7 Organic Bath Towels For The Lowest Impact Dry-Off

We’re taking shower performances to the next level.

We’re not getting into the impact of that hot shower (which you can totally offset, BTW), but we are taking a deep dive into that thirsty towel you use to dry off.

The majority of terry cloth is made from cotton, conventional cotton that is. I.e, one of the world’s dirtiest crops.

To make a single cotton t-shirt requires 2,168 gallons of water (and bear in mind most t-shirts have less fabric than a towel). Organic cotton, on the other hand, sips just 186 gallons.

We also happen to think organic cotton feels better, too.

That’s why we’re filling our bathrooms (and honestly entire homes) with organic cotton towels and linens from brands like Coyuchi.

The organic towels from Boll & Branch mean supporting thousands of fair trade cotton farmers. For a clean body and planet, Under the Canopy only uses non-toxic dyes for their organic towels.

Don’t wait to air dry! Jump into our tub of eco friendly organic towels.

And when the water starts to cool, shimmy to the end of the article to see how these brands were chosen.

About Coyuchi

Comfort and Coyuchi go together like a healthy planet and the regenerative agriculture they promote.

Whether you’re wrapping up in affordable linen sheets, a fair trade blanket, or a climate beneficial fair trade scarf, you can feel great about bringing anything from this coastal-inspired company into your home.

This also goes for both their organic beach towels and organic cotton bath towels (as well as that sustainable robe for some post bathing luxury).

From lighter Air Weight® towels and bath wrap to the new super-plush Cloud Loom™ towels, there’s a towel for everyone’s desired level of absorbency.

Coyuchi’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Made from 100% GOTS organic cotton, these are quite simply some of the best organic towels money can buy. The Air Weight® towels boast additional cotton certifications by MADE SAFE and Fair Trade.

Supply chain & labor practices:

For the softest and most luxurious post-shower/swim comfort, you’ll be wrapping up in Indian or Turkish cotton, grown and woven in the same area.

Their Air Weight towels specifically come from Turkey’s Aegean region and were the first Coyuchi product to bear the Fair Trade symbol.

Many of their manufacturing partners are certified Fair Trade.

Green business practices:

Coyuchi still uses plastic to ship, but they recently joined prAna’s Responsible Packaging Movement. This means they reduced the size of their polybags by up to 59% and switched to ones made from 100% recycled pre-consumer waste.

The goal is to be plastic-free this year.

Their organic Turkish towels and linens not only save water at the farming level but at the manufacturing one, too. Coyuchi works with factories that recycle 98% of wastewater using “zero discharge” textile processing units.

By using limestone to filter out residual dye pigment that then gets used to make cement.

We’re also not coy about our love of Coyuchi’s 2nd Home Take Back program, where their old linens can be sent back to the brand for 15% off.

Community & charitable giving:

Supporting organizations that support our planet is in this Californian company’s ethos.

As members of 1% for the Planet, they fund regenerative and carbon-neutral farming through Fibershed and White Buffalo Land Trust.

That’s in addition to sourcing all wool from regenerative agriculture farms.

About Grund America

We’ve already explored Grund America’s bedding & rugs, now it’s time to check out how they’re bathing fares.

Well-known for their eco friendly bathroom rugs, the Czech company got their start in the early 1990s—in a bedroom and backyard garage, no less.

While they’ve now moved out of their former “factory,” they still maintain family vibes and humble respect for their craft in their now American home.

Use them to fill your bathroom with decorative patterned or solid-colored organic cotton towels that look soft enough to curl up and take a nap on.

Grund America’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

The sustainable softness comes from their 100% OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Grund America is a member of Textile Exchange, a nonprofit making traceability trendy in the world of fashion.

The company’s headquarters is in Prague, which is where their designs come from. The organic towels themselves are responsibly manufactured in Portugal, under safe and fair working conditions.

Green business practices:

The organic towel company is also a member of Green America.

If a splurge on towels makes you feel a little uneasy, Grund offers a 60-day risk-free trial for their towels, plus a 5-year warranty for any defects.

About Pact

Pact is the organic clothing brand that has won us over time again with their impressive selection from organic bras to bathroom essentials.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, they know first hand the magic of nature and want to do their part to protect it by making Earth’s Favorite™ Clothing.

For that, only Earth’s Favorite material will do (looking at you, organic cotton).

With Pact, you can start every morning with a waffle. No syrup required because we’re talking about Pact’s comfortable and sustainable waffle bath towels.

Pact’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Step out of the shower to dry off in a 100% GOTS organic cotton towel that uses up 91% less water than its conventional counterpart. Just don’t use this as an excuse to take a longer shower.

The cotton terry towels have a waffle texture making them soft, light, and quick drying.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The towels seem even softer and lighter when you realize they’re produced in a Fair Trade certified factory. Located in India, Pact’s manufacturing partner provides gainful employment for nearly 1,000 fairly paid workers.

Green business practices:

Pact offers the option to offset the carbon footprint of shipping and uses minimal packaging to make that dry-off even cleaner.

Community & charitable giving:

One way they minimize packaging waste is by having their shipping boxes double as a donation box.

Once you’ve un-Pact your new organic cotton towels, fill the box with any gently used clothes (of any brand) you’re getting rid of, and mail it back. Pact will distribute them to nonprofit organizations.

About Snowe

According to Snowe, everything good happens in bed.

We agree with that, but we also think that good things happen in other parts of the home too.

Like the bathroom (especially if it’s a zero waste bathroom).

In addition to Snowe’s bedding and sustainable robes, we’re excited to welcome Snowe’s bath towels and kitchen towels (available as singles or bundles) into our homes.

For drying off outside the home, they sell beach towels, too.

The best part about them?

They’ll be there for years to come. Thanks to top-quality craftsmanship and earth-friendly materials, these products are designed to last.

Snowe’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Whether you choose classic or honeycomb weave, you will get bath towels made from 100% long-staple cotton. While the material doesn’t have all of the benefits of its organic counterpart, long-staple cotton is better for the planet because it lasts longer.

It’s also certified by OEKO-TEX.

Their kitchen towels aren’t certified organic either, but they are made with premium Belgian flax linen. And if you know anything about linen, it’s darn sustainable in its own right (no organic certification required).

Supply chain & labor practices:

The brand’s towels are produced in Italy and other products in Portugal.

Both countries are known for their high-level craftsmanship and strict ethical standards.

However, we don’t know the details of the manufacturing partners themselves so we’ll be reaching out to inquire about labor standards.

Green business practices:

Your soft and supple towels will come in packaging that is 100% paper-based and recyclable.

About Under the Canopy

Under the Canopy got their start in sustainable production before ‘organic’ and ‘zero waste’ were buzzwords.

While green products that are better for the planet are certainly trendy now, the company aims to keep things affordable.

They believe, as we do, that conscious products should not be exclusive to just those with fatter sustainable wallets.

Thanks to an innovative vertically integrated supply chain and smart design, their towels can help dry our bodies—without drying out our bank accounts.

For added financial peace of mind, you get a 60-day risk-free trial with your Under the Canopy organic towels.

With three towel collections (Signature, Luxe, and Textured), choose between complete organic cotton bath sets, as well as individual bath sheets, bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths. At  579-650 GSM, they’re extra plush and absorbent.

Under the Canopy’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

The towels are now made of 100% organic cotton that is GOTS certified.

They’re certified to be free of harmful chemicals by OEKO-TEX®, treated with non-toxic dyes, and made in environmentally-friendly and safe workplaces.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Under The Canopy also has a big focus on ethical production, which is why their products are manufactured in a way that supports workers’ welfare and community investment.

They partner with GOTS certified factories in Pakistan. All workers are supported with fair pay and safe conditions.

Towels typically aren’t considered a part of our wardrobes, but when it comes to cleaning up our hygiene textile habits we still turn to our sustainable fashion criteria.

Ironically, using organic cotton is the best way to dry yourself despite the fact that it consumes much less water than its conventional counterpart.

For a hot shower and a cool planet, it was our top pick for these organic towels.

Linen, while used far less frequently, was a close second because it also requires few farming inputs.

We also looked for low impact and ideally organic dyes.

Supply chain and labor practices:

We’re happy that our hot and luxurious showers can indirectly support fair trade workers around the globe. Many of these brands are doing even more than fair trade by offering empowerment opportunities for women and additional community investment programs.

Green business practices:

No stinky mildew with these organic towels; no stinky, polluted planet either.

Between linen recycling programs, compostable vs biodegradable packaging, water recycling manufacturing technology, and efforts to minimize shipping impact, each of these brands went beyond simply using sustainable materials.

Community & charitable giving:

For organic cotton beach towels that welcome everyone to the pool party, we were happy to see some of these brands donating their profits or products to organizations helping the needy or the environment.

Worried that your shower performance is not ‘karaoke ready’?

Don’t throw in the towel just yet.

Making small, relatively simple changes can end up having a big impact. And no, we’re not talking about your crescendo!

While we can’t totally erase the impact of our, let’s be honest, sometimes extended hot shower session, we can still choose more sustainable shower products, like organic body wash, zero waste shampoo, loofah alternatives, and, of course, organic bath towels.

So if you’re in the market, consider supporting one of these brands who care about our clean planet as much as they do about our clean bodies.

And feel free to share this with friends who may also appreciate a more sustainable shower.
