Why Choose Non-Toxic Wallpapers?

First, is vinyl wallpaper toxic?

Conventional vinyl and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) wallpapers, while popular for their durability and affordability, can pose potential health and environmental risks due to the presence of harmful chemicals, such as:

  • Phthalates: Phthalates are plasticizers commonly used to make PVC flexible. These chemicals have been linked to various health issues, including reproductive and developmental problems. Phthalates can leach out of PVC products over time and may contribute to indoor air pollution.
  • Lead: Lead-based pigments may be used in the production of vinyl wallpaper, posing a serious health risk, particularly in homes with young children. Lead exposure is associated with developmental issues and neurological problems.
  • Chlorine: The production and disposal of PVC involve the release of chlorine gas and dioxins, which are highly toxic compounds. Dioxins can persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, posing long-term risks to both human health and ecosystems.

Does Peel-And-Stick Wallpaper Have VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can evaporate into the air and potentially have adverse health effects.

Traditional wallpaper adhesives and materials may contain VOCs, which can contribute to poor indoor air quality and may cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and other health problems.

Common VOCs found in wallpaper include formaldehyde and benzene.

So, is there non-toxic wallpaper?

Well, if you’ve made it this far, you should know the answer is: definitely.

Let’s chat about what that means.

How We Found The Best Eco-Friendly Wallpapers

We’ve already covered why traditional wallpapers are bad for your health, but is wallpaper sustainable?

Considering PVC is a type of plastic that is incredibly difficult to recycle (and thus persists in the environment indefinitely), no—but these brands prove it doesn’t have to be that way.

Just like we’ve been able to swap out PVC in non-toxic yoga mats, many brands are creating wallpaper that not only elevates our space aesthetically but also contributes to a healthier indoor and outdoor atmosphere.

Materials:

What is eco-friendly wallpaper made of?

Our primary focus is on using ethically-sourced and eco-friendly materials that promote a healthier living environment.

The best options are totally biodegradable, like FSC-certified paper, natural fabrics like cork, and other natural materials like sisal grass.

Next, we look for recycled wallpaper. Unfortunately, most of the PET (AKA polyester) options we found were not recycled, but we still considered them because they provide a durable and non-off-gassing alternative to vinyl and PVC.

No matter the material, we seek eco or water-based inks that are VOC-free or low in VOC content.

This goes for any included adhesives as well, but remember, if you’re choosing a traditional unpasted wallpaper, be sure to invest in eco-friendly wallpaper paste so you don’t cancel out your wallpaper’s safety with harmful glues.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Our commitment to ethical and sustainable practices extends to the supply chain and labor practices of the brands we choose.

We actively seek out brands that support artisans with fair wages and prioritize small, local supply chains.

For brands lacking our ideal level of transparency, we always reach out directly in effort to get some more details.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

We prioritize brands that show genuine efforts towards reducing their carbon footprint.

To that end, it can be achieved in many ways, for example, utilizing carbon offset programs, renewable energy, and circular and versatile designs.

Final Thoughts On Safe & Sustainable Wallpaper

In our quest to create aesthetically pleasing spaces, it’s easy to overlook the impact our choices can have on our health and the planet.

By choosing non-toxic wallpaper (peel-and-stick or otherwise), you’re safeguarding the well-being of your loved ones, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals, and promoting a healthier indoor environment.

Moreover, this seemingly small choice has a ripple effect that extends far beyond your walls. It contributes to a greener planet by reducing the demand for toxic manufacturing processes and the disposal of harmful materials.

As with all things sustainable living, when it comes to decorating your space—whether it be with eco-friendly wallpapers or vintage home decor—each little choice matters.

Now, make a statement on something other than your walls by giving this article a share so we can all redecorate in a way that promotes a cleaner, greener home.
