Outdoor furniture is built to withstand the elements but ironically, much of it puts the planet (and people) at greater risk. Here’s why choosing ethically made, sustainable outdoor furniture matters and in this article we share a selection of brands offering more thoughtful pieces.
Choosing outdoor furniture made from FSC-certified wood or recycled plastic helps protect forests and reduce waste. Choosing well-made, weather-resistant furniture designed to last helps cut down on the millions of tons of waste that enter landfills each year. And plant-based oils, or low-VOC sealants are much better non-toxic finishes or coatings.
And that’s what we’re focusing on with this list of eco-friendly outdoor furniture brands in addition to ethical labor practices, and transparent supply chains.
Note: Our own Sustainable Brand Rating System evaluates brands (who choose to opt in) across a comprehensive set of ethical and sustainability-related criteria, including things like climate action, product circularity, and chemical use. Look out for the rated brands on the list below and find other rated brands in our directory.

Loll Designs
Price Range: $245-$10K
Loll Designs wants to make your backyard a part of the circular economy. They started using recycled post-industrial plastic for building custom municipal skate parks but quickly turned to making outdoor chairs, tables, storage units, and more—all made entirely from post-consumer plastics.
Break out a bar cart when entertaining friends and family, or choose one of their many seating options for a quiet solo sit in your backyard sanctuary.
Loll Design uses recycled plastic, particularly #2 milk jugs, for which each product uses about eight jugs. You can also recycle your outdoor furniture when it’s reached the end of its life, including the aluminum insets and stainless steel fasteners. Their material reutilization program has all the details.
For any that feature Sunbrella upholstery and foam cushions, these aren’t recycled, but Sunbrella is a hard-wearing fabric designed to withstand harsh outdoor environments.
Loll Design purchases all materials and manufactures domestically in the USA. All their HPDE products have obtained a Cradle to Cradle BRONZE™ rating.
My Personal Review of Loll Design’s Lollygagger Lounge Chair:
“I personally tested out the Lollygagger Lounge Chair, and you can now catch me hanging out in it whenever the weather allows (in fact, I’m sitting in it and writing this review right now!). The high back and backward sloped seat are very comfortable, and I especially love the wide armrests that can securely support a laptop, hold beverages, and more. The weather-proof and fade-resistant material is super sturdy, yet the whole thing is also incredibly easy to assemble. After it arrived at my door in a space-saving flat-pack form, I was able to completely assemble the chair by myself in about 30 minutes.”

Ethnicraft
Price Range: $99 – $6,859
Ethnicraft was founded in Antwerp over 25 years ago and today offers a wide range of durable outdoor furniture including outdoor dining, outdoor lounge chairs, sun loungers, and tables and outdoor accessories like cushions and rugs.
All their wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests that are compliant with the EU Timber Regulations and the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan. Some of their teak products are certified as FSC® 100%.
Cushions are OEKO-TEX 100 certified and the duck feathers they use inside are certified by Downpass. For other textiles they use cotton, wool, linen and synthetics which are made from recycled fibres and certified by GRS. Leather is certified by Blauer Engel.
Of these, we would recommend products made from solid wood (preferably the FSC certified teak) and linen as the most sustainable, though for outdoor use, the recycled synthetics may be more durable.
Products are manufactured in Serbia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, and are regularly audited to ensure compliance with labour law, human rights and ethical social, and environmental conduct.
In 2020, the brand launched Live Light which is a furniture subscription service set up to encourage more circular use of their furniture.
Yardbird
Price Range: $150–$7,400
Yardbird uses mostly recycled sustainable materials for their affordable outdoor furniture, including sofa sets, loveseats, sectionals, and tables.
This recycled plastic outdoor furniture brand uses—you guessed it— intercepted ocean plastic from especially susceptible areas in the Philippines. Their wicker sets, for example, are 64% recycled, utilizing HDPE plastic wicker combined with fade-and-water-resistant synthetic Sunbrella fabric and foam.
The frames are made from recyclable aluminum or responsibly sourced Indonesian teak wood. Outdoor wooden furniture is also made from this Indonesian sourced teak (approved under the EU as sustainably harvested wood).
Their furniture is crafted one piece at a time with materials sourced directly from suppliers in the USA, Europe, and Asia. Final assembly takes place in Vietnam, China, and the US, though they’ve never confirmed their ethical policies with us regarding these factories.
86 Vintage
Price Range: $10–$27,000
86 Vintage has one of the widest ranges of vintage garden furniture we’ve seen. While it’s more fashionable and less functional on the whole, you’ll find a curated collection of antiques, vintage items, and primitive decor to go along with your garden recycling theme – most items would look great on the patio!
Products are second hand and made from various materials, like wrought iron, steel, pine, and other woods.
Emeco
Price Range: $340–$4,930
Emeco’s first chair, the 1006 Navy, was built by hand in 1944 from recycled aluminum for Navy warships and tested to last over 150 years. If that’s not sustainable, we don’t know what is. Emeco still carries its original chair alongside benches, stools, seats, and storage units— all featuring that timeless quality that’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Putting a modern twist on a classic pastime, the Heritage Recycled Rocking Armchair will let you rock on the front porch just like your grandpa used to, with a bit of cutting-edge tech to boot.
Roughly 90% of Emeco’s products are made from recycled materials—including recycled aluminum, recycled PET, recycled wood-filled polypropylene, wood, eco-concrete, and reclaimed cork.
Emeco crafts all of its outdoor furniture at its factory in Hanover, Pennsylvania, all the way from welding to shipping. They have a chair-to-chair recycling program, where their recycled plastic and aluminum products can be recycled endlessly.
They measure their carbon footprint (and that of each product) using a “cradle-to-gate” measurement, and all Emeco products qualify for LEED credits, too, so if used in a commercial setting, they can help buildings obtain LEED certification.
West Elm
Price Range: $49 – $9,096
If you don’t live near one of their 100+ US retailers, West Elm’s website makes shopping for outdoor furniture easy. Not everything is what we would consider eco-friendly furniture so be sure to read the materials section carefully.
Some of the furniture is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, while their wooden furniture is usually made with FSC-certified hardwoods from sustainable forestry-certified sources. Some of their other furniture uses natural fabrics, others feature yarn-dyed weather-resistant cushions made of synthetic fabrics—so be sure to take care to make them last.
Fair Trade Certified since 2014, 95% of West Elm’s products are designed in-house, but they collaborate with artisan collectives around the world to bring designs to life. Williams-Sonoma, West Elm’s parent company, has set SBTi targets to reduce their absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions.
Why Choose To Support Non-Toxic and Sustainable Outdoor Furniture Brands
Here are 3 excellent reasons to choose eco-friendly outdoor furniture:
- Conventional outdoor furniture is a major contributor to deforestation and plastic pollution. Wood and synthetic materials used in outdoor furniture are often sourced unsustainably. Tropical hardwoods like teak are frequently harvested illegally, contributing to deforestation and biodiversity loss. Meanwhile, many mass-market outdoor pieces are made from virgin plastic or synthetic wicker, which degrade into microplastics over time and leach into the soil and waterways.
- Low-quality outdoor furniture contributes to growing landfill waste. “Fast” outdoor furniture is often designed for short-term seasonal use, made with cheap materials that crack, rust, or warp quickly under sun and moisture exposure. These pieces are rarely repairable or recyclable and are routinely discarded after a couple of summers.
- Conventional outdoor furniture may contain harmful finishes or coatings. To survive the elements, many outdoor furnishings are coated with toxic weatherproofing chemicals, including PFAS (so-called “forever chemicals”) and other synthetic compounds that can leach into soil and water over time. These chemicals are linked to environmental persistence and health concerns.
How We Found The Best Sustainable Outdoor Furniture Brands
We considered the following criteria in deciding which eco-friendly patio furniture brands to include:
Rated Brands:
Through our own rating system across 22 different sustainability related criteria, we can delve deeper with brands to understand their various sustainability initiatives. In this guide to sustainable outdoor furniture, we prioritized brands who have worked with us to issue a sustainability assessment. This means they have been that much more transparent and open with us which gives us more comfort in recommending them to our readers. Learn more about our ratings.
Materials:
Upcycled, recycled and recyclable materials are always priority. We’re happy to see brands using recycled types of plastic like HDPE and PET, in addition to materials like steel and aluminum—which are often recycled and can be easily recycled again and again.
Natural, renewable wood is another good material, especially if it’s been reclaimed or sourced from responsibly managed forests. For durability in the elements, wood often needs a protective stain or finish. To ensure we’re also buying non-toxic furniture, we look for non-toxic stain for outdoor furniture or other zero to low-VOC finishes.
Relevant Certifications: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Cradle to Cradle Certified, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), OEKO-TEX, GREENGUARD
Supply chain and labor practices:
Watermelon tastes much juicier while you’re using non-toxic outdoor furniture made by a talented artisan that’s supported with fair trade conditions and pay. Not all brands featured are focused on transparency or manufacturing certifications, but we seek out and priotize those that do.
Relevant Certifications: B Corporation, Fair Trade
Carbon commitments & green practices:
SBTi commitments, carbon offsets, recyclable packaging, local manufacturing, and shipping practices to cut carbon footprints help to make outdoor furniture eco-friendly.
Community & charitable giving:
Summer sun and backyard lounging bring good vibes, which can be made even better if we’re doing it on the products of brands that give back to those in need (including the environment).
Final Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Outdoor Furniture
To continue enjoying the great outdoors, we should all be doing our part to preserve it. One easy way to do just that is to put greener and cleaner products in our outdoor spaces (like eco-friendly landscaping).
If you need sustainable outdoor furniture, secondhand should be your first port of call. Check out local garage sales, antique shops, or online thrift stores for 100% reclaimed wood and vintage pieces. For new, consider a sustainable outdoor furniture brand and durable furniture pieces designed with our planet in mind. They’re sure to be a talking point around the fire pit.
