Put your worries to bed by supporting your sleep cycle with non-toxic bed frames. Why? Because a nightmarish 9.8 million tons of furniture ends up in landfills every.single.year.

If that doesn’t make you toss and turn, then maybe the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde in your old bed frame might – literally, considering studies have found that exposure to VOCs negatively affects sleep health and even sleep disorders.

While VOCs are likely not the only reason 25% of Americans suffer from insomnia (cough, cough blue light before bed and dysregulated circadian rhythms), switching to a non-off-gassing bed frame is one of the easiest steps we can take toward better sleep and non-toxic living.

So to that end, we’ve curated a list of bed frames made by brands who not only use safe materials for your health but also ethical labor and transparent supply chains.

Additionally, our new Brand Rating System assesses brands (who choose to opt in) across a range of safety and sustainability-related criteria, like chemical use and climate impact. Look out for the rated brands on the list below and find all our other ratings in our directory.

We independently research all featured brands, and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. We explain this further in our Terms of Use.

Nest Bedding’s Woodland Platform Bed is handcrafted to order by woodworking experts in Arizona using solid ash wood and finished with a non-toxic, water-based stain. Designed with a minimalist, slatted platform base, it eliminates the need for a box spring while providing strong support with slats spaced just 2.75 inches apart—ideal for foam or latex mattresses. The slats are made from untreated pinewood.

The affordable non-toxic bed frame (USD499 at the time of writing) is engineered for easy, tool-free assembly thanks to its corner hook system, and the parts are replaceable to extend the bed’s lifespan. Because it’s made entirely from natural wood with a clean finish, it avoids the formaldehyde and toxic adhesives common in MDF or particleboard frames.

The Woodland currently (at the time of writing) averages 4.3 out of 5 stars for customer reviews.

Savvy Rest

Savvy Rest has not been rated.

Price Range: $779 – $4,799

Savvy Rest offers solid wood, zero-VOC platform bed frames with or without a headboard (either slatted or solid) in the full range of sizes. They also make a tech-enhanced adjustable bed frame, and a floating bedside table for extra customization. Each frame is made to order.

The beds are handcrafted in Virginia, USA by Savvy Rest’s own skilled woodworkers with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. They’re made from sustainably sourced maple, red oak, and poplar. They are then finished with either natural linseed oil or zero-VOC walnut, cedar, or mahogany stain – or you can order them unstained. No toxic varnishes, lacquers, glues, stains, or particleboard are used in production.

Reinforced by solid steel, their beds are easy to assemble and come highly reviewed by their customers. Savvy Rest is an employee-owned Certified B Corp and member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council. Their wood is Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable.

Thuma

Thuma has not been rated.

Price Range: $1,395–$2,185

Thuma is the self-proclaimed maker of “the perfect platform bed frame”. And we might just have to agree, considering the minimalist, modern foundation is an easy-to-reach height, doesn’t require a box spring, and sports “lifestyle-enhancing details” sure to upgrade any space (along with the planet).

The Bed Frame keeps it simple down to its name and tool-free interlocking Japanese joinery. You can get it in twin all the way up to California King, as well as a separate daybed option.

Sleep soundly on handcrafted repurposed rubberwood which is upcycled from rubber tree plantations close to Thuma’s factories. They take sustainable sourcing to a new level, using only trees that have reached the end of their latex-producing years and would otherwise be discarded. The double-strength slats are made with Eco-fi recycled plastic felt, which eliminates those creaky bed noises.

Many of their bed frames are GREENGUARD Gold certified (see their FAQ section to confirm which), and they’re built to last a lifetime.

Instead of styrofoam, recycled cardboard is used for protective packaging and their inbound shipping is carbon neutral.

Birch

Birch has not been rated.

Price Range: $249-$1,248

Birch Living turns nature into non-toxic nap-worthy products, and they’ve been recognized around the globe (and by us, since we own one) for their premium mattresses and toppers. You’ll also find a complete range of bed frames to match, from twin to an XL-California king.

Their range includes the Madison Bed Frame which is made with FSC Certified hardwood spruce rails, pine slats, and maple legs. Each wooden piece is treated with a water-based finish with zero VOCs or formaldehyde. It is handcrafted and assembled in the USA and is backed by a 25-year warranty to ensure quality and functionality.

Birch also offsets a portion of its carbon footprint and its manufacturing facilities are Greenguard Gold certified (though this applies to the mattresses and not the frames).

Price Range: $399–$6,999

Avocado is famous for their mattresses but avo-got-o surprise for you: that’s not all they make. In addition to mattresses and bedding, they make a variety of home furniture goods, including several styles of eco-friendly twin bed frames. Their frames also go all the way up to Cali King sizes and includes a dog bed frame in 2 sizes.

Whether you want a minimalist platform with just legs, or a full headboard-frame combo, they have an option for you. A perfect middle ground is the Mid-Century Modern Bed Frame, which features a slatted platform to allow your mattress to breathe without a box spring, but still has a little flair with a simple headboard.

Avocado uses either reclaimed Douglas fir wood rescued from local sources in California, or FSC-certified solid walnut, pine, maple, and alder woods, finished with VOC and formaldehyde-free sealants. There’s also an adjustable bed frame made with metal, 100% GOTS organic certified cotton canvas, and rubberwood legs.

Many bed frames are handcrafted in an FSC-certified Los Angeles woodshop, located within the brand’s GOTS-certified mattress factory. As a Certified B-Corp, production teams are paid living wages and enjoy progressive benefits, like family healthcare and three weeks of paid vacation.

The Sustainable Furnishings Council member and Climate Neutral Certified company offsets more emissions through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation than they generate. Their mattresses are certified or verified by several safety related certifying organizations including Greenguard, GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, MADE SAFE, eco-INSTITUT, and EWG.

Medley

Medley has not been rated.

Price Range: $2,795–$4,695

Medley’s beds and other home furnishings are handmade with natural, non-toxic materials. You can choose between solid wood and upholstered designs, but since we always value a little extra storage to keep our bedroom free of clutter, we especially like the looks of the Buden Bed, which features not only drawers and footboard shelves, but a headboard that doubles as a bedside (er, bed top?) table.

Solid wood options include FSC-certified white maple, American walnut, or American alder finished with water-based, zero VOC glues and all-natural eco Daddy Van’s wax so they’re totally free of fire retardants, heavy metals, ozone depleters, known carcinogens, and phthalates.

Upholstered bed frames are padded with GOLS-certified latex foam wrapped in OEKO-TEX certified wool.

Medley is a non-toxic furniture brand and is handcrafted in an LA-based California factory.

Saatva

Saatva has not been rated.

Price Range: $795–$2,795

From organic comforters to mattresses, Saatva brings sophisticated Scandinavian furniture design to your bedroom, like platform and legged upholstered bed frames in various designs depending on how much underbed clearance you need. Since the platform is integrated, no additional foundations or box springs are required.

Those like the classic-meets-contemporary Valencia come with a fully upholstered headboard and all are compatible with their adjustable bases.

Each bed features sustainably sourced hardwood, kiln dried to ensure it won’t warp, steel legs, and premium plywood slats. The upholstered exterior is either made of a cotton/poly “vintage velvet”, naturally dyed linen, or leather. But since they don’t provide specifics of how their leather is sourced and processed, we suggest avoiding these models.

We know Saatva manufactures their bedding in a Fair Trade Certified factory in India and their mattresses and organic comforters in the USA, but we haven’t heard a response as to where their furniture is crafted.

Saatva prioritizes durability, as seen in the premium woods and fortified joints of their bed frames and lifetime warranty on all mattresses and a mattress recycling service when it does wear out.

Why Choose a Sustainable and Non-Toxic Bed Frame

A bed frame seems “background,” but it’s the foundation of your whole sleep setup. Choosing a frame that’s both sustainably made and low-tox reduces your exposure to problem chemicals, supports better indoor air quality, and usually lasts longer (which is better for your wallet and the planet).

Non-toxic, eco-friendly bed frames avoid high-emitting composites and harsh finishes; they use responsibly sourced materials and safer coatings; and they’re built by companies that treat people and the environment with respect. In short: what’s good for the planet is generally better for us, too.

Toxins Commonly Found in Conventional Bed Frames

“New furniture smell” often = VOC off-gassing from:

  • Formaldehyde-based adhesives in MDF/particleboard/plywood (a frequent issue in cheap frames and headboards).
  • High-VOC stains, lacquers, and polyurethane finishes that can off-gas for months.
  • Foams and synthetic fabrics in upholstered headboards that may contain flame retardants, PFAS stain guards, or other additives.

Children, chemical-sensitive folks, and anyone prioritizing healthy indoor air should pay special attention here.

The Environmental Footprint

Fast-furniture frames are built to be replaced. Engineered boards, heavy solvent finishes, and mixed materials make repair and recycling difficult—so they head to landfill. By contrast, solid wood (especially reclaimed or FSC-certified), responsibly made steel, and modular designs extend lifespan, reduce waste, and conserve resources.

What To Look For (And Avoid) in a Healthier, Eco-Friendly Bed Frame

These are the exact filters we use when selecting non-toxic, sustainable bed frames and headboards here at Sustainable Jungle.

Materials

Best choices for low-tox, eco-friendly bed frames:

  • FSC-certified solid hardwoods (oak, maple, birch, walnut, cherry): we’d personally always look for solid wood bed frames first. Solid wood is durable, easy to repair or refinish, and stays low-tox when paired with a clean, low-VOC finish – more on finishes below!
  • Reclaimed wood (barnwood, old joists, rubberwood, Douglas fir): we love this option for its character and circularity (keeping good materials out of landfill) but we’d recommend making sure it’s paired with low- or zero-VOC finishes. Older reclaimed pieces can sometimes carry non-clean stains or sealants, so asking the brand how it’s finished is key.
  • Powder-coated steel/iron: we recommend this if you want a minimalist, durable frame. A quality powder coat is typically low-emitting, and the metal itself is endlessly recyclable.
  • Bamboo: a fast-renewing material we’d suggest looking for with credible chain-of-custody certification (like FSC) and, again, paired with low- or zero-VOC finishing.
  • When it comes to textiles on the bed upholstery, we’d suggest organic cotton, or linen as our top choices from a sustainability and safety perspective.

Okay with scrutiny

  • Plywood that is Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Title VI / CARB II compliant (for low formaldehyde) and finished with low- or zero-VOC coatings. We’d personally ask the brand to confirm both the adhesive standard and the finish used.
  • Upholstered frames/headboards using GOLS natural latex or CertiPUR-US® foam, wrapped in GOTS organic cotton or linen. We’d always confirm: no added flame retardants (where legally allowed) and no PFAS stain guards.

Generally avoid

Adhesives, Coatings & Finishes

This guide from the EWG on wood stains and finishes is worth a read if you want to go deeper, but here’s the TL;DR from us:

  • We prefer zero- or low-VOC finishes. That includes hardwax oils (a blend of natural plant oils and waxes that soak into wood rather than sitting on top). They sometimes still use small amounts of solvents, so we’d always check they’re clearly labeled low-VOC.
  • We also like pure linseed oil (made from flaxseed) as another safe option—it’s plant-based, non-toxic once cured, and a classic low-VOC finish. Just watch out for “boiled” linseed oil, which usually has chemical additives to make it dry faster.
  • We’d suggest skipping solvent-heavy stains, mystery “lacquers,” and especially any PFAS “easy-clean” coatings. These can add unnecessary chemical exposure that you’ll breathe in over time.
  • If you’re sensitive or just want full control, one idea we recommend is buying an unfinished solid wood frame and applying your own verified zero-VOC oil or wax at home.
  • For metal frames, powder coating is the way to go—it’s solvent free so virtually no VOCs, lower carbon, and makes the frame both durable and clean to live with.

Hardware & Design Details That Make A Difference

  • Slat spacing & support: If you’re pairing your frame with a foam or latex mattress, many sleep specialists suggest looking for slats that are 3-5″ apart or less. Wider gaps can cause sagging and shorten your mattress lifespan. If you’ve fallen in love with a frame that has wider spacing, you can always add a bunkie board for extra support.
  • Replaceable parts: We really like frames designed with bolts, brackets, and slats you can easily swap out. It makes repairs simple and helps extend the life of the frame, rather than replacing the whole thing if one piece breaks.
  • Squeak-resistant joinery: Nothing ruins a good night’s sleep like a squeaky frame. We’d suggest checking that the bed has solid joinery and proper center support rails (especially for queen, king, or Cal king sizes). It not only keeps things quiet but also boosts durability.
  • Platform vs. bed frame with headboard: Both can be totally fine from a non-toxic perspective. We’d personally focus more on the materials and finishes first, then choose whichever design fits your style and storage needs.

Green Business Practices

Beyond the product, we’re always looking for:

  • Transparent sourcing and ethical manufacturing (safe conditions, fair pay).
  • Local or regional production (lower transport footprint).
  • Repair, replacement-part, and take-back programs; modular builds that can be disassembled and moved.
  • Plastic-light packaging (recycled cardboard, minimal foam).
  • Climate reporting or verified reductions (not just offsets).
  • Charitable giving or some wider community involvement.

Some brands on this list have conducted full brand ratings with us, where we score them across 22 sustainability related criteria. You can find these rated bed frame brands at the top of this list.

Customer Experience & Durability

At the end of the day, a bed frame is only as good as it feels to live with. That’s why we pay close attention to customer reviews—they’re one of the best indicators of whether a frame is sturdy, easy to assemble, and built to last. A truly sustainable bed frame should hold up for years without creaks, wobbles, or constant repairs.

When a brand consistently earns positive feedback on durability and comfort, it gives us more confidence that the frame isn’t just eco-friendly on paper but also practical for everyday life.

Editor’s note: We first published this guide in January 2022, originally focused on eco-friendly bed frames. We’ve since refreshed it to center non-toxic materials and finishes, while keeping a strong sustainability lens, so the brands, certifications, and details reflect the latest information readers care about, including indoor air quality and healthier manufacturing.
