5 Eco Friendly Water Bottles Keeping Our Planet an H2O-asis

*This post contains affilate links

Staying hydrated is essential; using single-use plastics is not.

Producing a plastic bottle of water requires six times as much water during manufacturing as what ends up in the bottle itself.

Whereas using an eco friendly water bottle is one of the most impactful zero waste swaps you can make… and the effort of doing so is minimal. But if you need further justification on making the switch to a sustainable water bottle, skip to the bottom of the article.

We’ll also filter out our reasons for choosing these brands.

Any brand that steers us from single-use plastic is inherently better than most but there are some eco friendly water bottle brands that go above and beyond to keep us and our planet happy, hydrated, and healthy. They also make epic zero waste gifts for your mindful loved ones.

Before you get too thirsty, let’s check out some of these eco friendly water bottles.

About S’well

Sarah Kauss had a lofty goal—to stop our dependence on single-use plastic bottles.

She set out to create the first “reusable hydration accessory,” which, at the time of S’well’s inception, was pretty revolutionary because “sustainable” certainly wasn’t “stylish” or vice-versa (yet she was able to accomplish both).

Swell’s iconic 17-ounce bottle came first. Clever industrial design meant the bottle could keep things cold for 36 hours and hot for 18.

Now, the Original Bottle is 25-ounces and keeps things cold and hot for 48 hours and 24 hours, respectively. Kids can sip sustainably, too, thanks to their kid-friendly S’ip Bottles.

They also have Travelers, Roamers, and a range of other bottles to quench any type of thirst (even if it’s just thirst from the dehydrating magic we call coffee).

S’well’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Triple-layered, vacuum-insulated, high-grade 18/8 food-grade stainless steel is the material of choice for S’well and their sustainable water bottles. Stainless steel is eco friendly since it’s very durable and fully recyclable and doesn’t contain BPA or BPS.

Therma-S’well insulation technology keeps drinks hotter or colder, for longer, and keeps the outside of the bottle from sweating.

Supply chain & labor practices:

All S’well products are thoughtfully designed in NYC before they’re manufactured in a responsible manner in China.

As S’well is a Certified B Corp, annual audits for strict environmental and social standards stand as evidence that the “responsible manufacturing” is, in fact, responsible.

Green business practices:

With a continuing goal to become more environmentally friendly, S’well launched their S’ip line with minimal cardboard packaging.

For everything else, minimal packaging is used that includes responsibly-harvested paper.

Community & charitable giving:

S’well proudly partners with UNICEF and, in three years has provided more than $1.4 million in safe and clean drinking water to vulnerable communities around the globe.

S’well is currently focused on Madagascar, where nearly 50% of people lack access to clean drinking water.

About Klean Kanteen

Klean Kanteen is co-owned by brother and sister, Michelle Kalberer and Jeff Cresswell. They started this first-of-its-kind company back when finding a reusable stainless steel water bottle in the US was impossible (everything was plastic).

According to them: “Klean Kanteens have been built with love—the love of adventure, the love of conserving wild places and the love of replacing single-use plastic.”

While they remain a family and employee-owned company, they have become an international name and have inspired other companies to make reusable products with stainless steel.

You know what they say: First thought, best thought. Klean Kanteen exemplifies that notion with some of the best eco friendly water bottles available.

Lightweight in design but not skimping on variety, they all come in a range of sizes, widths, and colors. You can also upgrade with different add-ons like steel straws, interchangeable caps, and other accessories.

Klean Kanteen’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

The Insulated Classic can keep hot things hot for 20 hours and iced things cold for 50 hours. It uses a Climate Lock double-wall vacuum insulation and 18/8 BPA-free stainless steel that has been electropolished in a safe and non-toxic process.

The regular Classic is made with the same materials but isn’t as insulative as the Insulated Classic

Klean Kanteen also revolutionized the eco friendly reusable water bottles game with their Klean Coat® chip-resistant, powder coat finish, which is safe for people and the planet according to the GreenScreen For Safer Chemicals.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Klean Kanteen has a commitment to support their diverse, global team. They provide a range of programs and benefits: employee ownership and profit-sharing, training and development opportunities, wellness programs, 100% health coverage, 401k contributions, paid parental leave, and even a dog friendly office!

With their partner factories around the globe, they adhere to ILO standards for safety, fair wages, ethical business practices, and environmental responsibility. They have a strict Code of Conduct and meet ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949 standards.

These are just a few reasons why they’re a Certified B Corporation

Green business practices:

This brand is Klean on the climate and for the past decade, they’ve been taking action to reduce their footprint.

After evaluating the sources of their emissions (i.e. raw materials, manufacturing, employee commuting), they began making improvements. For example, installing solar panels at their HQ—which now supplies 100% of the building’s electricity.

Klean purchases carbon offsets and renewable energy credits for their manufacturing and delivery emissions, making them a Carbon Neutral certified business.

They’re also a member of the We Are Still In commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.

Community & charitable giving:

Klean Kanteen’s HQ is in Chico, CA and they regularly support their community by donating to local schools and organizations. They also give their staff 24 hours of paid volunteer time that can be used to support a range of diverse non-profits in their community.

Klean is also a member of 1% For the Planet

About Hydro Flask

Hydro Flask wants to be with us every step, sip, and smile—and they want to do so sustainably.

For this brand, outdoors is everything.

Nestled into the Pacific Northwest wonderland, the Bend, Oregon-based brand draws its inspiration from Mother Nature. Everything they produce is designed to last the most rugged mountain adventures while encouraging folks to #RefillForGood

AKA: replace single-use plastic water bottles for good.

“Drink in the adventure” with Hydro Flask’s eco friendly sports water bottles.

They come in a few different widths, designs, lid styles, and oh-so-many different colors (including specialty limited-run designs like their past homage to US National Parks).

From eco friendly water bottles for kids to can cozies and gallon-sized growlers for adults, they truly have a plastic-free water bottle for any liquid.

Hydro Flask even makes lighter-weight versions for hiking.

Hydro Flask’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

These reusable water bottles are made from pro-grade 18/8 stainless steel that comes with a proprietary powder coat for added durability and an easy no-slip grip. They are insulated using TempShield™ power, which keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours.

All of the bottles are free of BPA and phthalates and also come with a lifetime warranty.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Hydro Flask is the name in sustainable stainless steel water bottles, but they currently don’t appear to address manufacturing and material sourcing on their website, so we will reach out directly to ask.

Green business practices:

All bottles come with a lifetime warranty, but we don’t need that to know how durable these bottles are. Short from being run over by a truck, they’re practically indestructible. We personally own one of their coffee sized bottles and it still looks virtually new after years of been thrown around.

Community & charitable giving:

Hydro Flask takes an active role in protecting the outdoors. They launched a charitable program called Parks For All that is designed to create and support green spaces to bring about happier and healthier lives for all. For example, a portion of the limited-run National Park bottles went toward this program.

They’ve donated more than $1.5 million (and thousands of water bottles) to 92 nonprofits that are protecting the great outdoors.

Hydro Flask also partners with the World Surf League as the official water bottle of the championship tour.

Tree Tribe’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Durable 18/10 stainless steel comprises the outer shell, while 18/8 food-grade stainless steel lines the inside of the bottle. Because of a double-wall vacuum-sealed design, hot liquids can stay hot for at least six hours (and warm for up to 12 hours).

The bottles are free of BPA and topped off with a metal and bamboo lid that’s an airtight food-grade silicone gasket—which means they will never leak.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Tree Tribe has no information about their manufacturing on their website so we will be reaching out and updating this article upon reply.

Green business practices:

The bottles come packaged in a brown Kraft paper box to be composted.

Community & charitable giving:

For every purchase, Tree Tribe plants a tree (surprising, we know). They’re on a mission to plant millions of trees all around the world, but so far they’ve planted more than 400,000 trees in 12 different countries.

They prioritize forest gardens to support the local community by providing them with food and other resources.

Check out their tree map to see where they’ve planted, as well as who they partner with to make it happen.

About Origin

It’s important to stay hydrated, yet many of us don’t consume our minimum daily required dose.

But what happens when you combine eco friendly glass bottles with the knowledge that your sipping will fund sustainable poverty alleviation programs around the world and provide clean drinking water to those without?

Suddenly, we’re the most hydrated we’ve ever been…Now, there’s a reason to gulp down some H2O.

Origin makes this happen. Aware that access to clean water can reduce preventable disease and mortality rates, they donate 2% of their revenue to solutions that support those living in extreme poverty.

Sip your way to social justice with Origin’s eco friendly glass bottles. They have a wide and narrow option, a fruit/tea infuser bottle, and a few kid bottles—all of which come in different designs/colors.

Origin’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

All bottles are made with medical-grade borosilicate glass (think: Pyrex) that don’t expand or contract too much in extreme temperatures. I.e. no cracking.

They’re free of BPA, BPS, lead, cadmium, and PVC. Unlike metal, you won’t have the issue of bacteria growth or rust.

They also come wrapped in a food-grade silicone sleeve that provides impact protection when the extra grip isn’t enough to stave off the occasional drop that’s certain to happen.

Even the leak-proof bamboo lid is equipped with a food-grade silicone ring to prevent chemical leach into your water.

Supply chain & labor practices:

No supply chain information is available for this brand.  Their FAQ section is currently blank so we hope that by inquiring directly, they’ll be inspired to publically answer the question via that page. Either way, we’ll keep you all updated.

Community & charitable giving:

With the donated funds, Origin takes a three-pronged approach to giving, focusing on education, health, and water.

Not only do they provide the resources to support access to clean water, but they also provide education to improve literacy rates, and empower women and children with access to health and hygiene solutions.

They do this through partnerships with several different organizations that are rooted in sustainable development. They also directly collaborate with members of the local community to identify where they can be most supportive.

One such partnership is with Empower Playgrounds, which builds merry-go-rounds that generate electricity during play at primary schools in rural Ghana villages. The electricity charges battery-powered lanterns which the students take home and use to study and read.

We’re pretty sure the answer to that is a big “DUH”, but just so we’re all on the same page on how prolific the plastic problem is, here are (a few) facts.

A single-use PET plastic bottle takes 700 years to start breaking down—and when it does, it releases microplastics into our environment.

There’s also the fact that 1.5 million barrels of oil are required to produce the plastic needed for our single-use bottles (and this is for American consumers only).

Considering the fact that 90% of the cost of a plastic water bottle is for the plastic itself, it doesn’t even make sense from a financial standpoint—and certainly makes spending a one-time $20-$40 on a reusable bottle much more reasonable.

In the US alone, each of us goes through about 315 plastic bottles every.single.year. Even if you cut that consumption in half by occasionally remembering to bring your eco friendly reusable water bottle with you, that could still have a hugely positive impact.

How did we decide what eco friendly water bottle brands were truly putting their money where their mouth is (so we can do the same)?

We used the same criteria we do when it comes to sustainable fashion.

After all, if we’re going to be drinking out of something every day for years to come, we want to be sure it’s made with the best materials, produced in an ethical way, and supports a healthier environment and happier people.

The best water bottle materials to drink from are most importantly non-toxic. BPA free was a non-negotiable here.

For this list, that meant either glass or eco friendly metal water bottles made from food-grade stainless steel.

Food grade silicone bottles would be an option here, as well, though we didn’t find any suitable silicone brands just yet, outside those using silicone sleeves for extra grip.

While there weren’t any on this list, we would also consider aluminum to be a good choice. However, when looking for eco friendly aluminum water bottles, make sure you find one that is BPA-free (because plastics aren’t the only material that carries them).

While there are some brands out there using recycled plastic to make reusable water bottles, we still prefer to avoid plastic altogether if possible.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Unlike with sustainable jewelry or ethical fashion, a traceable and transparent supply chain doesn’t seem to be front of mind for eco-friendly water bottle brands, yet.

Most brands haven’t satisfied our thirst when it comes to letting us know about their supply chain and labor practices, but we were happy to see that some brands are working with a strict code of conduct or are certified by the ILO to have ethical and sustainable supply chain practices.

For all brands on the list, we’ll be reaching out to learn more about their manufacturing and to confirm they uphold a suitable Code of Conduct to protect workers’ rights.

Green business practices:

Again, beyond choosing sustainable materials and helping us minimize our personal consumption of single-use plastics, there’s some room for improvement when it comes to having any additional green business practices.

Understandably, a couple of these brands are too small to implement meaningful changes, but we were happy to see the larger ones offsetting their carbon emissions, using recyclable packaging, planting trees, or using renewable energy.

The best were those offering lifetime warranties and adding extra touches (like a protective powder coat) to increase the durability of their bottles.

Community & charitable giving:

This is where staying hydrated can make a positive impact outside personal health and wellness.

We were thrilled to see many of these brands giving back in a variety of ways. Whether it’s planting trees around the globe, giving their staff members paid volunteer days, or providing people in need with access to clean drinking water, it’s great to know we can quench our literal thirst and thirst for social change at the same time.

What are you waiting for? Grab your sustainable backpack and your eco friendly water bottle and enjoy the adventure!

You know how bad single-use water bottles are for our planet, so let’s support the brands who are offering us a sustainable solution.

That said, the most eco friendly water bottle is the one you already own, so only buy new if you need to. And remember to ask (in every situation), “Do I have my water bottle?” Have you ever seen the lost-and-found in a gym? It’s basically a water bottle graveyard!
