9 TENCEL Clothing Brands To Tree-T Yourself

The SJ Team

TENCEL™ puts the T in sustainability—but what is TENCEL™ clothing exactly?

It’s that which is made from a specific brand of lyocell fabric or (less commonly) modal fabric, trademarked by the Austrian company Lenzing.

TENCEL™ is widely regarded as the most sustainable semi-synthetic fabric due to the fact that Lenzing manufactures strictly using a closed-loop process—meaning they recycle all water and chemicals used to turn the wood cellulose into something silken.

No wonder TENCEL™ fabric clothing is popping up faster than the eucalyptus trees from which it comes.

Where to buy TENCEL™ clothing, you ask?

About Amour Vert

Price Range: $–$$$

With a name that’s French for “green love”, it’s hardly any wonder Amour Vert has a penchant for green and sustainable materials like TENCEL™.

They only offer TENCEL™ clothing for women, but this aptly-named Dream Collection features a dreamy range of jumpsuits, pajamas, dresses, tops, and pants.

Like the Agnes Dream Knit Jumpsuit, all the styles are so classy and elegant, they make for excellent sustainable work clothing—even if that means working from home in their PJs.

Amour Vert’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Their range consists of TENCEL™ modal clothing, made mostly of modal with minimal spandex for stretch.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Like the majority of Amour Vert’s clothing, all of their TENCEL™ clothes are made in the USA where labor laws are more strictly enforced.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

The TENCEL™ is created using a closed-loop, carbon-neutral process and finished garments are shipped in compostable or recyclable materials printed with soy inks.

The ReAmour program allows customers to resell any unwanted Amour Vert pieces to keep them in circulation.

About Allbirds

Price Range: $–$$$

Allbirds may be known best as an ethical shoe brand, but their men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing is nothing to shake a stick at, either.

Speaking of sticks…

They use this eucalyptus tree-based fabric in everything from TENCEL™ t-shirts to their Tree line of everyday sneakers and running shoes.

Allbirds’ Ethical & Sustainability Practices

The eucalyptus-derived TENCEL™ makes up the uppers of their “Tree” shoes

The rest of the shoe is unique, too: partial castor bean midsoles, recycled bottle laces, and Proforest-certified carbon negative SweetFoam (made from sugarcane) outsoles.

Their clothing consists of TrinoXO™, a combination of TENCEL™ lyocell, ethically sourced ZQ certified Merino wool, and Chitosan—an odor-reducing biopolymer sourced from the discarded shells of snow crabs.

Supply chain & labor practices:

This San Francisco-based Certified B Corporation works with several manufacturing partners in North Carolina, Indonesia, Vietnam, and China. Many are covered by third-party standards, like SMETA and WRAP.

All suppliers adhere to a stringent Code of Conduct.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

This brand is a big fan of regenerative agriculture and its entire supply chain is carbon-neutral

What emissions they don’t minimize by using things like recyclable and recycled materials for packaging, they offset.

Those offsets will be fewer in the future because Allbirds has plans to cut out more CO2 by doing away with petroleum-based materials and increasing renewable energy.

Men’s TENCEL™ clothing is available in sizes XS to XXXL and women’s in XS to XXL.

Community & charitable giving:

Through a collaboration with Soles4Souls, they donate returned shoes to in-need communities abroad.

About Toad&Co

Price Range: $–$$

From Toad&Co themselves: “We love TENCEL™ so much we would marry it.”

If that doesn’t sound like one of the best TENCEL™ clothing brands, we don’t know what does.

Toad&Co’s TENCEL™ women’s clothes includes a selection almost as wide as its Chaka Wide Leg Pants—along with tops, bottoms, dresses, and underwear.

Their men’s collection is smaller, featuring only tees and undies.

Toad&Co’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Most of the brand’s TENCEL™ lyocell clothing is blended with GOTS-certified organic cotton and a small percentage of elastane.

Only their underwear is almost all TENCEL™ with a touch of spandex.

Supply chain & labor practices:

A California factory that employs disabled adults is where some of their garments are manufactured. Toad&Co partners with global manufacturers for the rest.

Regardless of where the TENCEL™ clothes are made, every factory adheres to the brand’s code of conduct and is regularly audited.

They’ve been featured on Outside Magazine’s best places to work in the sustainable outdoor clothing and gear industry for several years running.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Toad&Couses recycled/reusable/reusable packaging. Wait, reusable?

When checking out, customers have the option to receive their order in a LimeLoop Mailer, which can be sent back to be shipped out again.

Toad&Co also sends any scraps to The Renewal Workshop to be transformed into new garments and offsets all HQ emissions.

All sizes run XS-XL.

5. Organic Basics

Images by Sustainable Jungle and Organic Basics

About Organic Basics

Price Range: $$–$$$

Organic Basics is (perhaps obviously) one of the best organic clothing brands, especially for those everyday essentials we all wear.

Their clothing made of TENCEL™ includes mostly underwear and basics (like simple t-shirts), along with some women’s dresses and pants.

Organic Basics’ Ethical & Sustainability Practices

We know TENCEL™ is the primary material in all garments in this collection, but their website does not make it clear whether it’s 100% TENCEL™ clothing or still contains the 5% of elastane we know it once did.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Organic Basics’ factory details (including which factory made each item) are super transparent: how many employees, hours worked, vacation days, etc.

These factories are regularly visited and backed up by REACH, GOTS, BSCI, and/or OEKO-TEX certifications.

Their TENCEL™ clothing manufacturers take the form of one of two Portuguese factories, one of which is also SA8000-certified and bluesign®-approved.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Sending orders via carbon-neutral shipping, participating in the Regenerative Organic Cotton Pilot Project in Turkey, and operating a low impact website that offsets the carbon emissions generated by browsing, they’re clearly conscious of their environmental impact.

Beyond the “pain killer” solution of carbon offsets, they’re tackling the problem at the source by aiming to reduce emissions by 50% by 2025.

Women’s sizes run from XS-XL and men’s from S-XXL.

Community & charitable giving:

The Certified B Corp is a member of 1% for the Planet, through which they actively support organizations like Nordic Ocean Watch and Rewilding Europe.

How We Found The Best TENCEL™ Clothing Brands

What a garment is made of accounts for the majority of its impact. That’s why sustainable fashion is nigh-impossible without sustainable fabrics.

Semi-synthetic fabrics like lyocell and modal (especially those made by TENCEL™) are two fabrics that are revolutionizing the fashion world.

While perhaps not quite as low impact as, say, hemp, they provide a much-needed alternative to synthetics.

But what is TENCEL™ clothing made of and what else did we consider when choosing these sustainable clothing brands?

First, why TENCEL™? Is TENCEL™ a good fabric for clothes? Is TENCEL™ high-quality?

In short, yes to both. Lyocell fabric has similar performance qualities to polyester—but without being a type of plastic.

Being wood pulp, it’s also biodegradable and breathable like cotton and has the drape and feel of silk.

TENCEL™ lyocell is FSC-certified and comes from eucalyptus trees, which require far less water and pesticides than conventional cotton (giving us an easy answer to the question, “What is better: TENCEL™ or cotton?”)

It’s also produced in a closed-loop process that recycles 99% of chemicals and water.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Fair trade wages and safe work environments are a good first step towards an ethical supply chain, and we’re happy to see many brands doing much more—like keeping it local so that each stop can be reached by bike.

But more than anything, we want transparency with our TENCEL™. In other words, #WhoMadeMyClothes, where were they made, and how the workers are treated.

The more details the better, especially since the authority of certifications like B Corp are being called into question.

Green business practices:

Many brands reduce their impact through carbon offset programs, eliminating plastic, providing reselling or recycling options, upcycled fabric scraps, and embracing other slow fashion practices.

In addition to inclusive size ranges, we look for women or POC-owned brands or those that have made a significant effort towards achieving diversity and inclusivity.

Community & charitable giving:

Donations, tree planting, and grants are some common ways these brands are engaging with and supporting our global communities and planet.

Final Thoughts On Clothing Made Of TENCEL™

Being as soft as peace silk (without the ethical concerns) and a sustainable alternative to synthetic fabrics, TENCEL™  is a welcome addition to the fashion scene.

If you want to jump aboard this eco-friendly clothing from trees-train, support one of these brands—but only when you really need something new.

First, check out some online thrift stores or even the secondhand sections of these brands’ sites.

If all that fails and you end up buying new, be sure to learn how to care for TENCEL™ clothing so it will last you a long time.

Regardless, you can still support these TENCEL™ clothing brands by branching out and sharing this article with friends to grow the canopy of sustainable fashion,
