What’s the use in choosing a sustainable mattress if you’re just going to cover it with synthetic fabrics?

An organic mattress protector protects you (from dust mites, bacteria, and off-gassing chemicals), your mattress (from excessive wear and tear), and the planet (from toxic materials).

To ensure you don’t overlook this often-forgotten bedroom essential, we’ve rounded up the most nap-worthy non-toxic mattress covers that are not only made of the safest of materials but also have the relevant certifications to back them up.

Soon, we’ll be employing our Brand Rating System when we next refresh this article. This new system will examine brands across a spectrum of sustainability-related criteria that you can learn about here. It obviously includes chemical management and use but also climate impact and transparency, and that’s just the pillow-top of this comprehensive system.

We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.

Organic Mattress Pads That Protect More Than Just Your Bed

Ethical Bedding was an obvious inclusion for us. They use organically-grown eucalyptus that’s spun into fiber using only one non-toxic solvent that’s recaptured and recycled.

If you’re working from bed these days, coffee spill-proof your bed with an organic waterproof mattress protector from one of our favorite sustainable sleepytime brands: PlushBeds. After sleeping on this for a year, we can confirm it’s breathable, quiet, and doesn’t mess with the plushness of our mattress’s pillow top at all.

You don’t have to take Happsy‘s word for it that their mattress protector is non-toxic. Every material used is in the Zero Toxics registry and the finished product is certified by top-tier non-toxicity testers like MADE SAFE and Greenguard Gold,

PlushBeds

PlushBeds has not been rated.

About PlushBeds

Price Range: $65–$165

Their name says it all—PlushBeds is all about providing a comfortable night’s sleep, but doing so with sustainable and natural materials. All three types of mattress protectors will fit normal and split sizes, from organic twin mattress protectors to California King.

Per our PlushBeds review on this very product we found there was zero crinkly stiffness that you’ll often find with mattress protectors, it doesn’t diminish the plushness of our mattress’ pillow top in any way. And it makes little to no noise!

PlushBeds’ Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Their best organic cotton mattress pad is the one actually made of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. However, this Mattress Protector also features a waterproof polyurethane underside. Polyurethane is the safest and cleanest waterproof mattress protector barrier available on the market currently, and the PU here is free of VOCs, PVC, and harmful chemicals.

Their Cotton & Wool design features 100% natural cotton (note: not organic) and absorbent Shropshire wool with a waterproof recyclable microfiber lining and fitted skirt.

They also sell a fully waterproof mattress protector, but this features a H2Pro™ liquid-proof membrane, but its polyester fabric construction doesn’t make us sleep easy.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Most products are made in their own California factory, but we’re not certain if the mattress pads are included in that so we’ve reached out to confirm.

They have an impressive list of certifications under their pillow: GOLS, GOTS, USDA organic, GreenGuard Gold, OEKO-TEX, and more.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Partnering with TerraPass Carbon Neutral, PlushBeds offsets the emissions of their website. They are also a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and a Green America Certified Business. Products come in biodegradable packaging made of hemp and corn film.

My Personal Review of PlushBed’s Organic Mattress Protector:

“If you’re looking for a waterproof mattress protector that actually works without crinkling like a plastic bag, I can highly recommend the PlushBeds Organic Mattress Protector. It’s got a super soft, GOTS-certified organic cotton cover and a waterproof layer that’s non-toxic—so no worries there. The best part? It’s not some stiff, noisy barrier like you might expect. I can still feel the plushness of my pillow-top mattress underneath, and it’s practically silent when I toss and turn. No sweaty nights, either! This breathable protector keeps everything cool and dry. I’ve had it for a whole year now, and it’s been comfortable all year long.”

Happsy

Happsy has not been rated.

About Happsy

Price Range: $65–$165

According to Happsy, we spend a third of our lives sleeping on a mattress—so why would we spend that time sleeping on petroleum?! Unlike other companies, they aren’t okay with toxic chemicals and flame retardants—which is why they created the first fully certified organic mattress.

In addition to The Mattress, they also have other slumber accessories—pillows, sheets, and some of the best organic mattress protectors around.

Happsy’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

The king mattress protector (down to size twin) is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey combined with a non-toxic waterproof barrier. While thiswaterproof mattress pads barrier isn’t itself organic, they never use toxic chemicals or bleach and don’t treat their cotton with boric acid.

All products are registered in the Zero Toxics registry and are certified by MADE SAFE, Greenguard Gold, UL Environment (formaldehyde free), FSC, and Rainforest Alliance.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Happsy has their own certified organic factory in the USA. They prioritize a family-friendly environment and employee happiness, notably by paying workers “excellent wages”.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Keeping a mattress out of landfills is one of the greenest things a sleep brand can do, so Happsy offers a 20-year warranty on theirs.

Their Green America Gold business certification also attests to their effort to keep business practices clean. As a member of the Organic Trade Association, American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), and Sustainable Furnishings Council, they’re doing their part to help other home companies follow suit.

Ethical Bedding

About Ethical Bedding

For those who want something more silky and cooling than cotton, Ethical Bedding makes one of the softest organic mattress covers. Offering both a protector and a deep fitting topper (or a bundle of both), they’ll fit any bed, including single, double, king, super king, and emperor sizes.

And you’ll feel like royalty on it too, since it’s “sort of like underwear, but for your bed. Really squishy, satisfying underwear”.

Ethical Bedding’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Ethical Bedding uses 100% eucalyptus fiber sourced from FSC-certified “non-farmable” biodiverse forests. Aiming for a total transparency and cruelty-free supply chain, Ethical Bedding is Vegan Society-approved and a Certified B Corp. They regularly visit and audit their partners, all of whom pay over living wages.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Naturepedic

Naturepedic has not been rated.

About Naturepedic

Price Range: $65–$165

With nature serving as their inspiration, Naturepedic supplies customers with healthier and safer sleep products.

While they specialize in mattresses, they also sell the means to protect and cover it. Whether you’re buying one for yourself or an organic waterproof mattress protector for your baby’s non-toxic crib, Naturepedic’s offerings are downright therapeutic.

Naturepedic’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

We love their mattress pads because they feature two layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey on top and bottom, with an ultra-thin polyurethane waterproof and breathable barrier in the middle. They also feature DrySleep™ technology that blocks liquids but prevents sweating and clamminess.

Certified by MADE SAFE and GreenGuard, they’re free of questionable materials like phthalates, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), vinyl, PVC, and butane rubber.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Naturepedic is a family-owned business that is proud to work with US-based artisans and Amish craftspeople. This isn’t possible for their entire product range, so they also work with factories in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

In addition to being subject to regular inspections, most factories and suppliers hold certifications from organizations like GOTS, GOLS, and Rainforest Alliance.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

In their most recent sustainability report, they highlight efforts to recycle polyethylene, obtained both from scrap collected during the mattress production and from damaged products.

Coyuchi

Coyuchi has not been rated.

About Coyuchi

Price Range: $65–$165

The word ‘Coyuchi’ is based on the word “coyote” but you won’t hear any howling when you buy products from this slumber specialist.

They’re committed to respecting every part of the journey of their products—”from the soil our fibers are raised from, to our customers that welcome us into the most sacred parts of their lives”.

These trailblazers of sustainability were born in California, and they’ve used coastal inspiration for their products like mattress pads and toppers, including the Climate Beneficial organic wool mattress pad.

Coyuchi’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

If you want to transform your bed into a comfy retreat, the wool topper is the secret Coyuchi wants to share with us all. Unlike all the toxic chemicals found in synthetic memory foam, the Climate Beneficial wool is encased in a 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton keeps you comfortable, whatever the weather.

They also have a mattress pad that’s GOTS and MADE SAFE certified free of flame retardants and chemical finishes and will also extend the life of a mattress!

The Climate Beneficial wool is sourced from two farms just 12 miles from the Coyuchi HQ. It’s processed in a historic mill in Michigan with biodegradable soap before being air dried. Then, instead of harmful chemicals, it’s finished using steam and humidity.

The organic cotton is sourced and woven at Coyuchi’s farming co-op in India. Local supply chain aside, the factory is Fair Trade certified, with additional funding allocated to Community Development Funds.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Climate Beneficial Wool is worth mentioning again because it’s based on carbon farming and results in a raw materials that have a net negative CO2 footprint. Coyuchi partners with water-recycling manufacturers.

The mattress protectors are sent in reusable, organic cloth bags. They also have a 2nd Home Take Back program that allows customers to send back old Coyuchi home linens to be transformed into new products.

About Avocado

Price Range: $69–$399

This has been recognized by Consumer Reports as the highest independently rated mattress, but they help with all the necessities for beauty sleep—including furnishing your bedroom with non-toxic furniture.

The Avocado mattress pad protector is worth bragging about, and it comes in all sizes (twin – California king). For new parents out there, they have a 100% GOTS–certified organic crib mattress protector, too.

Avocado’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Both are certified by GREENGUARD Gold for low emissions and UL Environment as Formaldehyde-Free. Along with the rest of their products, they are also MADE SAFE certified.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Avocado is a Certified B Corp, so it’s no surprise that an ethical supply chain is just as important as non-toxic materials.

Being a “farm-to-bedroom” brand, they partly own the Indian factory where some of their products are made, eliminating much of the middleman. They also have a wool collective and a latex farm. Everything under the Avocado umbrella uses ILO fair labor standards.

For products that aren’t made abroad, Avocado has a self-owned factory in LA that is certified organic by GOTS and GOLS. All workers get living wages and access to health care, as well as mental health resources and three weeks of paid vacation.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Avocado is a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, a Climate Neutral Certified business, and the first in the mattress industry to reach a negative carbon status. Boll & Branch

About Boll & Branch

Price Range: $65–$165

Shortly after the tragic Rana Plaza collapse, co-founders of Boll & Branch, Missy and Scott Tannen, decided to create and sell bedding they could be proud of. Their products are made with safe and healthy materials by workers supported through an ethical supply chain and wages that go beyond the minimum threshold.

Their mattress protector—along with their Cloud Toppers for extra comfort—lives up to these standards and comes in three sizes: full, king, and California king.

Boll & Branch’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Speaking of fair trade, Boll & Branch was the first company in the linen industry to become Fair Trade Certified. From day one, they prioritized “a supply chain we’d gladly take home to our mothers”. Since producing their first products in 2013, they have paid more than half a million dollars in additional wages.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Opting for boat shipping instead of air freight, B&B saves thousands of tons of carbon emissions every year—the equivalent of what 4,500 cars produce in a year! They use recycled and recyclable/compostable packaging materials.

Mattress protectors are made in Pakistan with organic cotton grown in Texas. Some products, like their organic crib mattresses, are made in their own LA-based factory.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

They partner with Carbonfund to offset the carbon footprint of their shipping and LA factory and promote circular production creation when possible—like using denim scraps to make mattress cores.
