9 Affordable Linen Sheets For More Sustainable Slumber

Amber McDaniel

It’s time to get serious about sustainable sleep, and nothing provides easy, breezy sustainability like linen sheets.

Linen is one of the world’s oldest fabrics—so much so that Egyptian royalty (i.e. mummies) have been taking naps wrapped in linen for thousands of years.

If they deem it fit for the Gods, it’s good enough for us.

Part of what gives linen its longevity is the fact that it requires an intensive manufacturing process, meaning this beautiful lightweight linen often comes with a heavy price tag.

“Where can I find affordable linen sheets?” you ask?

They’re easier to come by than you would assume, and you don’t even need to compromise on quality thanks to these brands who care about people and the planet as much as they care about providing cheap linen bedding.

Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. How We Found The Best Flax Linen Sheets

How can you tell good quality linen sheets and how did we find the absolute best linen sheets?

We referred to our sustainable and ethical fashion criteria, of course!

Materials:

As one of the world’s most sustainable natural fibers on the planet, linen comes from the flax plant, which has a growing cycle of just 100 days and needs very little irrigation fertilizer, or pesticides (AKA harsh chemicals).

So are all linen sheets organic?

Not exactly. While linen is largely grown using organic practices, not all is certified organic. In fact, just 1% of the world’s linen is.

But if you’re comparing bamboo vs. linen sheets or linen sheets vs. cotton, there isn’t a huge sustainability difference between inorganic and organic linen sheets as there is between conventional and organic cotton, or bamboo linen and bamboo viscose.

A quick note on how to wash linen sheets:

Turning down your sheets at night shouldn’t be like folding a cracker, so we’ll tell you how to soften linen sheets (no organic fabric softener needed).

When washing linen sheets, use cold or warm water on a gentle cycle. Opt for natural air drying if possible, but if you use a dryer put it on low heat tumble dry and remove promptly when done to avoid wrinkles.

Never iron as it can weaken the flax fibers!

Supply chain and labor practices:

Affordable linens shouldn’t come at the cost of anyone involved in making them.

Fortunately, because linen grows best in European climates, that’s where it’s often made, too, meaning stricter labor laws. So if you’re seeking fair trade affordable bed sheets, linen is one sustainable fabric you can feel good getting in bed with.

Traceability and transparency are critical to a sustainable brand, and most of these companies explicitly claimed to produce only in sweatshop and child labor-free factories.

Certifications always help avoid possible greenwashing, but keep in mind they’re not a 100% guarantee against it.

Green business practices:

You’ll feel less guilty about hitting the snooze button repeatedly when your slumber is sustainable, which brands can offer through carbon offset programs, recycled materials for shipping, hand-harvesting and manufacturing, and made-to-order production.

Community & charitable giving:

This is what really makes a flat sheet feel amazing: when the brand gives back. Whether through charity donations, contributions to environmental causes, or scholarships, we were happy to see that purchasing the best linen sheets can enrich the lives of others in need.

Final Thoughts On Sustainable Linen Sheets

So is it worth it to get linen sheets?

We sure think so. For hot sleepers and cold sleepers alike, linen is a lovely fabric.

And thanks to these makers of the best affordable linen sheets, it’s more accessible than ever.

Let’s be honest, many of us have been hiding under the covers from some of the environmental and social problems in the bedding industry. But shut-eye feels so much better in something sustainably and ethically produced.

But what is the best type of linen for sheets?

Those you already own. While we encourage you to use what you already have, when you’re in need of some sheets, consider supporting one of these brands that prove that a flat sheet doesn’t need to flatten the planet.

Everyone could use a better sleep these days, so please share with fellow bedheads.

  1. It’d be helpful if the prices were actually included in the article so I don’t have to click on every single company only to find out that the so-called “affordable” sheets cost $120 for a single sheet.
