Your deodorant sits on one of the most absorbent areas of your body, yet most people don’t think twice about what chemicals are being absorbed through their skin each day.

Conventional deodorants contain ingredients linked to hormone disruption and skin irritation, and most are wrapped in hard-to-recycle plastic. After months (and in many cases, years) of testing natural deodorants ourselves and researching ingredients from health and environmental perspectives, we’ve found the best non-toxic deodorant brands that work.

What We Looked For

In evaluating the best natural deodorants for this guide, we prioritized the following (as much as possible):

  • Formulas free from aluminum, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and other harmful chemicals
  • Use of organic and natural ingredients that are gentle on skin and effective at controlling odor
  • Real-world effectiveness for everyday use

Our Testing, Ratings & Research

In many cases, we used these deodorants in our own lives for several weeks or months, assessing odor control, skin comfort, longevity, ease of application, and overall value. In some cases, we’ve been wearing these deos for years so can confidently say they stand the test of time.

For brands we didn’t test directly, we conducted careful research to bring you the safest and most effective non-toxic deodorants available.

For brands we work with through our sustainability rating system, we evaluated their initiatives across 22 criteria including supply chain, labor practices, and environmental commitments. See other rated brands in our sustainable brand directory.

  • Price: ~$10

Performance Review of No Pong’s Deodorant

“I’ve been wearing No Pong’s original formula deodorant on and off (in between testing others) for years now. It’s my go to formula for quick application (despite it being a cream) as it has a very smooth texture that’s easy to rub in and outstanding “pong” prevention for everyday use. I have been out running and to the gym while wearing it and I’d say it stacks up against most natural deodorants but definitely needs reapplication after vigorous exercise. I find it to be great value given its price at ~$10 and easily accessible at grocery stores near me or from online retailers.”

HiBAR Solid Deodorant

  • Format: Solid stick in compostable push-up tube (oval-shaped). Sensitive skin option.
  • Scents: Fresh Rain & Cucumber, Bergamot & Cedar (bestseller), Lavender & Jasmine, Coconut & Vanilla, Mint & Eucalyptus. Sensitive options include Fragrance-Free, Pink Iris & Neroli, and Aloe & Sea Moss

  • Made in: Minnesota, USA
  • What makes it natural & non-toxic: Free from parabens, phthalates, aluminum, synthetic fragrances, dyes, and animal-derived ingredients.
  • What we love: HiBAR has eliminated nearly five million plastic bottles from becoming waste. All products ship in plastic-free, recyclable and compostable packaging. Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.
  • Price: ~$13

Performance Review of HiBAR’s Deodorant

“I’ve tried all three of HiBAR’s deodorant scents and I adore all of them, but I especially love the fresh and just slightly floral Lavender & Jasmine. All three scents are subtle so I don’t smell them all day, but at the same time I don’t smell myself either! These have a much longer lasting wear than other aluminum-free solid deodorants I’ve tried. I apply twice a day (morning and night) and I’ve been working on the same tube for seven months and it’s not empty yet. I’ve literally never found a deodorant that lasts that long AND works!”

  • Format: Cream in jar (apply with fingers)
  • Scents: Rosemary, Sandalwood & Lavender
  • Key Ingredients: Organic coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, baking soda, essential oils
  • Made in: California, USA (small-batch, handmade)
  • What makes it natural & non-toxic: Organic ingredients. No aluminum, parabens, phthalates, talc, propylene glycol, triclosan or synthetic anything.
  • What we love: A wide range of organic personal care products from a small, US-based maker. Simple, recognizable ingredient list you can feel good about. Great performance (best for winter)
  • Note: Contains baking soda, so may not be suitable for those with sensitive skin
  • Price: ~$19

Performance Review of Butter Me Up Organics’ Deodorant

“This is one of the top deodorants I’ve tried, especially if you’re a fan of creams over sticks. While I’ve been disappointed to find some of the most popular aluminum-free options leave me needing to reapply multiple times a day, I typically only need to apply this once in the morning and once at night, which is very impressive. Plus the rosemary and lavender scent is so pleasantly subtle. The one issue I found is that this cream softens a lot in warmer weather, which means it doesn’t work as well for me in summer. As such, I use this as my wintertime deodorant where it doesn’t soften sitting on my bathroom counter.”

  • Price: $19-$23

Performance Review of EcoRoots’ Deodorant

“Joy and I have both tried the Rose Geranium and Coconut Deodorant Cream. Much like other natural deodorants, the scents are understated, which I prefer over the overwhelming conventional type. I found the application simple since it’s pretty creamy and spreads easily (though I have to wash my hands given I use my finger and not the spatula). Sometimes it can feel a bit grainy but I’ve never had irritation. It’s effective too. I’ve never detected any BO over the course of a day. For normal day to day, it’s smooth, reliable, and leaves no residue.”

  • What we love: Creators of the world’s first compostable deodorant tube. Certified B Corp, Certified Plastic Negative through rePurpose Global. All products are vegan and Leaping Bunny certified. Gender-neutral brand making gender-neutral products.
  • Notable: Their deodorant cream also works well for foot odor. Multi-use for the win!
  • Price: $5-$45 (mini to bulk sizing available. The tubes are priced at $14)

Performance Review of Meow Meow Tweet’s Deodorant

“I tried the Lavender Bergamot deodorant in a compostable tube. I loved the scent – very calming but not overpowering at all! It lasted pretty much a whole day including often busy, sweaty days running around. Application was smooth and easy despite the compostable tube (not always the case with other brands I’ve tried) – I think it’s the texture which is more creamy and goes on easily. One tube lasts quite some time so I think it’s worth the price.”

  • Format: Solid stick or bar
  • Scents: Unscented, Rose & Citrus, Eucalyptus & Peppermint
  • Key Ingredients: Magnesium hydroxide, arrowroot powder, shea butter, coconut oil, rice bran wax, vitamin E, kaolin clay
  • Made in: Likely USA or Canada (Plantish say they have operations in both but don’t explicitly state where products are made)
  • What makes it natural & non-toxic: No baking soda (ideal for sensitive skin), no aluminum, no synthetic fragrances. Uses magnesium hydroxide and kaolin clay for odor control. Anti-inflammatory ingredients like vitamin E protect delicate underarm skin.
  • What we love: A simple, no-fuss formula that does exactly what it promises. The travel-size option is one of the smallest on the market, perfect for carry-on bags. Great option for anyone with reactive skin who’s struggled with other natural deodorants.
  • Price: $8-$15 (mini to full size)

Performance Review of Plantish Future’s Deodorant

“I’m pretty much an expert in testing deodorants now, and I was skeptical when I saw this formula was unscented. So I was really impressed with how so little goes such a long way and works. The magnesium hydroxide and arrowroot powder kept me feeling dry, while shea butter, coconut oil, and rice bran wax kept my skin from drying out. Plus, anti-inflammatory ingredients like vitamin E and kaolin clay (combined with the fact that there’s no baking soda) means my armpit skin didn’t get irritated in the slightest. It’s also worth calling out that they make the smallest travel deodorant I’ve ever seen, which is so nice when suitcase space is limited.”

  • Key Ingredients: Magnesium hydroxide, coconut oil, arrowroot powder, shea butter, baking soda (or magnesium for sensitive formulas), candelilla wax, jojoba esters, vitamin E
  • Made in: USA
  • What makes it natural & non-toxic: No aluminum, parabens, or phthalates. Plant-based ingredients. Offers a sensitive skin range that’s baking soda-free.
  • What we love: Certified 100% natural origin. Available at most major retailers, making it an easy first step into non-toxic deodorants. Affordable entry point under $10.
  • Note: Schmidt’s was acquired by Unilever, so while the formula remains clean, it’s no longer an independent brand. Comes in plastic tubes.
  • Price: $8-$10

Performance Review of Schmidt’s Deodorant

“I started using Schmidt’s back in 2017 when they still offered cream jars and pretty much tried their entire range. I loved the Bergamot + Lime and found them all to be very effective for everyday use. And the affordability is a major plus. I think for anyone transitioning from conventional deodorant, the plastic tubes offer a handy, familiar vessel but ultimately I switch to deodorant options with less or no plastic packaging.”

  • Format: Solid stick in compostable cardboard tube
  • Scents: Vanilla + Lavender, Eucalyptus + Cedarwood, Tropical Mango, Sweet Rose, Fresh Cotton, Fragrance-Free
  • Key Ingredients: Magnesium hydroxide, zinc oxide, bamboo powder, tapioca starch, sweet almond oil, candelilla wax, jojoba esters
  • Made in: New Zealand (also operates in the USA)
  • What makes it natural & non-toxic: Aluminum-free, baking soda-free, no synthetic fragrances, no propylene glycol. Uses zinc oxide and magnesium hydroxide to prevent odor-causing bacteria. Bamboo powder absorbs moisture (up to 200% of its own weight) without blocking pores.
  • What we love: Certified B Corp. All products are vegan, PETA-certified cruelty-free, and palm oil-free. Compostable cardboard packaging. They’ve prevented over 20 million plastic bottles from being manufactured. One bar equals 2–3 traditional deodorant sticks.
  • Note: These deodorants include mica (there are ethical issues associated with mica) and a few fragrance components that could cause skin irritation.
  • Price: ~$14

Performance Review of Ethique’s Deodorant

“I used Ethique’s deodorant for years. I loved the understated smell. It has a nice texture too, smooth and easy to apply. On a warm day you don’t need to apply much pressure, just a couple of gentle rubs is enough. In winter the bar is a bit harder so I apply a bit more pressure. It’s very effective. I don’t get BO when using these. I still sweat (it’s not an antiperspirant) but even when doing light exercise, there is no smell. It does leave a little white mark on your clothes but that comes off easily in the wash. I’m a big fan of the cardboard tubes; they’re easier than using your fingers with a deodorant jar. Since Ethique was acquired, I haven’t quite got the same vibe from the brand that previously made it such a no-brainer for us so have switched to other brands in recent years.”

How We Chose These Non-Toxic Deodorants

Ingredient Safety

Every recommendation had to meet our core standards: no aluminum compounds, no parabens or phthalates, no synthetic fragrances, no triclosan or propylene glycol, and transparent ingredient lists.

Organic & Natural Ingredients

We prioritized brands using organic, natural, and recognizable ingredients. Why does this matter? The underarm area is thin-skinned and highly vascular, meaning ingredients absorb readily into the body. Organic ingredients ensure that what’s being absorbed hasn’t been grown with synthetic pesticides or fertilizers that leave residues. Natural ingredients like magnesium hydroxide, arrowroot powder, coconut oil, and zinc oxide have long safety records and are gentle on skin while being effective at odor control.

Effectiveness

A non-toxic deodorant is only good if it actually works. We prioritized brands we’ve personally tested over weeks, months or years, and looked for effective odor control (after going for a run and vigorous exercise), reasonable longevity between applications, and comfortable texture.

Sustainability Considerations

Given our focus on sustainability, we also considered: plastic-free or low-waste packaging (compostable tubes, glass jars, recyclable tins); B Corp or other third-party certifications; cruelty-free and vegan practices; ethical ingredient sourcing; and small-batch or transparent manufacturing.

Value

We included affordable non-toxic deodorant options ranging from under or around $10 (No Pong, Schmidt’s) to premium picks.

Why Switch to a Non-Toxic & Natural Deodorant?

Health Concerns with Conventional Deodorants

Before diving into the health concerns, we should note that there are mixed perspectives on the direct impact of many of these traditional deodorant ingredients. This article from Cancer.org shares a counter argument. In our view, it’s worth eliminating any risk so we personally opt for natural deodorants and avoid as many harmful ingredients as possible..

Why Natural Ingredients Are Better

Natural deodorants work with your body rather than against it. Instead of blocking sweat glands with aluminum, they use naturally antibacterial and odor-neutralizing ingredients like magnesium hydroxide, zinc oxide, and coconut oil to keep you smelling fresh while allowing your body’s natural cooling system to function.

Many of the best natural deodorants use organic ingredients, ensuring the plant-based components (coconut oil, shea butter, essential oils) haven’t been grown with synthetic pesticides. This matters when those ingredients are being applied to one of the most absorbent areas of your body, twice a day.

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: What’s the Difference?

Deodorant neutralizes or masks body odor. Antiperspirant physically blocks sweat glands using aluminum compounds. Natural deodorants are deodorants, not antiperspirants. They address odor without preventing sweat, and sweating is your body’s natural and healthy cooling and detoxification mechanism.

Ingredient Guide: What to Look For (and Avoid) in Natural Deodorants

Ingredients to Avoid

  • Aluminum compounds (aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium): While some might say Al is “natural”, it functions to block sweat glands, linked to potential endocrine disruption
  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben): synthetic preservatives that can mimic estrogen
  • Phthalates: often hidden in “fragrance,” associated with reproductive toxicity
  • Triclosan: antibacterial agent banned by the FDA in soaps but still found in some deodorants
  • Propylene glycol: petroleum-derived penetration enhancer
  • Synthetic fragrances: can hide undisclosed chemicals

Safe & Effective Natural Ingredients

  • Magnesium hydroxide: naturally occurring mineral that neutralizes odor-causing bacteria. Gentle on skin.
  • Arrowroot powder / Tapioca starch: natural moisture absorbers that keep underarms dry without blocking pores
  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate): highly effective odor neutralizer, though it can irritate sensitive skin due to its high pH. EWG rates it as low-risk.
  • Coconut oil: naturally antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Used as a base in many natural formulas
  • Zinc oxide: mineral with antibacterial properties, also used in natural sunscreens
  • Essential oils (tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus): natural antibacterial and antifungal properties
  • Probiotics: support beneficial bacteria on the skin, crowding out odor-causing bacteria

The Natural Deodorant Transition: What to Expect

Switching from conventional antiperspirant to natural deodorant often involves a transition period of 2-4 weeks. During this time you may sweat more than usual as your sweat glands “unclog” and begin functioning normally. You might also notice increased odor as your underarm microbiome rebalances. This is normal and temporary.

How to Choose the Right Non-Toxic Deodorant

Tips for a smoother switch: Apply to clean, dry skin for best results. Reapply mid-day during the transition period. Consider trying an armpit detox (bentonite clay mask on underarms). Choose a formula with magnesium hydroxide or zinc oxide for stronger initial protection. And be patient with your body.

For sensitive skin: Look for baking soda-free formulas. From this list: Bai-li, Plantish Future, EcoRoots cream, and No Pong’s Bicarb Free formula are all designed for reactive skin.

For active lifestyles and men: You want strong odor-fighting ingredients. HiBAR’s Bergamot & Cedar and Ethique’s Eucalyptus + Cedarwood have both proven effective during exercise in our testing. No Pong’s Original formula claims 24+ hours of freshness (which we can back up over 12 hours or so).

For budget-conscious shoppers: No Pong (~$10) and Schmidt’s (~$8-$10) deliver great value without compromising on natural ingredients.

For cream lovers: EcoRoots, Butter Me Up Organics, No Pong, and Fat and the Moon all offer cream/paste formats. These tend to provide better ingredient contact but require hand application. We’re a big fan of how these feel and the application is a much more gentle experience, but we acknowledge when you’re in a rush, the sticks are more handy.

Frequently Asked Questions on Natural & Non-Toxic Deodorants

Do natural deodorants actually work? Yes, but they work differently than conventional antiperspirants. Natural deodorants neutralize odor-causing bacteria rather than blocking sweat. You’ll still perspire (which is healthy), but you shouldn’t smell. In our testing, HiBAR, Ethique, No Pong, Schmidt’s and Butter Me Up Organics all provided all-day odor protection.

Is baking soda safe in deodorant? Baking soda is an effective odor neutralizer, and EWG lists it as low-risk. However, its high pH (~9) compared to skin’s natural pH (~5.5) can cause redness or a rash in some people. If you experience this, switch to a baking soda-free formula using magnesium hydroxide.

Is Native deodorant non-toxic? Native is better than most conventional deodorants. It’s aluminum-free and uses simple ingredients. However, it was acquired by Procter & Gamble and some formulas contain processed ingredients that stricter non-toxic standards would flag. It’s a decent starting point but not the cleanest option.

Is Lume deodorant non-toxic? Lume markets itself as natural, but some formulations contain dimethicone (a silicone), cetyl alcohol, and synthetic fragrances. It’s aluminum-free but not what we’d consider truly non-toxic.

Why does my natural deodorant stop working? Your body’s bacteria can adapt over time, and hormonal changes, diet, or stress can affect performance. Try switching scents or brands periodically, or rotate between two deodorants. Also make sure you’re applying to clean, dry skin.

How long does natural deodorant last? This varies. In our testing, HiBAR lasted over seven months of daily use. Ethique sticks lasted several months. Cream deodorants like Butter Me Up Organics last 2–3 months. No Pong claims one tin lasts about a month. Generally, you get comparable or better value than conventional options though we wouldn’t leave natural deodorants sitting on the shelf for years. If the question relates to how long does natural deodorant protect for, we’ve found most last the entire day though often need reapplication after excessive sweating.

What’s the best organic deodorant? For certified organic ingredients, Butter Me Up Organics and EcoRoots stand out with mostly organic ingredients. Bai-li also uses certified organic ingredients throughout. Primally Pure uses organic and fair trade ingredients. For most people, any of the brands on our list use ingredients that are significantly cleaner than conventional deodorants.

Are natural deodorants safe for kids? For tweens and teens starting to use deodorant, look for gentle, unscented, baking soda-free formulas. Plantish Future (unscented) and Bai-li (unscented) are good options. No Pong’s Bicarb Free Fragrance-Free formula is another gentle choice that we personally wear most days.

Final Thoughts on the Best Natural Deodorants

Choosing a non-toxic deodorant is one of the simplest swaps you can make for your health. The ingredients in conventional deodorants and antiperspirants raise real concerns, from aluminum absorption to endocrine disruptors hiding in synthetic fragrances.

The best option depends on your body chemistry and preferences. For a solid stick that lasts, HiBAR is hard to beat. For an organic cream that really works, Butter Me Up Organics impressed us most. For budget and variety, No Pong and Schmidt’s make the switch accessible, given their affordability. And for sensitive skin, Plantish Future and EcoRoots won’t let you down.

Whatever you choose, ditching aluminum, parabens, and synthetic fragrances will significantly reduce your daily chemical exposure. We hope this guide helps you find your match!
