9 Plastic-Free Water Bottles For The Best Non-Toxic Hydration

The SJ Team

Would you rather quench your thirst with a plastic-free water bottle you can use over and over or a single-use plastic bottle?

For drinking water, coffee, or whatever your beverage of choice is, choose plastic-free water bottles.

Plastic-free bottles are not only free of, well…plastic, but also chemicals that can leach into our drinking water.

Plus, buying bottled water can be 2,000 times more expensive than drinking purified tap water from a reusable water bottle—not to mention all those plastic bottles add up in landfills.

Non-plastic water bottles are a planet and budget friendly essential, and that’s all the motivation we need to support these H2Outstanding brands.

Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. About Origin

Price Range: $15–$26

Origin will elevate your hydration game with their socially and ecologically friendly range of plastic-free glass water bottle offerings.

Say goodbye to the search for the best non-plastic wide mouth water bottle. Whether you prefer a narrow mouth, wide mouth, or a spill-proof sippy mouth on their plastic-free toddler water bottles, Origin has options.

Fruit and tea infusers are also available if you want to spice up that plain ol’ H2O.

In fact, the Tritan fruit infuser water bottle comes with a bottle brush to keep it clean and fresh as the fruit going inside.

Origin’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

If you’re worried about breaking a glass bottle, these are made from medical-grade borosilicate glass. The same material in Pyrex, it won’t grow bacteria, crack in extreme heat and cold, or shatter with minor drops.

But if you have butter-fingers, the grippy, removable silicone sleeve will prevent this.

The lids are made from bamboo and have a leak-proof, food-grade silicone ring, making these plastic-free water bottles free of lead, PVC, cadmium, BPS, and BPA.

Supply chain & labor practices:

We have reached out to inquire about their manufacturing, but haven’t received a reply.

Community & charitable giving:

Each sip is sustainable and socially empowering because 2% of all Origin revenue goes towards supporting organizations aiding those living in poverty.

One such organization is Ghana’s Empower Playgrounds. Together, they drilled water boreholes at a primary school and equipped it with a merry-go-round that generates electricity.

How We Found The Best Non-Toxic Water Bottles

Chemical contamination may lead you to be asking: how do I know if my plastic water bottle is BPA free?

Even though legal regulations now ensure the types of plastic used in most plastic bottles are BPA-free, that doesn’t mean they’re totally safe for you.

When heated, they may still leach carcinogenic materials and, if reused, can breed harmful bacteria in your water—plus they’re terrible for the environment.

While there is such a thing as non-plastic bottled water, the most planet-friendly option is to refill your own non-toxic water bottle.

Materials:

What are non-plastic water bottles made of?

Well, not plastic, that’s for sure.

Plastic-free metal water bottles appear to be the most common, often made out of high quality, food grade 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel.

What do the numbers mean?

It refers to the composition of the metal, 18/8 being 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Nickel contributes to the durability of the stainless steel, so 18/10 will be a little stronger.

Regardless of type, stainless steel is durable and infinitely recyclable.

As such, recycled stainless steel is the most sustainable material for non-plastic water bottles.

Medical-grade borosilicate glass is another good alternative. Like Pyrex, it’s a stronger form of glass that’s resistant to extreme temperature changes and falls.

100% plastic-free water bottles utilized materials like bamboo and food-grade silicone for lids and grips, but a few still opted to use BPA-free plastic lids.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Most water bottles without plastic may not be transparent, but we like to see brands that are—and that means zero greenwashing.

Across the board, there’s room for improvement here, but it’s comforting to see mention of visits to manufacturing partners and third-party audits to ensure ethical working conditions.

Green business practices:

In addition to curbing single-use plastic bottle usage, good brands use plastic-free packaging, offer replacement parts, and back products with lifetime warranties.

Some were climate neutral courtesy of carbon offset programs.

Community & charitable giving:

Many brands donate their plastic-free water bottles, time, and funds to support environmental and social projects—including providing clean drinking water to those who need it.

Final Thoughts On The Best Plastic-Free Reusable Water Bottles

Are you excited to see all these brands turning to the bottle—the plastic-free bottle, that is!

Non-plastic water bottles are cleaner, greener, and more convenient. Other bottles just can’t compare (plus, water in non-plastic bottles just tastes better).

So let’s raise a glass, because reducing the literal mountain of plastic bottle pollution (to the tune of 55 million bottles PER HOUR!) is something we can all cheers to.

Just don’t forget to invite your friends to that toxic-free water bottle toast by sharing this article with them.

  1. Ridiculous to recommend bottles using plastic lids as “100% plastic free bottles”. Like, that’s not what anyone wants when looking for “non plastic”. Why aren’t drinking spouts ever made of steel or wood???
