic unrefined shea butter, arrowroot powder, organic coconut oil, naturally mined baking soda, candelilla wax, sunflower seed oil, jojoba seed oil, vitamin E oil, and various essential oils that determine each scent.
While some of the floral scents—Lavender Lemon, and Rose Geranium—serve as the best non-toxic women’s deodorant, the more neutral Cinnamon Cedarwood, Lime Basil, and Lemongrass Tea Tree oil scents are designed for everyone.
The scents are chosen not only for their delightful smell, but also for the antioxidant and skin benefits of the essential oils behind each hold.
We especially love the looks of the Lemongrass Tea Tree for its anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving properties.
If you need the best non-toxic deodorant for sensitive skin, they also have a fragrance ree option.
And if you’re looking for the safest deodorant for kids, don’t miss out on their popular, specialty Fresh Clear Lime Basil Teenager Bundle.
All these natural deodorants are vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, aluminum-free, propylene glycol-free, and palm oil-free.
What makes it different from other deodorants we’ve tried?
Its mildly alkaline state makes it react with the acidic by-product made by the bacteria so it can neutralize it.
About Pit Putty
Born from bad BO and five failed attempts at finding an effective natural alternative to deodorant, Pit Putty aims to bring the effectiveness of conventional deodorants without all the dangerous toxins and ingredients.
They started in the kitchen, and while they’re since graduated from that, everything is still made by hand in-house using premium, sustainably sourced ingredients.
Everything is packaged in recyclable or compostable materials, including the cardboard sticks their deodorants come in.

Why Choose Safe Deodorant?
Deodorant might not be something you think much about. But you use it every morning, after the gym, and certainly before date night. So why should you scrutinize the two-pack of conventional deodorant you pick up every two weeks at the drugstore?
Besides contributing an estimated 15 billion pounds of plastic waste each year that’s made from near-impossible-to-recycle plastic, traditional products typically contain harmful ingredients.
Many of the fancy fragrances you’ll see on shelves contain ingredients like parabens, phthalates, triclosan, and synthetic fragrances.
These ingredients may be linked to cancer, hormone disruption, birth defects, skin irritation, allergies, and other health complications.
We’ll take the bad BO over that, thanks.
So, what deodorants are safe to use? Surely, there must be a deodorant that doesn’t cause cancer.
Natural deodorants should have short ingredient lists containing some of the following:
- coconut oil
- kaolin clay
- bicarbonate soda
- shea butter
- tea tree oils
- arrowroot powder
- carnauba wax
- vegetable glycerin (coconut derived)
- clove essential oil
- tocopherol (vitamin E; sunflower-derived)
- theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter
- citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) peel oil
- citrus aurantifolia (lime) oil
Is aluminum safe in deodorant?
One of the primary ingredients in antiperspirant deodorant is aluminum salts.
Aluminum salts act as an antiperspirant to help you sweat less by dissolving into the skin and blocking the pores.
But our bodies are meant to sweat—beyond temperature regulation, it’s how we remove toxins (like heavy metals, BPA, and PCB) and maintain normal bodily function.
But are there any non-toxic antiperspirants?
Not really. In fact, the term “safest antiperspirant deodorant” is a bit of an oxymoron. A good natural deodorant can absorb a little moisture, but it shouldn’t stop you from sweating altogether like aluminum does.
Furthermore, aluminum is a highly biologically reactive neurotoxin that may be linked to breast cancer, kidney disease, bone disease, and memory complications like Alzheimers.
More research needs to be conducted, but natural deodorants should never contain these ingredients or stop you from sweating. Instead, they can include elements like kaolin clay that absorbs sweat.
Do Non-Toxic Deodorants Work?
If you have tried to swap from traditional spray or roll-on products to non-toxic alternatives, you know how difficult it can be.
Traditional products contain antiperspirants to stop you from sweating, but obviously, these can be harmful to your health.
Non-toxic deodorants do not prevent sweat. Instead, they minimize moisture and odor-causing bacteria.
But will these formulas keep you smelling fresh?
We’ve tried various toxin-free deodorants and can confirm they do work. Though, it can take a bit of trial and error to find the right products, ingredients, and quality.
It’s also important to stay realistic. If you’re commuting to work by foot or bike in the hot summer, you might need a more potent formula or a reapplication before heading into the office.
Overall, natural, sustainable deodorants get the job done and contain healthy ingredients for you and the environment.
How We Found The Safest Deodorants
So what is the best non-toxic deodorant and did we figure it out?
Don’t worry; we’ll make everything make scents.
Here are the ethical and sustainable beauty criteria we used to find the best toxin-free deodorant brands:
- Non-toxic: Of course, one of the most important aspects we look for is the absence of harmful chemicals and heavy metals. This means seeking aluminum-free, phthalate-free, and paraben-free deodorant without propylene glycol and other skin irritating ingredients to avoid in skincare.
- like aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
- Cruelty-free and vegan: We have no space in our lives or medicine cabinet for brands that test on animals. Many conventional brands apply products directly to animals’ skins or eyes, which does not pass the sniff test. Besides ethically sourced beeswax, we don’t want any animal products going into our deodorants.
- Palm oil-free: Or RSPO certified palm oil.
- Ethical ingredient sourcing policies
- Thoughtful packaging: We prioritize brands with plastic-free, recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging. At the very least, there should be options for zero waste packaging and shipping materials.
Although it isn’t mandatory, brands that give back to charitable organizations and causes are a plus.
Final Thoughts On Clean & Non-Toxic Deodorants
It’s recommended not to sweat the small stuff, but this doesn’t apply to the harmful ingredients in conventional deodorants.
We turn our noses up to toxic parabens, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, and aluminum you find in the beauty aisle of drug stores.
Instead, we prioritize the best clean deodorant that doesn’t clog our pores or disrupt our body’s natural hormone function.
