How We Found The Most Sustainable Outdoor Clothing Brands

Itching for an adventure?

Us, too.

But let’s consider our sustainable fashion criteria before deciding what sustainable hiking pants to wear.

Materials:

When we’re rolling out camp clothes for our next big adventure, we prefer sustainable materials like organic cotton and hemp, ethical wool, recycled organic cotton, TENCEL lyocell, modal, recycled cashmere, and heck, even upcycled coffee grounds!

Synthetic fabrics, when used, should be recycled. Brands like Patagonia are leading the way on this, and we look forward to virgin synthetics becoming a thing of the past.

But keep in mind that even recycled synthetic garments release an average of 700,000 microfibers per wash (or up to one million for fleece). That amounts to 1.5 million tons a year!

So wash ALL synthetic fabrics in a microplastic catching bag like the Guppyfriend.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Brands should, at the very least, have a code of conduct so you can be sure your ethical outdoor clothing isn’t tarnished by forced child labor, unfair working conditions, or harassment.

Many brands, like prAna, are also transparent to the T(ree) about where their factories are based and what certifications are in place to verify their ethical claims.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Between recycled/recyclable packaging, waterless dyeing processes, renewable energy-powered facilities, efficient machinery, regenerative agriculture, and carbon offsetting, there’s a myriad of ways outdoor lifestyle brands can reduce their impact.

We also love to see circular practices, like repair, recycling, and resale programs.

Inclusivity:

Sizes should accommodate all adventurers, and while not all brands are perfect here, most are making progress by offering some plus-size clothing

Community & charitable giving:

Donations of products and funds, activism, education, tree planting, and helping people who usually can’t access outdoor adventures do so—truly make the most sustainable outdoor brands
