Low waste living makes us smile—so where better to start than with zero waste toothpaste?

Every year, one billion plastic toothpaste tubes end up in landfills, where they take forever to biodegrade. Whether you’re pro or anti-fluoride, we can at least all agree that when it comes to toothpaste, plastic-free is the way to go. That’s why—even if it sounds cheesy—we can’t wait to say “Cheese!” with the sustainable toothpaste brands taking a huge bite out of plastic waste.

To find the shiniest brands for our pearly whites, we considered ingredients (read: no traditional toothpaste nasties), sourcing, packaging, and brands that are vegan and cruelty free.

As we freshen up our articles over the next few months, we’ll be rolling out our sparkly new Brand Rating System covering 22 criteria from circularity and climate action to animal welfare and pollution. For more details, check out our explainer here.

We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.

Huppy’s Sustainable Toothpaste Tabs

Huppy’s vegan zero waste toothpaste was the end result from over 100 formula iterations to create one of the best eco-friendly toothpastes around.

Filled with pro-tooth antibacterial and whitening ingredients like coconut oil, tea tree oil, and Xylitol sweetener, you’ll find no sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), GMOs, sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, or artificial dyes.

Instead of fluoride, the mineral hydroxyapatite works to protect teeth from plaque and remineralize enamel.

These tablets are available in peppermint, charcoal mint (for plastic-free teeth whitening properties), watermelon strawberry, and cool mint flavors.

You can either buy once or subscribe for a four-month supply (248 tablets).

For the latter, you save 33%, receive an additional aluminum travel case, and get compostable refills delivered right to your door.

About Huppy

Huppy is here to “do good, give back, and leave the world a whole lot brighter”—not to mention doing the same to your teeth.

100% vegan and cruelty-free, they use only sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients.

All packaging is compostable or recyclable, complete with water-based ink labels, and 2% of their revenue is donated to various sustainability initiatives.

My Personal Review of Huppy’s Toothpaste Tablets:

“I’ve tried countless natural toothpastes, but Huppy’s tablets are by far the most foamy of all. They’ve definitely become a personal favorite. There’s just something about that rich foam that makes my teeth feel extra clean. Plus, they’re really easy to use, travel-friendly, and the flavor is just right—subtle and not too overpowering.”

Georganics

Georganics’ Eco-Friendly Toothpaste UK

Georganics offers some of the most sustainable toothpaste with no fluoride, SLS, palm oil (or derivatives), or glycerin.

It features calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate bases, said to be rich in enamel-strengthening minerals that reduce tooth sensitivity.

Choose between ginger, red mandarin, tea tree, English peppermint, spearmint, and pure flavors.

For toothpaste not in a tube, you can find theirs in reusable glass jars with a bamboo spatula for application.

You can also buy sets of environmentally friendly toothpaste bites, oil-pulling mouthwash, and zero waste floss.

About Georganics

UK-based sustainable toothpaste company Georganics specializes in vegan, organic, zero waste dental care.

Beyond toothpaste, they also make oil pulling mouthwashes, bamboo floss, dental supplements, and travel-handy zero waste mouthwash tabs, which are perfect for life on the go.

All products come in biodegradable or reusable packaging and are made to order in England using many locally sourced ingredients.

When you empty their plastic-free toothpaste, UK residents can return any Georganics products and components at no cost as part of their “Zero To Landfill scheme”.

Their products are cruelty-free and vegan except for their silk floss which is “obtained only once the worms have hatched and cocoons are vacant”.

They also support The Ocean Cleanup‘s efforts to reduce plastic waste.

SuperBee

SuperBee’s Plastic-Free Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth

SuperBee offers sustainable toothpaste without baking soda, which is also vegan, cruelty-free, and made with natural ingredients—including sorbitol, spearmint oil, menthol, mannitol, plant-based magnesium stearate, coconut SLS, and 1% PVP.

Their spearmint Dentos toothpaste tablets come in a reusable pack and are fluoride-free, talc-free, sugar-free, and palm oil-free.

But if you’re looking for an eco-friendly toothpaste for sensitive teeth, the spearmint flavor is specially designed to be sensitive tooth-friendly.

Just chew each tab into a paste, then brush away the plaque, germs, and bad breath.

We can confirm that these work super well and actually foam a bit better than other toothpaste tabs we’ve tried thanks to the coconut-based non-toxic SLS in the formula.

And because there’s no baking soda, it’s very gentle on both the mouth tissue and gums. We haven’t noticed any canker sores since we’ve been using this toothpaste.

Each pack contains 100 tablets, which equates to approximately three months of toothpaste for one person.

About SuperBee

Committed to sustainability and ethical business practices, SuperBee uses only natural and organic ingredients in their products—which also includes beeswax wraps, reusable bags, paper towel alternatives, and bamboo straws—and their packaging is plastic-free, reusable, and recyclable.

Bee-yond that, SuperBee is a Certified B Corp and social enterprise that empowers local communities in Thailand by providing training and employment opportunities for wages 20% higher than the local living wage.

Because volunteer firefighers there often have to work in their own clothes, SuperBee helps provide them with equipment, food, and water.

The Dirt

The Dirt’s Plastic-Free Powdered Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth

The Dirt’s minimalist tooth powders—available in sweet spice orange or super mint—are vegan and paleo, and sans fluoride, glycerin, or GMO-derived Xylitol.

Instead of baking soda, which can be abrasive on tooth enamel, they use bentonite clay powders, which rank only a 1 or 2 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

The 6-month supply comes in mini glass mason jars.

They also make traditional toothpaste, but these contain beeswax (not vegan friendly) and come in a traditional toothpaste tubes made of plastic, which we obviously don’t consider to be sustainable toothpaste packaging.

About The Dirt

The Dirt, a local Los Angeles based oral care company, focuses on “super natural personal care” and started because founder Shannon Drake was dissatisfied with the greenwashing of supposedly “natural” toothpaste.

The Dirt aims to make products so healthy we could eat them.

The Dirt’s low-waste toothpaste and mouthwash are all cruelty-free, free of soy, corn, and gluten and filled with organic ingredients wherever possible.

There’s no mention of palm oil derivatives in their ingredients list and their sustainable toothpaste is USA made.

Scentcerae

ScentCerae’s Zero Waste Toothpaste With Bentonite Clay

ScentCerae’s vegan sustainable toothpaste is made of a natural blend of ingredients: bentonite clay, white kaolin clay, illite sea clay, sodium bicarbonate, natural soap nuts, and organic xylitol.

Some potentially harmful things you won’t find in these zero waste toothpaste tablets—AKA Tooth Nibs—include: fluoride, titanium dioxide, glycerine, SLS, artificial flavors, dyes, and triclosan.

To better protect tooth enamel, there are also no abrasive fillers. Sodium bicarbonate is the closest equivalent and still ranks low on Moh’s hardness scale.

Each jar comes with 80 nibs and a choice between four naturally-derived flavors: Cinnamon Roll, Mint Chocolate Chip, Matcha Mint, and Strawberry Champagne.

Your first order will come in a compact and convenient waterproof tin while subsequent orders come in paper toothpaste refill envelopes.

About ScentCerae

ScentCerae is owned, operated, and partially named after a woman with a passion for sustainability and travel. Sherae started the company while living in Asia for 7 years as an expat.

She makes a full line of natural skincare, haircare, and other personal care items in a zero waste lab using ethically and locally (where possible) sourced ingredients.

Aside from selling them online, she hosts pop-up shops as she travels. Some of her products are even offered in certain hair salons and dental offices (yes this is dentist approved zero waste toothpaste).

ScentCerae regularly donates to Kiva and Hope Projects and participates in monthly plastic clean-ups along the river of their local Audubon.

Sustainable Toothpaste With Fluoride

etee’s Sustainable Toothpaste With Fluoride

Joining the many zero waste stores in Toronto, etee’s kicks plastic and more specifically dental waste to the curb with their eco-friendly toothpaste with fluoride.

You still get many of the same ingredients as their traditional chew paste (Canadian glacial clay, kaolin clay, and sulfate-free foaming agents)—only this time, you get a bit of sodium fluoride too.

It’s not for everyone but if you do need a sustainable toothpaste with an added cavity-fighting ingredient, this is it.

About etee

etee isn’t only one of the most sustainable toothpaste brands—they’re one of the most sustainable zero waste online stores, period, with a wide range of zero waste home and personal care essentials.

What we love about them is that they make (almost) every product they sell, from dish soap refills to an eco-friendly electric toothbrush.

Most personal care products are vegan, but they do also sell non-vegan beeswax wraps (their OG product) and soaps in compostable beeswax pods.

Every etee product that is delivered to your house is 100% plastic-free and their factory is powered by renewable energy.

The Humble Co.

Humble Co’s Sustainable Toothpaste Tablets

Like some other brands, Humble Co. makes their toothpaste zero waste by condensing it into concentrated, super portable tablets that make for the perfect biodegradable travel toothpaste.

These tablets come in two different varieties—with fluoride and fluoride-free—but share ingredients like mentha leaf oil, baking soda, kaolin clay, hydrates silica, and calcium carbonate.

When it comes to fluoride eco-friendly toothpaste, dentist approved Humble Co uses a fluoride content of 1450 PPM, which is the recommended amount by dental professionals.

The tablets are packaged in a recyclable or compostable cardboard container.

The tablets are FDA-registered and certified cruelty-free, though they do contain magnesium stearate, which can be palm derived, so we’ll be checking on Humble Co.’s palm oil policy.

We’ve also tried these tablets and while they’re on par with other tooth tablets in performance, we especially appreciate that these aren’t just a plastic-free packaging toothpaste, but a totally compostable one. Whereas many come in glass jars, these leave no leftover packaging in the end.

About Humble Co.

Sweden-based Humble Co. is a company that is committed to reducing waste and plastic pollution.

In addition to sustainably packaged toothpaste, they also offer sustainable toothbrushes and floss picks as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional oral care products.

They source their materials responsibly and manufacture in ethical facilities in China.

Humble also donates a portion of their profits to support oral health projects for children in need around the world via the Humble Smile Foundation.

Georganics

Georganics’ Eco-Friendly Toothpaste With Fluoride

Like the fluoride-free toothpaste we talked about earlier, Georganicseco-friendly fluoride toothpaste is out to keep your smile naturally beautiful.

The formulas between these versions are much the same—COSMOS-certified organic plant oils, baking soda, and calcium carbonate—as are all the toxic and synthetic ingredients you won’t find.

These include vegetable glycerin, palm oil, and SLS.

We’ve tried out the fluoridated version of Georganics’ eco toothpaste and are especially fond of the charcoal version for its extra whitening properties.

Despite the fact that these are designed to be a non-foaming formula, the toothpaste spreads through the mouth easily and our chompers are left feeling just as clean (if not cleaner!) than with traditional foaming toothpaste.

In fact, the non-foaming formula is perfect for those who find themselves gagging on the excessive amount of foam of SLS-based traditional toothpaste.

Unpaste

Unpaste’s Sustainable Toothpaste

Unpaste dares you to “replace your paste” with these convenient and highly portable zero waste toothpaste tablets.

Just bite, wet your bamboo electric toothbrush, and brush the bacteria away in two minutes.

These plastic-free toothpaste tabs contain no preservatives, GMOs, gluten, dyes, palm oil, aluminum or nanoparticles, foaming agents, SLS, paraffin, or other petroleum based products.

Instead, you’ll find a vegan and cruelty-free formula made of microfine polishing cellulose, baking soda, and silica in a mildly minty flavor.

While the original version does contain fluoride, they also have a fluoride free option.

There are 125 tabs in each waste-free toothpaste package made of compostable non-GMO corn starch printed with organic ink—basically the closest thing to no packaging toothpaste possible.

About Unpaste

Unpaste’s goal is “to provide the best possible dental care using the least amount of chemical ingredients possible, with no waste”.

They only make sustainable zero waste toothpaste, and they’ve been wildly successful at doing exactly that.

You can now find Unpaste in tons of sustainable online retailers, as well as in zero waste brick-and-mortar shops around the U.S.

While they’re most commonly found in the States, these tabs are made entirely in Germany and certified by all German organizations, including Aktion-zahnfreundlich e.V. as safe and effective and BDIH as all-natural.

Germany’s certifiers are arguably stricter than US organizations like the USDA and FDA. In other words, you know you’re getting gute sachen.

Plus, they “only use safe natural ingredients and only from countries with strong labor laws”.

The Good Company

The Good Company’s Sustainable Toothpaste Australia

The Good Company offers a range of toothpaste tablets that come in a reusable glass jar.

These tablets are made with natural and organic ingredients, including detoxifying coconut oil baking soda, gum soothing aloe leaf juice, and xylitol, a natural sweetener that helps to prevent tooth decay.

Choose between plain mint or mint charcoal.

Within each of these, you can also choose between zero waste fluoride toothpaste or that with nHAp+ (positively charged nano-hydroxyapatite).

Both kinds are free of SLS, artificial flavors, and other harmful chemicals.

Not only is the toothpaste eco-friendly, but easy to use. Simply chew a tablet, brush your teeth, and rinse. The tablets are perfectly portioned, so you don’t have to worry about using too much or too little.

About The Good Company

The Good Company is “on a mission to build the world’s most sustainable oral care company”.

They’re getting there by only using natural and organic ingredients in their products, and sourcing these ingredients from sustainable and ethical suppliers.

While initial orders of their toothpaste tablets come in a reusable glass jar, they also offer a refill program, so you can refill your jar instead of buying a new one. Refills come in a home compostable plant-based PLA pouch.

Exterior packaging is mindfully chosen, too. Through a partnership with Hero Packaging, they deliver products in fully compostable bubble mailers that are safe for your indoor compost bin.

In addition to their commitment to sustainability, this Certified B Corp is also committed to ethical business practices.

While there are palm-derived ingredients, they come from certified sustainable sources.

Each order supplies you for four months, and when it’s time for a refill, you can bypass the original glass jars in favor of compostable paper pouch refills.

About Mintly

“Eco or hell no”: that’s the Mintly motto.

In addition to their zero waste toothpaste, Mintly also offers other sustainable oral care products, such as bamboo toothbrushes and floss.

As a brand, they prioritize eco-friendly packaging in every regard—down to the easy-to-remove labels printed with minimal ink.
