Ethical sourcing of ingredients, cruelty-free and vegan formulations, and eco-packaging to name a few sustainable makeup ideas and considerations. And that’s exactly what we’re curating in this list for you. Brands ticking all those green beauty boxes (and more).
Note: Our brand rating system assesses brands based on multiple sustainability-related criteria, including things like product safety, chemical use and biodiversity impact. Brands need to opt in to be rated. Look out for rated brands below and find others in our directory.

Axiology
Axiology’s Clean Makeup
Price Range: $–$$
Axiology is one of the best sustainable makeup brands, self-described as “100% evil free,” referring to their strict policy against the likes of palm oil and animal testing.
Many of their ingredients (e.g. castor oil, sunflower oil) are organic and all are 100% safe, non-toxic, and nano-particle free.
They recently did away with tubes of lipstick and now offer only cardboard push tubes of color creams or multi-use “lip-to-lid” Balmies.
These lipstick crayons contain no unnecessary packaging (just a little paper wrapping) and can be used for eyes and cheeks, too.
About Axiology
As an ethical cosmetics brand, Axiology has exceptional sustainability credentials.
Their cruelty-free makeup is certified by PETA and ingredients are sourced ethically.
For example, shea butter and moringa oils are fair trade, and their mica is sourced from a supplier that supports Made in a Free World.
Outer sustainable packaging comes from a woman-owned recycled-paper boutique in Indonesia.
In addition to not using palm oil, Axiology provides support to the Orangutan Foundation International, which rehabilitates endangered animals after being displaced by palm oil industry logging.
My Personal Review of Axiology’s Makeup:
“I’ve been a massive fan of Axiology’s Multi-Sticks and Balmies for ages. They’re filled with simple, nourishing ingredients, and I love how versatile they are for adding color to lips, cheeks, and eyes.
I also just tried out one of their latest goodies, the Shape Stick. If you’re like me and find contouring a bit tricky, these sticks are a game-changer! They’re super creamy and blend like a dream, making it really easy to add a hint of shape to your face without any fuss.”

Antonym
Antonym’s Cosmetics
Price Range: $$
Unwilling to compromise performance by eliminating chemicals, Antonym proves gentle ingredients can achieve fierce looks.
Just ask some of the brand’s wearers: Elizabeth Bank, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, and Keira Knightley—to name a few.
Their Ecocert-certified organic and natural eco-friendly makeup is for:
- Face (blush, liquid, and powder foundation): Their Skin Esteem foundations are made of 99% natural ingredients.
- Eyes (eyeshadow, eyebrow pencils, mascara, eye pencils)
Everything is Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free and vegan—including their makeup brushes and applicators.
Sensitive skin-friendly, you’ll never find parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic oils, artificial fragrances, GMOs, petrochemicals, fillers, mineral oils, and preservatives.
Mineral mica is used, but we are unsure of their sourcing policies.
About Antonym
Antonym is an ethical and sustainable makeup brand in the US—with a little French flair.
The founder, Valerie Giraud, was born in France, where some beauty products are manufactured (along with Italy and the Czech Republic).
These clean cosmetics contain roughly 99%+ natural ingredients (11%+ of which are certified organic)., but they do use palm oil, for which they don’t specify sourcing policies.
When it comes to packaging sustainability, Antonym only uses bamboo compacts or glass bottles, and the outer packaging is made of recycled materials or FSC-certified paper.
My Personal Review of Antonym’s Makeup:
“I was a little skeptical when I received Antonym’s Liquid Lipstick, which looks like the tubes of lip gloss I used to wear in excess back in middle school (2007, amiright?). But I now love this product. Though it looks like a lipgloss, it packs all the bold coloration of a much cakier lipstick in a smooth and moisturizing formula. I own four different colors of this now and love it, even when I’m not leaving my house. Because sometimes, a girl just needs a little lip tint to feel like her best self!”
“Antonym’s Lola Lash Too Mascara is my go-to for bold, dramatic lashes. The formula adds impressive volume and length without clumping or flaking, and the rich black color really makes my eyes pop. I love that it’s long-lasting but easy to remove (but not waterproof, so no tears!), and it feels lightweight on my lashes.
“I’m also super impressed with Antonym’s Baked Blush. The pigment is truly stunning, delivering a natural flush of color with a subtle shimmer that brightens up my complexion beautifully. I especially love its luxe, durable bamboo compact.”

RMS Beauty
RMS Beauty’s Cosmetics
Price Range: $$
RMS Beauty is one of our favorite ethical makeup companies for a few reasons.
They’re 100% cruelty-free, palm oil-free, and utilize mostly organic, raw, and/or food-grade ingredients. These are largely plant-based, but a few are not vegan.
Joining the best pregnancy safe makeup brands, you’ll never see soy, silicone, GMOs, parabens, or nanoparticle minerals in their range of products for:
- Face (primer, foundation, concealer, bronzer, and more)
- Lips (lip paint, stick, tint, gloss, and pencils)
- Eyes (mascara, eye and brow pencils, eyeshadow)
- Skin (face oils and makeup remover)
About RMS Beauty
Founder and brand namesake Rose-Marie Swift worked in the beauty industry for decades and eventually decided something needed to change.
RMS Beauty was the result, bringing their ethical cosmetics brand philosophy to big-name beauty circles.
They’re also one of several sustainable makeup brands at Sephora that are denoted as Clean at Sephora.
They source organic ingredients from ethical channels–especially their mica in makeup—and house everything in recyclable or reusable packaging. Any cardboard is made using wind energy.
To aid victims of sex trafficking, they support Doors to Freedom, as well as environmental charities like Sea Shepherd.
Elate Cosmetics
Elate Cosmetics Makeup
Price Range: $–$$
A completely ethical makeup brand, Elate Beauty offers a large range of eco-friendly cosmetics “that don’t compromise the health of any person, animal or the planet”.
Their Leaping Bunny-certified, PETA-approved vegan, and gluten-free range includes:

- Face makeup (foundation, powder, concealer, blush, highlighter, bronzer)

About Elate Cosmetics
An eco-friendly makeup brand from Canada, Elate’s zero waste beauty products are housed in reusable, fair trade, FSC-certified bamboo.
These can then be easily refilled with new products that come in a seed paper pouch. Just wet the pouch and plant it in your garden to grow herbs and wildflowers.
They join the small club of fair trade makeup brands and prioritize fair trade sourcing over organic ingredients—which is why you’ll see about 10% of their ingredients aren’t organically certified.
The Green Business Association member and Certified B Corp also donates 1% of profits to social charities, 1% to environmental initiatives, plants a tree with every order, and offsets carbon emissions.
100% Pure
100% Pure’s Makeup
Price Range: $$
100% Pure makes vegan, cruelty-free, and natural makeup products as well as makeup brushes out of recycled PBT plastic bottles.
This environmentally friendly makeup brand’s Fruit Pigmented makeup line covers:
- Face (primer, foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, highlighter)
- Eyes (organic eyeshadow, liner, mascara, brow products): Check out their Berry Naked palette for a mix of bold and skin-subtle colors to create the perfect look for any occasion.
- Lips (sticks, glosses, tints).
- Palettes
- Non-toxic nail polish
Because safe makeup brands shouldn’t use nano-particles or synthetic colors, 100% Pure doesn’t either, though some products contain sustainably sourced palm oil.
Most sustainable packaging (post-consumer recycled glass, plastic, tin, and paper) is recyclable either through their in-store recycling program or in curbside recycling bins.
If you participate in in-store recycling, you’ll receive a free trial-size product.
About 100% Pure
100% Pure prioritizes corporate responsibility, change, and transparency, using ingredients sourced using an Ethical Trade Initiative base code.
With even the most ethical makeup brands, mica sourcing can be a topic of contention, but 100% has nothing to hide:
“It’s produced in the most ethical and safe way possible. The mill, located in Andhra Pradesh, is a modern, high-tech facility that never utilizes child labor and holds product quality to exceptional standards.”
Most products are made in the USA and everything ships in recyclable materials with compostable cornstarch packing peanuts.
100% Pure’s head office is 100% solar-powered, and they’re working to become Climate Positive and use entirely plastic-free packaging.
My Personal Review of 100% Pure’s Creamy Long Last Liner:
“Available in kohl black, dark brown, and shimmery silver, 100% Pure’s eyeliner pencil is a must-have. I toss it in my bag for quick touch-ups on the go. Plus, it’s packed with healthy ingredients like jojoba oil, shea butter, marula oil, sunflower oil, and vitamin E to keep my skin happy. Just a heads up: it won’t stick around all day like those chemical eye pencils, but I’ve found that popping a little foundation powder underneath and on top does the trick for a longer-lasting look.”

My Personal Review of Juice Beauty’s Luminous Lip Crayon:
“I tested the Luminous Lip Crayon in Laguna Pink Mauve and love how it glides on super smooth and colors my lips without a cakey look or chemical taste. I can also confidently say that, unlike most traditional lipsticks, it leaves my lips feeling plumper and more moisturized. No need for a separate lip balm—this formula takes care of it all.”

How We Found The Best Sustainable Makeup Brands
From the first layer of vegan foundation to the natural makeup remover we use when it’s time to take our look off, we want everything we use to come from sustainable and safe makeup brands.
But what makeup brands are eco-friendly and how did we sift through the plastic and petrochemicals to ensure only they ended up in our sustainable makeup bag?
We pulled out our handheld mirror to check our ethical and sustainable beauty criteria to find the most ethical makeup brands and products that are:
- Cruelty Free and Vegan: No animal byproducts, including in our vegan makeup brushes. Exceptions we sometimes make are beeswax and honey, but we’ll still always tag these as not vegan. And animals don’t wear makeup, so we shouldn’t test it on them.
- Non-toxic: Given the plethora of ingredients to avoid in skin care, organic ingredients are ideal and natural ones are next, but on the occasion that brands use something synthetic, it must be non-toxic.
- Palm oil free: Some exceptions are made for those using organic or RSPO palm oil.
- Ethical sourcing: With ethical makeup brands, mica is something to especially pay attention to. Being a mineral that requires mining, it’s often associated with child and forced labor, so we look for brands that source this mineral ethically.
Thoughtful packaging: See ya, single-use plastic tube of lipstick. For us, the most eco-friendly makeup brands are zero waste makeup brands, meaning they use reusable, refillable, compostable, and/or plastic-free packaging.
FAQ: Sustainable Cosmetics
What qualifies a makeup brand as a “sustainable makeup brand”?
As we detailed above, it’s a fair few things that makeup (excuse the pun) a makeup brand worthy of that title! It’s a brand that takes into account its environmental and social impact across the lifecycle of its products. This includes using eco-friendly ingredients (e.g., plant-based, minimal synthetic chemicals), cruelty-free and vegan formulations, ethically sourced raw materials, packaging that reduces plastic or uses refillable/recyclable materials, and transparent supply chains. We believe these attributes are key criteria when considering whether a brand in this space is actually sustainable.
Why is “eco friendly makeup” important?
Eco friendly makeup matters because the cosmetics industry contributes significant waste (e.g., the ~120 billion units of plastic packaging produced annually) and uses ingredients that may be harmful to human health or the environment. Choosing products from sustainable makeup brands helps reduce plastic waste, supports safer ingredient use, and promotes ethical sourcing and production.
How can I identify genuine sustainable or ethical beauty products?
Look for certifications such as Leaping Bunny (for cruelty free), The Vegan Society (for vegan formulations), FSC-certified or compostable packaging, and clear information from the brand about ingredient sourcing and transparency. We vet each brand featured to ensure their sustainability credentials are credible.
Are sustainable makeup brands more expensive?
Not necessarily, but many sustainable makeup brands may have higher price points due to higher-quality ingredients, small-batch production, ethical supply-chains, and eco-friendly packaging. That said, many brands listed here span a range of price tiers so there are options for different budgets.
Does switching to a sustainable makeup brand really make a difference?
Yes — by choosing brands with strong sustainability credentials you contribute to reduced plastic packaging, support clean-and-ethical ingredient sourcing, and promote better labour and environmental practices. Over time, as more consumers shift to sustainable makeup brands, overall industry practices can improve.
Final Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Makeup & Skincare Brands
Beauty may only be skin deep, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay attention to what you’re applying to your skin.
Between toxic ingredients, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, and plastic pollution, the beauty industry could use a makeover. Fortunately, each sustainable makeup brand featured here is a trendsetter for better-for-earth (and you) beauty.
We’d love to see a world where sustainable cosmetics are the only cosmetics.
To help us get there, spread the word and share this article with friends who like to get a little dolled up.

Hi,
I am part of a sustainability group. I need to write an article on sustainable make-up. I will mention the list of brands in my article. Any other information you think would be interesting would be great.
Thank you,
Rose
Hi and Happy New Year!
Thank you for this content; it’s awesome.
I found another brand and wanted to share: Thrive Causemetics. I don’t know too much about them, but they seem great from what I’ve read.
thrivecausemetics.com
Thanks and take care!
Danielle
Hi Joy,
This is a great post, what a lot of research! I’m always on the look out for plastic-free or minimal waste brands in the UK for my little starter blog.
Thanks
Mandy
So happy you found it helpful Mandy!
Hiya what about The Body Shop? I hope they are ethical too.
Bethan
Hi Bethan, I originally heard some things about them that I didn’t love the sound of so didn’t bother to look further or even validate if those things were true. I also heard recently that they have new owners now and things are changing so might put some effort in to looking into them. Thanks for the prompt!
Given loreal were affiliated with the body shop between 2006 and 2017 and parted ways quite publicly given their differing ethical beliefs. TBS have been in partnership with Natura since 2017 who have shared ethical practices mentioned on the website to all consumers and a simple google search would have given you much more information. For a company in hyper growth and at the forefront of ethical beauty for 40 years the fact you have listed lush seems a somewhat weak research .
Hi Emma, thank you for your feedback. Sorry you feel that the research is weak, we only have time to work on this site on the weekends so by no means claim to have listed every ethical beauty brand. We do our best to cover a range of brands that come to our attention and like I said, TBS just wasn’t on our radar as this is the first time anyone has asked about them. Lush on the other hand has been brought to our attention time and time again by readers so we felt we had to cover them. Again like I said, we’ll look into TBS for our next update.
Hey there,
I am looking for interesting eco-friendly candidates to feature in a show I am producing for CNN.
I need to find people in vocations such as teachers, designers, engineers, artists and policeman or anyone that has adapted their career to make it a more sustainable one. It is important they have not given up their chosen career but have tweaked it to make it more sustainable and eco-friendly. People who are passionate and keen to contribute to a greener future for us all.
Do you know anyone in the region who has chosen to go down this route?
The person can be local but would have to speak good English and we would film their journey. The main hook is a person who loves their job but wanted to make it sustainable, for example I would love to find a graffiti artist who uses moss instead of toxic spray or a beautician who only uses eco-friendly products for her clients, or even makes her own products.
Best wishes,
Hi Amani,
There are so many people like that featured on our website. Can you be more specific around which region you’re referring to?
Cheers,
Joy
Where is Neal’s Yard Remedies
Hi Sonja,
Thanks for visiting, sorry about the late reply. You know, I looked at Neil’s Yard Ages ago and couldn’t find a policy on palm oil and thought a brand as big as them should be explicit about it so was a little put off and they therefore don’t feature on our site. I just had another look at their site now and it does look like they have some great initiatives so maybe I’ll look at them again. I don’t see any makeup in their range though so it doesn’t look like they’d work for this article. Do you have a product in mind in particular that you were surprised wasn’t on this list?
Thanks again for stopping by!
Joy
