7 Non-Toxic Furniture Brands Creating Healthy Home Furnishings

Heather Seely

The smell of that new dining room table, wafting through your lounge. Who doesn’t love ‘new furniture smell’?

But is that smell a sign of something more sinister you’ve brought into your home?

According to the EPA, building materials and furnishings are one of the major causes of indoor air pollution—which is why non-toxic furniture is a thing; and a much safer way to spruce up your home.

Before replacing your furniture though, let’s pause for a sec and consider how we navigate this.

Finding sustainable furniture is one thing, but how can you tell if furniture is non-toxic?

Some of the elements you need to look for if you want toxin-free furniture include no flame retardants, formaldehyde, stain guards, toxic water repellents, PVC/vinyl, off-gassing polyurethane foam, toxic paint, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Ideally this will be backed up with non-toxic furniture certifications, but in case it’s not, we’ve prepared this shopping guide for furniture without chemicals, so you can enjoy a healthier and happier home.

For starters, here are some of our fave brands creating healthy furniture over mass-produced, landfill-bound furniture that leaches toxic chemicals into your home, and then the environment.

Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. About TFS Natural Home By The Futon Shop

Price range: $280–$7,990

If you’re wondering where to buy non-toxic furniture, you’ll find a range of other natural items, The Futon’s Shop Natural Home collection is a safe place to start.

As you might guess, their range includes some of the most natural futons, but this formaldehyde-free furniture brand is more than just a one-hit-wonder.

You’ll also find mattresses, side and coffee tables, non-toxic sectionals and couches, and platform bed frames.

Their range of chemical-free Amish futon frames is worthy of being their namesake, like the perfectly minimalist Cornerstone Futon that contains only sustainable materials and features you need—and nothing you don’t.

The TFS Natural Home’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

USDA organic cotton and GOLS-certified organic latex makes up Natural Home’s futon cushions and mattresses, along with select GOTS-certified organic wool, OEKO-TEX-certified coconut or hemp coir, and cashmere, horsetail, and camel hair.

While all bearing OEKO-TEX certification, we’re not certain about ethical sourcing of these latter three materials, so we recommend avoiding until we confirm with TFS directly.

100% FFC HARD pine is used for the futon and eco-friendly bed frames, and no glue and no finish ensure you’re purchasing furniture without formaldehyde or toxic chemicals.

Supply Chain & labor practices

A farm-to-furniture manufacturer, non-toxic materials are mostly harvested locally, instead of traveling thousands of miles.

Their handmade VOC-free furniture has been crafted in a San Francisco factory since the 70s.

Carbon commitments & green practices

US material sourcing and domestic manufacturing mean transportation emissions are kept to a minimum.

Each product has a 20–30 year life expectancy.

Community & charitable giving

TFS loves face masks as much as they love futons. A percentage of all their face mask sales are donated to homeless shelters, Native Americans, and Bangladesh Awaj foundation workers.

They’re also a member of 1% for the Planet.

About Medley

Price range: $995–$6,438

Brothers Travis and Ryan got into the furniture business by aptly selling furniture from their living room.

Their focus with Medley is to push the furniture industry forward.

They’ve now outgrown their living room, but they still offer a whole medley of affordable chemical-free furniture for yours, including sofas, sectionals, accent chairs, storage, dining room furniture, beds, and more.

Everything features clean lines, simple functionality, and minimalist vibes—perfectly embodied by the solid wood Palder Extendable non-toxic dining table, whose simple extending tech seats anywhere from 4 to 8 people.

Medley’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Medley offers kiln-dried alder solid wood furniture frames and solid walnut and maple for tables and other hard goods. Component parts of storage pieces are crafted with FSC-certified, low-VOC CARB 2-compliant plywood.

Two kinds of cushions are used: CertiPUR-US®-certified foam and natural Dunlop latex, both of which meet updated emissions and durability standards without added flame retardants and formaldehyde.

The latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and is naturally mold-resistant, and antimicrobial.

Natural fibers used are Greenguard Gold, GOTS, and or OEKO-TEX certified, such as their OEKO-TEX wool that’s free of APEO, NPEO, pesticides, carcinogenic colorants, and heavy metals.

Synthetic fibers are used in some pieces, several of which incorporate plant-based water repellents. All are certified free of harmful chemicals.

They use plant-based finishes, like non-toxic furniture polish made of natural beeswax, carnauba wax, and olive oil. It’s odorless, zero VOC, and water- and heat-resistant.

Supply Chain & labor practices

All furnishings available are built in the US and made especially for individual customers when they place an order.

Carbon commitments & green practices

As one of the best non-toxic furniture brands, Medley’s underlying concern is to make healthy furniture that lasts.

They also want to give back to nature what they take for its furniture pieces. For every single tree used, they plant three with the National Forest Foundation.

This formaldehyde-free furniture brand is so confident in their non-toxic bedroom furniture that they encourage customers to read the legal tags

Supply Chain & labor practices

The next goal is a Zero Waste to Landfill certification.

In addition to donating 2% of revenue to organizations like EcoHealth Alliance and Re:wild

If you want to create an industrial-chic dining room, bar, or office, there’s an extensive pick of reclaimed wood desks, console tables, and dining tables. You can accompany any of these with their unique non-toxic dining chairs that take the form of benches and industrial bar stools.

Urban Wood Goods Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Every sustainable coffee table, bench, and beyond features a range of rare, reclaimed woods that were originally harvested in the late 1800s and early 1900s. You can see their history ingrained in the cracks, knots, and tight wood grain.

Urban Wood Goods keeps these irreplaceable woods in circulation, reducing the number of trees cut down for furniture production.

This wood is combined with American-made steel structures and salvaged metal pipe accents.

You don’t have to worry about formaldehyde from furniture by Urban Wood Goods. Only eco-friendly, water-based, low-to-zero VOC finishes and stains are used. A dual-care topcoat provides a formaldehyde-free, commercial-grade UV finish.

Supply Chain & labor practices

The reclaimed wood used comes from urban Midwest sites within 100 miles of the brand’s workshop.

Working out of the company’s Chicago woodshop is a team of 20 craftspeople, making each product “Grown in America & Built in America…for you”

Carbon commitments & green practices

Shipping costs and emissions are kept to a minimum by only shipping to customers looking for non-toxic furniture in Canada and the US.

About Burrow

Price range: $195–$7,090

Burrow is a non-toxic furniture brand with a focus on setting new standards in terms of providing a modular platform, providing function and fashion, and investing in community and experience.

It’s managed to separate luxury sofas into modules, which allow customers to expand their furniture to suit changing needs. Simply add a sea to a loveseat to make a sofa. Or add shelving units that let your furniture grow with you.

Other exciting additions include built-in chargers and multipurpose trays.

Sofas aside, Burrow offers a complete range of bedroom furniture (bed frames, dressers, nightstands), shelving units, coffee and end tables, and outdoor furniture.

Burrow’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Burrow might use steel hardware and Baltic Birch frames, but the brand’s sofas feature a choice of wooden legs sourced from responsibly managed US forests or recyclable plated steel legs.

Other non-toxic furniture contains sustainably-sourced solid hardwoods and veneered plywood.

In the upholstery department, bon-toxic materials used include eco-leather, velvet, contract-grade polyester, and upcycled olefin.

Olefin is polypropylene, but its sustainability credentials are upgraded because it’s created from upcycled polymers. The processing uses no PFCs or chemical additives.

CertiPUR-US certified foam cushions add comfort and are made with no ozone depleters, heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, or flame retardants. There are minimal VOCs.

Supply Chain & labor practices

Burrow furniture is made either domestically in a workshop in North Carolina, or by one of their partners in Poland, Vietnam, India, and Mexico.

Wood is sourced from suppliers bearing sustainable forestry certifications by the American Tree Farm System, Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

To keep their flame retardant-free furniture affordable, everything is sold directly to customers, with no retail middlemen.

Carbon commitments & green practices

Burrow’s commitment to durability and versatility means quality, modular pieces you can upgrade to suit your lifestyle or home as it changes over the years. The most eco-friendly choice in furniture is something that lasts, after all.

Why Choose Certified Non-Toxic Furniture?

When we’re relaxing at home (including in the backyard on some outdoor furniture), there’s nothing to warn us of the dangers lurking in our furniture.

Conventional furniture finishes (paints, stains, and polishes), adhesives, and fabrics are treated with a host of toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) lead to furniture off-gassing. This in turn causes indoor air pollution, which the EPA considers worse than outdoor pollution.

These carcinogens, heavy metals, and neurotoxins are doing untold damage to human health—hence the need to look for low-VOC or no-VOC furniture.

Formaldehyde from furniture is especially concerning, as it can lead to organic toxicity, reproductive problems, and cancer.

We also want furniture without fire retardants, as have been linked to disruption of the endocrine, thyroid, immune, and reproductive systems.

How We Found The Best Non-Toxic Furniture

After reading all that, you might be wondering, is all wood furniture toxic?

Fortunately, no; you just need to know what to look for in between the couch cushions.

Looking for the best non-toxic furniture can be a challenge—especially since “non-toxic” is a broad, unregulated term.

But as with most home guides, from non-toxic cribs to non-toxic rugs, we used our trusty sustainable and ethical fashion guide to steer us toward safe, healthy furniture for everyone involved.

Materials:

Wooden furniture is always our first choice, because it’s natural and durable. However, the wood should come from responsibly managed forests (like FSC-certified wood).

If it’s reclaimed, that’s better yet because it means no new trees are cut down.

Things get more complicated when talking about foam cushions and upholstered furniture, but as with sustainable clothing brands, we look for natural and organic materials (organic cotton, hemp fabric, organic natural latex) followed by recycled synthetic fabrics.

Seeking non-toxic furniture materials from the likes of non-toxic desks for example, means these also need to be free of flame retardants, formaldehyde, and heavy metals with low-VOC emissions.

This generally means looking for solid wood instead of composite woods (like plywood), which often utilize off gassing glues and toxic chemicals to bind the layers together.

Supply chain and labor practices

The furniture producers mostly make their products in the US, which generally has higher labor and wage standards.

But because US manufacturing is no 100% guarantee for ethics (especially given varying state minimum wages) we still like to see transparency and manufacturing certifications.

Carbon commitments & green practices

Handcrafted furniture production methods use less energy and lower emissions. Custom-made is even better because pieces are made to order, lowering levels of deadstock and waste.

Beyond that, more ways to reduce carbon emissions include localized sourcing and manufacturing, carbon offset programs, and use of clean energy.

Community & charitable endeavors:

A big thumbs up to all the companies large enough to give something back. It’s even better when they go above and beyond to support communities across the other side of the world or give back to environmental organizations.

Final Thoughts On Toxic-Free Furniture

Think about it: you’re lying on your back in your new non-toxic recliner, taking deep inhalations, worry-free.

If you’re setting up your first home or looking to replace that flat-pack furniture that’s seen better days, investing in non-toxic furniture is worth considering.

Besides you’re own health (and your family’s), the environment will also breath a sigh of relief.

And with these non-toxic furniture brands, you’ll have no issues filling your home with healthy alternatives that will last many years to come.

If you know anyone else who’s looking to upgrade the (air) quality of their home, please share this list with them.
