7 Affordable Linen Sheets For The Most Sustainable Snoozes

It’s time to get serious about sustainable sleep, and there’s hardly anything more sustainable (and comfortable) than a set of linen sheets.

Linen is one of the world’s oldest fabrics. So much so that Egyptian royalty (i.e. mummies) have been taking naps wrapped in linen for thousands of years!

It all starts with a sustainable plant and ends with a long lasting fiber.

Part of what gives linen its longevity is the fact that it requires an intensive manufacturing process, which means lightweight linen often comes with a heavy price tag.

Affordable linen sheets may sound the stuff of dreams but they’re easier to come by than you would assume.

Better yet, you don’t even need to compromise on quality thanks to these brands who care about people and the planet as much as they care about providing quality, budget-friendly linen sheets.

To give you a sustainable cheat sheet, picture a night without tossing and turning in Coyuchi’s organic linen sheets, SOL Organics’ sustainably-sourced OEKO-TEX-certified European linen sheets, or MagicLinen’s soft stone-washed sheets which are, well, slumber magic.

How did we find these affordable linen sheet brands that won’t break the bank or our planet?

We referred to our handy sustainable and ethical fashion guide, of course. Head to the end of the article for a summary on what that is.

About Coyuchi

It’s not surprising that organic bedding provider Coyuchi hails from California, with all its natural beauty.

Many progressive brands come from the land of plant milk and responsibly sourced honey.

In addition to non-toxic shower curtains, eco friendly towels, ethical sleepwear, sustainable robes, and other bedding essentials, Coyuchi also has some affordable heavy linen bed sheets that will make you proud to make your bed.

Getting cozy in Coyuchi’s organic linen sheets is like correctly putting on the fitted sheet—the first time. They offer a range of natural colors available in both their Organic Relaxed Linen Minimalist Set and individually sold sheets.

Coyuchi’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Made out of 100% organic linen, the classic chambray style is woven to a sturdy 185 gsm weight which is designed to become softer and more durable over time. Coyuchi’s linen sheets combine optimal comfort with linen’s ability to naturally insulate.

Coyuchi’s linen is both GOTS certified organic and MADE SAFE certified free of toxic chemicals.

They also only use low-impact dyes, perfect for the planet and sensitive skin.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Coyuchi’s organic linen is grown in France, by farmers who incorporate into a healthy rotation of organic crops with their flax like winter oats, alfalfa, fava beans, and wheat.

Then the linen is woven in Portugal, in a factory that abides by fair trade standards. Coyuchi has several relevant certifications.

Green business practices:

Through their 2nd Home Take Back program, old Coyuchi linens may be returned for recycling into new products. Customers get a prepaid shipping label and receive a discount on their next order.

Through this program, more than 19,000 pounds of textile waste have been diverted from landfills.

No wonder they’re a member of Textile Exchange, a nonprofit dedicated to a positive impact on the climate.

Community & charitable giving:

Coyuchi is a member of 1% for the Planet, with their contributions going to regenerative fiber partner, Fibershed.

About Sol Organics

SOL Organics’ mission is to create textiles with integrity.

And it’s for that reason why they’re one of our favorite sustainable bedding brands. Here’s a little sneak peak into their ethos, from the mouth of the co-founder himself:

“Affordability is the tipping point. It promotes access, which in turn creates demand and conversion to organic cotton. It creates a symbiosis in which everyone wins: the farmer, the consumer, and the earth.”

If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep that’s also good for our planet, you’ll love SOL’s range of sustainable, organic, fair, and transparent down comforters, duvets, organic cotton pillows, and bedding sets.

Designed for minimalists, SOL offers a sole affordable linen sheet set. It’s available in sizes twin XL-Cal King and in either blushing pink or bright white.

Sol Organics’ Ethical and Sustainability Practices

SOL uses 100% OEKO-TEX-certified European linen that’s naturally moisture-wicking, hypoallergenic, and stone-washed for softness. They feature a 170 GSM weave, providing the perfect sheets for staying both warm and cool.

Supply chain & labor practices:

All of SOL’s partner factories have met non-negotiable requirements, like third-party certification. They only work with factories that are certified by either FLO, GOTS, OEKO TEX, Fair Trade, or a combination.

It wasn’t enough to just see these factories on paper, once SOL decided on a factory they visited it themselves ensuring fair wages. SOL’s manufacturing partners steer clear of any child labor.

Green business practices:

Organic and sustainable fabrics form the pillar of SOL’s sustainability. Aside from linen, organic cotton makes up many of their products, which means a reduced requirement for water and a smaller carbon footprint.

Community & charitable giving:

For every sheet purchase, SOL donates $7.50 to your choice of these charities: Anti Racism Fund, Water4, The Fund for Animals, or Children’s Defense Fund.

Rawganique is the only eco-friendly brand we know of that was started by a couple of off-grid homesteaders.

They like to call themselves “the unicorn of clothing” and are committed to making organic cotton, linen, and hemp products in a sweatshop-free and plastic-free way.

For over two decades, Rawganique has been impressing a global customer base with towels, bedding, shoes, craft supplies, sustainable winter gloves, sustainable rugs, eco friendly slippers and more.

In fact, they have some of the best affordable linen sheets for those who love a minimalist look (available in all sizes).

Rawganique’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Their lush Parisian natural linen sheets are made from organically-grown French flax linen. They’re free of dioxin, formaldehyde, and fire retardants, and are both unbleached and undyed.

Like all other products, the sheets are non-toxic.

Supply chain & labor practices:

All Rawganique fibers (either linen, hemp, or organic cotton) grow in Europe, which is where most of their sweatshop-free manufacturing takes place, too (a few USA-made items being the exception).

How did we find the best linen sheets for your wallet?

Well, when it comes to the best we mean best for you and best for the planet, which is why we referred to our sustainable and ethical fashion criterion.

If you’re a first time reader, we’ll give you the sleepy summary:

Ticking this top priority box on this category was super simple—all of these sheets are made with either sustainably-sourced or certified organic linen (AKA flax).

As one of the world’s most sustainable natural fibers on the planet, linen makes for more than just an optimally comfortable sheet set. It is a biodegradable material that has a growing cycle of just 100 days and needs very little irrigation and fertilizer.

Still, linen isn’t perfect and whether it gets an A or a C on the Sustainable Jungle School report card depends on whether it’s grown organically or not. Linen thrives without pesticides and fertilizers, but that doesn’t mean people don’t still use them.

Beyond that, some brands still extract flax fibers using a chemical retting process.

Unfortunately, just 1% of the world’s linen supply is organic.

That’s why we looked for brands either certified organic or at least OEKO-TEX (or equivalent) certified because this means no toxic chemicals may remain in the final product.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Buying affordable linen sheets—or any sheets for that matter—can come with concerning ethical and environmental costs.

For this reason, we were happy to see low price tags and high degrees of traceability and transparency with these ethical bedding companies.

Most brands explicitly claimed their linen sheets were produced in sweatshop and child labor-free factories. Some even had certifications to back them up (which is especially good because, without them, there’s always some risk of greenwashing).

Green business practices:

You’ll feel less guilty about hitting the snooze button repeatedly when your slumber is sustainable. These brands are going above and beyond by not only using sustainably-sourced materials, but also doing things like offering carbon offset shipping and manufacturing, hand-harvesting their linen, and using eco-friendly packaging.

Community & charitable giving:

This is what really makes a set of linen sheets feel amazing—when the brand gives back. Whether through charity donations, contributions to environmental causes, or scholarships, we were happy to see that purchasing affordable linen sheets can enrich the lives of others in need.

Turn down for what? Affordable linen sheets—that’s what!

Let’s be honest, many of us have been hiding under the covers from some of the environmental and social problems in the bedding industry. But shut-eye feels so much better in a set of sustainably and ethically produced sheets.

And even more so if they’re budget friendly.

These brands go to show that sustainable linen doesn’t have to break the (socially responsible) bank (or the planet). So next time you’re in need of some sheets, consider supporting one of these brands that are changing the textile industry from the inside.

Thank you for taking the time read this, and please do share it with the bedheads in your life. Now, drop your linen brand recommendation in the comments below.

  1. It’d be helpful if the prices were actually included in the article so I don’t have to click on every single company only to find out that the so-called “affordable” sheets cost $120 for a single sheet.
