Why You Should Buy Bamboo Pajamas

Bamboo viscose fabric is one of the newest sustainable materials to hit the scene so let’s explore it a little deeper.

The typical production of viscose or rayon fabric (whether made from bamboo or not) can result in a significant amount of toxic chemicals—namely caustic soda, carbon disulfide, and sulfuric acid—being released into the environment.

That doesn’t sound very eco-friendly, does it?

These chemicals are also awful for workers, which is why some companies refuse to use bamboo altogether, opting instead for similar semi-synthetics like Tencel® lyocell and modal fabric.

BUT bamboo viscose fabric has some major benefits, both for the wearer and the environment.

So, why are bamboo pajamas environmentally friendly, exactly?

Growing & Manufacturing Bamboo

As a grass, bamboo requires very little pesticides and herbicides to grow, provides a lot of carbon sequestration benefits, and releases 35% more oxygen than trees of the same size.

We may love slow fashion, but we also love fast-growing materials. Bamboo is one of the fastest, and it can keep growing even after the harvesting process.

Compared to cotton (a popular pajama material), bamboo is grown with 1/3 less water

By using closed-loop processing systems to render the bamboo from a pulpy substance into a silky soft fiber, your favorite bamboo pajama set can also be produced in a way that’s nearly zero waste

Water and chemicals are recycled—sometimes hundreds of times—before they’re carefully disposed of.

As bamboo viscose fabric manufacturing processes evolve, we’re excited to see this quick-growing material provide an even greener night’s sleep in the future.

Wearing Bamboo

Bamboo viscose is super soft and breathable, making it a dreamy fabric for pajamas and bamboo sleepwear.

Does bamboo fabric dry quickly?

You betcha. Because it wicks moisture and ensures better airflow, bamboo sleep pants or shirts promote a good night’s sleep in summer by preventing night sweats.

Its moisture-wicking properties also make bamboo viscose an ideal fabric if you suffer from annoying hot flashes.

But can bamboo go into the coziest pajamas for cold weather?

Yup. These same thermoregulating properties make bamboo a perfect option for cooler nights, too.

Year-round wearability for the win!

How We Found The Best Bamboo Pajamas

Don’t fall asleep on sustainable and ethical fashion

Because we wear our pajamas arguably more often than our daytime garb, it’s especially important to wrap ourselves in safe, sustainable, and consciously made clothes.

Materials:

We LOVE that most brands use nearly all organic bamboo, though we’re not sad to see it blended with other sustainable fabrics like organic cotton and Ecovero

Many brands also report avoiding dyes or only using sustainable dyes that are non-toxic and AZO-free.

Whether from dyes or the bamboo process, we don’t want chemicals going to bed with us. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification ensures no toxic chemicals remain in the final garment.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Green bamboo, yes. ✔️ Greenwashing, no thanks. ❌

Unfortunately, greenwashing is a major issue among bamboo users and we’ve come across it a lot

Fortunately, we’ve learned what to look for.

Just about all of these brands transparently report factory details, share Codes of Conduct, or regularly visit their manufacturing partners to ensure safe working conditions and fair pay.

They also hold a wealth of certifications. While a good defense against greenwashing, it’s worth keeping in mind that even the best certifications have loopholes (have you heard of B-Corp greenwashing yet?) so they’re best paired with transparency and your own research.

Green business practices:

Whether reaching carbon neutrality through carbon offset programs, opting for biodegradable or compostable packaging, or using boat and train freight to reduce shipping emissions, it’s heartening to see brands that are trying to curb the impacts of their supply chain.

The notion of circularity also means that some brands have designed their bamboo silk pajamas to be biodegradable or at least ensure that they’re durable enough to be passed down through family members.

Inclusivity:

There are many women-owned and operated companies on our list. We’d love to see more of them embrace a more inclusive size range and offer plus size bamboo pajamas.

Community & charitable giving:

These are some bamboo-loving brands that give back.

Between donating money and time, it’s heart-warming to see brands that don’t just dream of a better world but take action to make it a reality.

Final Thoughts On Bamboo Sleepwear

Bamboo pajamas: warm, cool, and ready for some sustainable shuteye.

Are you feeling a little less bamboozled about bamboo sleepwear?

When in doubt, look for transparent supply chains and closed-loop processing or other efforts that reduce the impact of manufacturing.

If you still say “boo” to bamboo, there are plenty of other sustainable pajamas and organic cotton pajamas for more sustainable slumber options.

And feel free to (bamboo) shoot this article over to some friends in need of a good night’s sleep.
