About Etsy

Vintage desks are unique, look great, tell a story, and save precious resources—and Etsy is the place to find them!

They host sellers from around the world, boasting all manner of antique desks, vintage school desks, secretary desks, vintage davenports, mid-century finds, and rare writing desks.

For something more modern (but just as sustainable), there’s also a good range of reclaimed desks, too.

Etsy’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

From Maple wood to metal—there are a lot of different materials that can be found in vintage desks.

Reclaimed is another way to go. Welcome sustainable reclaimed timber into your home, with all its unique imperfections, old nail holes, and different colorations.

To save you some time, 5-star rated Doug and Cristy Designs has beautiful reclaimed writing desks while Wine and Hammer has minimalist reclaimed pine desks. Umbuzo Rustic also uses reclaimed wood, water-based sealants, and non-toxic stains.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Antique desks are great because they don’t require manufacturing. They already exist!

Many of the reclaimed wood desks are handmade by individuals or small-scale and independent businesses.

Think: slow fashion for furniture. This is why Etsy is often a good place to turn for all sorts of homewares like vintage home decor.

Green business practices:

Secondhand already makes for the best eco friendly desks.

Better still, Etsy sponsors carbon-neutral shipping on behalf of its sellers and uses 100% renewable electricity to power its operations.

About Greenington

Greenington is a sustainable furniture brand that specializes in natural materials.

For the office, they have several styles of writing desks, including one style that’s taking the world by storm as people realize how much better standing is for the back: an adjustable sustainable high-low standing desk.

Greenington’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

100% Moso bamboo goes into all of Greenington’s sustainable office desks.

The Amber, Black Walnut, and Jasmine colors come by way of an innovative staining process that uses earth-friendly pressure, steam, and heat.

All Greenington products are CARB-2 certified and low-VOC. The adhesive contains very low levels of formaldehyde.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Their desks are crafted by ISO 9001 certified factories in China, where all laborers are paid fair wages.

Green business practices:

Moso bamboo reaches maturity in just 5 years and releases 35% more oxygen (and absorbing more carbon dioxide) than similar stands of trees.

The heat used to provide the bamboo with lovely color comes from production sawdust waste used to generate the dry kiln’s steam,

All Made Trade orders are shipped 100% carbon neutral, too.

Community & charitable giving:

Ordering through Made Trade means you also get to support a contributing member of 1% for the Planet.

About What WE Make

Chicago’s What WE Make is an Etsy shop (wwmake) using environmentally-friendly materials to make finely crafted customizable furniture.

Their eco-friendly desks are made from reclaimed wood so beautiful, you might easily find yourself distracted from work by the gorgeous grains and colors.

Some desks have shelves and others come with drawers.

What WE Make’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

100+-year-old reclaimed old-growth hardwoods are finished with a VOC-free plant oil-based finish.

Choose between patchwork (a mix of reclaimed woods to create a patchwork aesthetic) and plank (reclaimed oak planks that span the entire length of the desk).

Supply chain & labor practices:

The old-growth wood is harvested from midwestern barns and will thus have beautiful variations (weathering, nail holes, knots, splits, etc.).

Then, being a family-owned-and-operated American-made furniture brand, the wood is turned into furniture by brothers Dan and George Quinn in Algonquin, IL.

Green business practices:

WWM uses sustainable manufacturing practices, like hand welding and manual woodworking techniques.

HOW WE FOUND THESE ECO FRIENDLY DESKS

You may be spending your work-from-home days in sustainable sweatpants, but sustainable and ethical fashion considerations can still make it into your 9-5!

How?

Because the things that dictate what makes ethical workout wear are pretty darn similar to those that determine the sustainability of where you work.

Here are a few things we considered when looking for eco-friendly desks.

Materials:

Desks are mostly made with wood, which is why we prefer brands that use recycled or reclaimed over new timber.

With new timber, sustainable harvesting practices are absolutely essential, especially with rosewood—which has been associated with deforestation, corruption, and illegal trade.

Quick-growing Moso bamboo is another good option (and won’t steal food source from hungry pandas!).

Mango wood is also an excellent source because it’s a byproduct of—you guessed it—the mango fruit industry.

We also look for VOC-free, low VOC and plant oil-based finishes, non-toxic stains, and water-based sealants.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Working at a desk that supports an artisan with fair wages makes 8 hours of spreadsheets better. So do sustainable production methods, carbon offset shipping, use of renewable energy local supply chains, and durable designs that will work as long as you do.

Green business practices:

When it seems like you’re becoming one with your desk, you can feel better about the fact that it was made with reclaimed materials, manufactured using renewable energy, delivered with carbon neutral shipping, or associated with donations to environmental organizations or tree planting!

FINAL THOUGHTS ON ECO FRIENDLY DESKS

You probably spend more time in your home office than you’d like to, which means more reason to fill it with products that you feel good about and keep you safe.

And as we’ve seen, there’s a wrong way and a write way to do desks.

Eco-friendly desks mean that no new trees need to be cut down, or those that are are done so in an ecologically-minded manner. They also mean significantly less off-gassing of dangerous chemicals like VOCs and formaldehyde.

More than anything, a sustainable desk is a well-made one that can be passed down for years to come. With this in mind, consider sourcing a durable desk from years past by shopping secondhand.

If you found this article helpful, feel free to share it with someone who’s about to head off to college or finally giving in to the fact that they might be working from home for a long time to come.
