Would you rather quench your thirst with a plastic free water bottle or a single-use bottle?

If you’re reading this, then that’s probably a rhetorical question.

Non plastic water bottles are a planet and budget friendly essential. And that’s all the motivation we need to support these H2Outstanding brands.

If you want to know more, head to the end of the article to see how we filtered through the options.

HOW WE FOUND THESE PLASTIC FREE WATER BOTTLES

Even though legal regulations now ensure the types of plastic used in most plastic water bottles are BPA-free, that doesn’t mean they’re totally safe for you.

When heated, they may still leach carcinogenic materials and, if reused, can breed harmful bacteria in your water.

Did we mention they’re also terrible for the environment in more ways than one?

For the greenest bottles, we considered the following:

Materials:

Plastic free metal water bottles appear to be the most common, often made out of high quality, food grade 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel.

What do the numbers mean?

It refers to the composition of the metal, 18/8 being 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Nickel contributes to the durability of the stainless steel, so 18/10 will be a little stronger.

Regardless of type, stainless steel is durable and infinitely recyclable.

That said, recycled stainless steel is the most sustainable material for non plastic water bottles and we hope more brands will opt for this material in the future.

Medical-grade borosilicate glass is another good alternative. Like Pyrex, it’s a stronger form of glass that’s resistant to extreme temperature changes and falls.

Other commonly used materials include bamboo, food-grade silicone, and BPA-free plastic lids (which are hard to eliminate entirely).

Supply chain & labor practices:

Most plastic free water bottles may not be transparent, but we like to see brands that are. Zero greenwashing.

Across the board, there’s room for improvement here, but it’s comforting to see mention of visits to manufacturing partners and third-party audits to ensure ethical working conditions.

Green business practices:

In addition to curbing the use of single-use plastics, these brands are also fighting plastic-free packaging, offering replacement parts, and backing products with lifetime warranties.

Climate Neutral certifications certainly don’t hurt either.

Community & charitable giving:

For heartwarming hydration, many brands donate bottles, time, and funds to support environmental and social projects—including providing clean water (or water purification) to those who need it as not every country has the cleanest water in the world
