Low waste living makes us smile—so where better to start than with sustainable toothpaste?
Every year, one billion plastic toothpaste tubes end up in landfills, where they take forever to biodegrade. Whether you’re pro or anti-fluoride, we can at least all agree that when it comes to toothpaste, plastic-free is the way to go. That’s why—even if it sounds cheesy—we can’t wait to say “Cheese!” with the sustainable toothpaste brands taking a huge bite out of plastic waste.
To find the shiniest brands for our pearly whites, we considered ingredients (read: no traditional toothpaste nasties), sourcing, packaging, and brands that are vegan and cruelty free.
Note: Our brand rating system assesses brands based on multiple sustainability-related criteria, including things like product safety, chemical use, and ethics in the supply chain. Brands need to opt in to be rated. Look out for rated brands below and find others in our directory.
We independently research all featured brands, and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. We explain this further in our Terms of Use.
The Best Sustainable Toothpaste Brands That Make Us Grin Ear-To-Ear
What is a good substitute for travel toothpaste?
Eco-friendly toothpaste tablets! For that, Huppy’s waterless bites won’t cause you trouble with TSA or the planet. We love that they create a rich foam and have a subtle, not overpowering flavor.
For plastic-free toothpaste with fluoride or without it, etee also goes tubeless and provides refills of their toothpaste tablets in compostable pouches. We found they foamed really well and also helped with our tooth sensitivity.
Humble Co. offers a holistically humble range of effective and sustainable oral care products that prioritize both the health of the individual and the health of the planet. We love that their eco-friendly toothpaste packaging is totally compostable, and the tablets left our pearly whites feeling clean and fresh.

Sustainable Toothpaste Without Fluoride
Huppy
Huppy’s Sustainable Toothpaste Tabs
Huppy’s vegan zero waste toothpaste was the end result from over 100 formula iterations to create one of the best eco-friendly toothpastes around.
Filled with pro-tooth antibacterial and whitening ingredients like coconut oil, tea tree oil, and Xylitol sweetener, you’ll find no sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), GMOs, sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, or artificial dyes.
Instead of fluoride, the mineral hydroxyapatite works to protect teeth from plaque and remineralize enamel.
These tablets are available in peppermint, charcoal mint (for plastic-free teeth whitening properties), watermelon strawberry, and cool mint flavors.
You can either buy once or subscribe for a four-month supply (248 tablets).
For the latter, you save 33%, receive an additional aluminum travel case, and get compostable refills delivered right to your door.
About Huppy
Huppy is here to “do good, give back, and leave the world a whole lot brighter”—not to mention doing the same to your teeth.
100% vegan and cruelty-free, they use only sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients.
All packaging is compostable or recyclable, complete with water-based ink labels, and 2% of their revenue is donated to various sustainability initiatives.
My Personal Review of Huppy’s Toothpaste Tablets:
“I’ve tried countless natural toothpastes, but Huppy’s tablets are by far the most foamy of all. They’ve definitely become a personal favorite. There’s just something about that rich foam that makes my teeth feel extra clean. Plus, they’re really easy to use, travel-friendly, and the flavor is just right—subtle and not too overpowering.”

Georganics
Georganics’ Eco-Friendly Toothpaste UK
Georganics offers some of the most sustainable toothpaste with no fluoride, SLS, palm oil (or derivatives), or glycerin.
It features calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate bases, said to be rich in enamel-strengthening minerals that reduce tooth sensitivity. Choose between ginger, red mandarin, tea tree, English peppermint, spearmint, and pure flavors.
For toothpaste not in a tube, you can find theirs in reusable glass jars with a bamboo spatula for application. You can also buy sets of environmentally friendly toothpaste bites, oil-pulling mouthwash, and eco-friendly floss.
About Georganics
UK-based sustainable toothpaste company Georganics specializes in vegan, organic, zero waste dental care.
Beyond toothpaste, they also make oil pulling mouthwashes, bamboo floss, dental supplements, and travel-handy sustainable mouthwash tabs, which are perfect for life on the go. All products come in biodegradable or reusable packaging and are made to order in England using many locally sourced ingredients.
When you empty their plastic-free toothpaste, UK residents can return any Georganics products and components at no cost as part of their “Zero To Landfill scheme”. Their products are cruelty-free and vegan except for their silk floss which is “obtained only once the worms have hatched and cocoons are vacant”.
They also support The Ocean Cleanup‘s efforts to reduce plastic waste.
SuperBee
SuperBee’s Plastic-Free Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth
SuperBee offers sustainable toothpaste without baking soda, which is also vegan, cruelty-free, and made with natural ingredients—including sorbitol, spearmint oil, menthol, mannitol, plant-based magnesium stearate, coconut SLS, and 1% PVP.
Their spearmint Dentos toothpaste tablets come in a reusable pack and are fluoride-free, talc-free, sugar-free, and palm oil-free.
But if you’re looking for an eco-friendly toothpaste for sensitive teeth, the spearmint flavor is specially designed to be sensitive tooth-friendly.
Just chew each tab into a paste, then brush away the plaque, germs, and bad breath.
We can confirm that these work super well and actually foam a bit better than other toothpaste tabs we’ve tried thanks to the coconut-based non-toxic SLS in the formula.
And because there’s no baking soda, it’s very gentle on both the mouth tissue and gums. We haven’t noticed any canker sores since we’ve been using this toothpaste.
Each pack contains 100 tablets, which equates to approximately three months of toothpaste for one person.
About SuperBee
Committed to sustainability and ethical business practices, SuperBee uses only natural and organic ingredients in their products—which also includes beeswax wraps, reusable bags, paper towel alternatives, and bamboo straws—and their packaging is plastic-free, reusable, and recyclable.
Bee-yond that, SuperBee is a Certified B Corp and social enterprise that empowers local communities in Thailand by providing training and employment opportunities for wages 20% higher than the local living wage.
Because volunteer firefighers there often have to work in their own clothes, SuperBee helps provide them with equipment, food, and water.
The Dirt
The Dirt’s Plastic-Free Powdered Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth
The Dirt’s minimalist tooth powders—available in sweet spice orange or super mint—are vegan and paleo, and sans fluoride, glycerin, or GMO-derived Xylitol.
Instead of baking soda, which can be abrasive on tooth enamel, they use bentonite clay powders, which rank only a 1 or 2 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
The 6-month supply comes in mini glass mason jars.
They also make traditional toothpaste, but these contain beeswax (not vegan friendly) and come in a traditional toothpaste tubes made of plastic, which we obviously don’t consider to be sustainable toothpaste packaging.
About The Dirt
The Dirt, a local Los Angeles based oral care company, focuses on “super natural personal care” and started because founder Shannon Drake was dissatisfied with the greenwashing of supposedly “natural” toothpaste.
The Dirt aims to make products so healthy we could eat them.
The Dirt’s low-waste toothpaste and mouthwash are all cruelty-free, free of soy, corn, and gluten and filled with organic ingredients wherever possible.
There’s no mention of palm oil derivatives in their ingredients list and their sustainable toothpaste is USA made.
Sustainable Toothpaste With Fluoride
etee
etee’s Sustainable Toothpaste With Fluoride
Joining the many zero waste stores in Toronto, etee’s kicks plastic and more specifically dental waste to the curb with their eco-friendly toothpaste with fluoride.
You still get many of the same ingredients as their traditional chew paste (Canadian glacial clay, kaolin clay, and sulfate-free foaming agents)—only this time, you get a bit of sodium fluoride too.
It’s not for everyone but if you do need a sustainable toothpaste with an added cavity-fighting ingredient, this is it.
About etee
etee isn’t only one of the most sustainable toothpaste brands—they’re one of the most sustainable zero waste online stores, period, with a wide range of zero waste home and personal care essentials.
What we love about them is that they make (almost) every product they sell, from dish soap refills to an eco-friendly electric toothbrush.
Most personal care products are vegan, but they do also sell non-vegan beeswax wraps (their OG product) and soaps in compostable beeswax pods.
Every etee product that is delivered to your house is 100% plastic-free and their factory is powered by renewable energy.
My Personal Review of etee’s Chewpaste Toothpaste Tablets:
“I’ve been using etee’s toothpaste tablets on and off over the past year, and they’ve been my go-to every time I travel. They foam up super well and have helped keep my tooth sensitivity down. I wasn’t sure about the vanilla-mint combo at first, but it soon grew on me, and now I love that these have a more subtle flavor than regular mint toothpaste.”

The Humble Co.
Humble Co’s Sustainable Toothpaste Tablets
Like some other brands, Humble Co. makes their toothpaste zero waste by condensing it into concentrated, super portable tablets that make for the perfect biodegradable travel toothpaste.
These tablets come in two different varieties—with fluoride and fluoride-free—but share ingredients like mentha leaf oil, baking soda, kaolin clay, hydrates silica, and calcium carbonate.
When it comes to fluoride, eco-friendly toothpaste, dentist-approved Humble Co uses a fluoride content of 1450 PPM, which is the recommended amount by dental professionals.
The tablets are packaged in a recyclable or compostable cardboard container.
The tablets are FDA-registered and certified cruelty-free, though they do contain magnesium stearate, which can be palm-derived, so we’ll be checking on Humble Co.’s palm oil policy.
About Humble Co.
Sweden-based Humble Co. is a company that is committed to reducing waste and plastic pollution.
In addition to sustainably packaged toothpaste, they also offer sustainable toothbrushes and floss picks as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional oral care products.
They source their materials responsibly and manufacture in ethical facilities in China.
Humble also donates a portion of its profits to support oral health projects for children in need around the world via the Humble Smile Foundation.
My Personal Review of Humble Co.’s Toothpaste Tablets:
“I’ve been using Humble Co.’s Toothpaste Tablets, and I really like the convenience and eco-friendly approach. They’re easy to pop in and foam up nicely, leaving my teeth feeling clean without the mess or waste of traditional tubes. The minty taste is fresh but not overpowering and doesn’t linger in my mouth too long after brushing. I especially appreciate that these aren’t just a plastic-free toothpaste but a totally compostable one. Whereas many come in glass jars, these leave no leftover packaging in the end.”

Georganics
Georganics’ Eco-Friendly Toothpaste With Fluoride
Like the fluoride-free toothpaste we talked about earlier, Georganics’ eco-friendly fluoride toothpaste is out to keep your smile naturally beautiful.
The formulas between these versions are much the same—COSMOS-certified organic plant oils, baking soda, and calcium carbonate—as are all the toxic and synthetic ingredients you won’t find.
These include vegetable glycerin, palm oil, and SLS.
We’ve tried out the fluoridated version of Georganics’ eco toothpaste and are especially fond of the charcoal version for its extra whitening properties.
Despite the fact that these are designed to be a non-foaming formula, the toothpaste spreads through the mouth easily and our chompers are left feeling just as clean (if not cleaner!) than with traditional foaming toothpaste.
In fact, the non-foaming formula is perfect for those who find themselves gagging on the excessive amount of foam of SLS-based traditional toothpaste.
About Georganics
For more on this sustainable toothpaste UK brand, see our coverage of Georganic’s fluoride-free toothpaste options above.
Unpaste
Unpaste’s Sustainable Toothpaste
Unpaste dares you to “replace your paste” with these convenient and highly portable zero waste toothpaste tablets.
Just bite, wet your bamboo electric toothbrush, and brush the bacteria away in two minutes.
These plastic-free toothpaste tabs contain no preservatives, GMOs, gluten, dyes, palm oil, aluminum or nanoparticles, foaming agents, SLS, paraffin, or other petroleum based products.
Instead, you’ll find a vegan and cruelty-free formula made of microfine polishing cellulose, baking soda, and silica in a mildly minty flavor.
While the original version does contain fluoride, they also have a fluoride free option.
There are 125 tabs in each waste-free toothpaste package made of compostable non-GMO corn starch printed with organic ink—basically the closest thing to no packaging toothpaste possible.
About Unpaste
Unpaste’s goal is “to provide the best possible dental care using the least amount of chemical ingredients possible, with no waste”.
They only make sustainable zero waste toothpaste, and they’ve been wildly successful at doing exactly that.
You can now find Unpaste in tons of sustainable online retailers, as well as in zero waste brick-and-mortar shops around the U.S.
While they’re most commonly found in the States, these tabs are made entirely in Germany and certified by all German organizations, including Aktion-zahnfreundlich e.V. as safe and effective and BDIH as all-natural.
Germany’s certifiers are arguably stricter than US organizations like the USDA and FDA. In other words, you know you’re getting gute sachen.
Plus, they “only use safe natural ingredients and only from countries with strong labor laws”.
The Good Company
The Good Company’s Sustainable Toothpaste Australia
The Good Company offers a range of toothpaste tablets that come in a reusable glass jar.
These tablets are made with natural and organic ingredients, including detoxifying coconut oil baking soda, gum soothing aloe leaf juice, and xylitol, a natural sweetener that helps to prevent tooth decay.
Choose between plain mint or mint charcoal.
Within each of these, you can also choose between zero waste fluoride toothpaste or that with nHAp+ (positively charged nano-hydroxyapatite).
Both kinds are free of SLS, artificial flavors, and other harmful chemicals.
Not only is the toothpaste eco-friendly, but easy to use. Simply chew a tablet, brush your teeth, and rinse. The tablets are perfectly portioned, so you don’t have to worry about using too much or too little.
About The Good Company
The Good Company is “on a mission to build the world’s most sustainable oral care company”.
They’re getting there by only using natural and organic ingredients in their products, and sourcing these ingredients from sustainable and ethical suppliers.
While initial orders of their toothpaste tablets come in a reusable glass jar, they also offer a refill program, so you can refill your jar instead of buying a new one. Refills come in a home compostable plant-based PLA pouch.
Exterior packaging is mindfully chosen, too. Through a partnership with Hero Packaging, they deliver products in fully compostable bubble mailers that are safe for your indoor compost bin.
In addition to their commitment to sustainability, this Certified B Corp is also committed to ethical business practices.
How We Found The Best Plastic-Free Toothpaste Brands
So what is sustainable toothpaste?
Does it refer to the packaging? Or what happens to the toothpaste after we spit the suds down the drain? Is toothpaste biodegradable?
If this is your first time visiting, our approach to ethical and sustainable beauty is to look for brands and products that are:
- Non-toxic: The best sustainable toothpaste is good for the planet AND you, down to the ingredients. This means no common traditional toothpaste nasties like triclosan, SLS, propylene glycol, artificial flavors and sweeteners, dyes, DEA, or parabens.
- Vegan and Cruelty Free: We don’t know about you, but we really don’t want to be swishing anything from an animal around in our mouths, which is why we seek vegan eco-friendly toothpaste.
- Palm oil free: Palm oil free toothpaste is ideal, but if it is used, it needs to be RSPO (or equivalent) certified.
- Ethical ingredient sourcing
- Thoughtful packaging: Ideally, we look for no-plastic toothpaste in compostable or biodegradable packaging, but zero waste also entails packaging that is reusable (read more in our deep dive on glass vs plastic).
Sustainable Toothpaste With Fluoride Vs Without Fluoride
Ah, the great debate about toothpaste… Are natural options good or bad for you ultimately?
Should your toothpaste contain fluoride or not?
The answer is deeply personal based on your teeth, your health and your background (and your dentist’s advice).
On one hand, it’s a little sus that fluoride is put in everything from toothpaste to tap water, without much conclusive evidence to show it’s beneficial in any way.
Some studies have even suggested it disrupts endocrine systems like phthalates and is a human developmental neurotoxicant, decreasing intelligence in children much the same as other toxic metals (lead, methylmercury, arsenic). But is zero waste toothpaste good for your teeth without fluoride?
It sure can be! Many use mineral hydroxyapatite (which naturally occurs in the body) is one of the best things a brand can add to their toothpaste to give it remineralizing, enamel-protecting properties, sans fluoride.
Enamel strength also differs from person to person, depending on things like genetics and diet, so for some, zero waste fluoride toothpaste is unnecessary.
If you’re on the fence, it’s never a bad idea to discuss this with your dentist, as they’ll be able to provide a recommendation based on your mouth’s particular needs.
FAQ: Eco-Friendly Toothpaste
What makes a toothpaste sustainable?
As mentioned above, there are a few considerations but in a nutshell, a toothpaste is considered sustainable when it uses minimal or recycled packaging (ideally plastic-free or compostable), natural or non-toxic ingredients, transparent sourcing, reduction of single-use plastic, and supports eco-friendly manufacturing and end-of-life disposal.
Why should I switch to a zero-waste or eco friendly toothpaste?
Lots of reasons but again, in summary, conventional plastic toothpaste tubes contribute significantly to landfill and plastic pollution (over 1 billion tubes per year, per the article). Switching to zero-waste alternatives helps reduce plastic waste, avoid harmful ingredients, and support brands designed for lower environmental impact.
Are sustainable toothpaste tablets or powders effective?
Yes—many brands featured use tablet or powder formats (rather than conventional paste) and still maintain cleaning, remineralising or whitening benefits. The key is choosing a trusted brand with effective ingredients and eco-friendly format.
Does sustainable toothpaste mean fluoride-free?
Not always. Some sustainable toothpaste brands offer both fluoride and fluoride-free versions. The focus is on packaging and ingredient transparency rather than automatically excluding fluoride.
What packaging features should I look for when buying sustainable toothpaste?
Look for packaging that is plastic-free, compostable, refillable, or made from recyclable materials like glass or metal. Tablets in paper or cardboard packaging and reusable jars are examples recommended in the article.
Final Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Toothpaste Brands
Plastic packaging free toothpaste hasn’t always been this easy to find. In fact, for a long time there were no sustainable toothpaste tablets at all.
Thankfully, you can now find zero waste tooth tabs, toothpowder, paste, and more with a quick search. The trick is trying to find options that are not only good for you, but better for the environment, down to the natural ingredients in each recipe.
By ditching your conventional toothpaste tube and supporting one of these sustainable toothpaste brands (and encouraging friends to do the same by sharing this list), you can do just that.

How many of these are available in India ? This would really help.
Good question, I’m afraid we haven’t done a deep dive into what zero waste toothpaste is available in India yet as most of our readers are in the US but hopefully we can start doing more country specific deep dives at some stage as it is important to limit those transport emissions! Do let me know if you find anything that ticks the boxes in India!
Hey Ritu, The Good Company ships worldwide! Hope that helps 🙂 This is their website: http://www.choosegood.com.au
Great list! I love the color palettes you’ve put beside every product to show its features. Seeing so many options for plastic-free toothpastes makes me happy that a lot of people in the world are trying to save the environment. But don’t forget about Poppits toothpaste pods, they offer plastic free toothpastes as well and their product is kid-friendly and convenient.

What about Smile Natural Products? Black owned, vegan, nontoxic, plastic free packaging.
You replied to everyone else but this. I’m certainly no pc/sjw person, but I did find it rude there was no comment to this, considering someone might have liked your opinion, although I hope they ignored you skipping over it and tried the product.
BTW, I have no affiliation to this product whatsoever, never even heard of it till now- but I am going to look for it!
Hi Carrie, we’re just trying to keep up with comments and didn’t have anything to say about Smile Natural Products (we haven’t looked into them), very happy for others to comment if others have had experience with this brand.
Is there a definition of “thoughtful packaging” somewhere here? My main intention is to avoid plastic of any kind. Thoughtful packaging is not a definitive statement about whether plastic is used.
Thanks for your info!
Hi John, this particular article is about zero waste toothpaste so all the toothpastes are plastic free.
Generally, you can find our definitions in this article however if you’re looking for plastic free specifically, take a look at our zero waste specific articles.
What about Smile Natural Products? Black owned, vegan, nontoxic, plastic free packaging.
I just bought a subscription for toothpaste tabs from Bite. On the checklist you provided you didn’t checkmark ethical sourcing. I checked their website and couldn’t find anything. Would you recommend not purchasing through them then or just check with them and see what they say? Or do you have more information about it?(:
Hi Lily, Thanks for visiting! That question mark for Bite just means we’ve never heard back from them to confirm their policies on sourcing. So the truth is we just don’t know – like you, we couldn’t find anything on their website and they haven’t replied to our email. Our usual process is to reach out to them and remove them from our list if, after a few months, they still haven’t replied. So it’s up to you whether you still want to buy from them – my personal view would be that they’re doing a pretty good job and if you like the product, you should just shoot them an email and ask them if you’re concerned about ingredient sourcing. Let us know if you hear anything!
Thank you so much for useful post.
And for sharing in-depth information
Eco Easy (now called PopCare/PopPack) now ships internationally, and claims to be palm oil free
Thanks Harry! I have been trying to get in touch with Eco Easy/Popcare to confirm exactly this. Hoping to hear back soon. Thanks heaps for the recommendation, so useful to hear from readers!
Very complete and informative. Thank you!
Thanks Phil, glad you find it useful!
All this info on packaging and such but no ingredient lists? That’s kind of key to picking a product because you have to know if it’s safe for you.
Totally agree Kat! We try to cover a lot of ground and try to information on ingredients but given this is a quick summary we don’t list all the ingredients for every brand we find. They are usually very easily accessible from the brand’s website directly or in most online store listings.
