Summer means surf, salt, sunshine, and finding the best sustainable swimwear brands.
Between wedgie-giving one pieces and non-biodegradable bikinis, traditional swimwear doesn’t fit right—for us or the planet.
That’s why we’re diving into the growing pool of brands that prioritize recycled materials, minimal waste production, and low-impact dyes, among other eco-attributes.
And as we continue to update this and other articles, we’ll be using our new Brand Rating System to assess brands against a range of criteria from transparency and ethics to the durability of their garments. For a deeper dive into that, take a look at our explainer.
Now for some swimwear that takes plastic out of our water, instead of washing it back in.
We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.
The Best Recycled Swimwear Brands Making A Splash
We can’t overstate the need to stop relying on virgin plastics, and Understatement agrees, hence their line of recycled bathing suits made for women, by women. We found the ECONYL® recycled polyamide fabric incredibly comfortable, providing the perfect flattering fit.
Noserider Surf Club’s swim and surf suits made of recycled nylon may help you catch a big wave, but it’s all thanks to a small supply chain located entirely in Bali. We’ve tested several pieces, including the Lowback Cropped Rash Guard, which we commend for its playful design, performance fit, and unrestricted movement.
BERLOOK’s petite and plus-size swimming suit catalog will turn heads and keep beach-goers of all shapes and sizes comfortable and confident with timelessly elegant cuts. We’ve tested several of their pieces and love that they’re stylish, sexy, and sustainable, thanks to the recycled ECONYL® fabric.

BERLOOK’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

My Personal Review of BERLOOK’s ECONYL® Red Cutout One Piece Swimwear & Navy Cut Out Bikini Top:
“Nothing puts us more in the mood for a quick plunge like a stylishly sexy plunge neckline. That’s why I was thrilled to test the ECONYL® Red Cutout One Piece Swimwear and love the supportive yet stretchy fit of its mostly regenerated yarn makeup.
If you’re more of a two-piece person, the Navy Cut Out Bikini Top and matching bottoms are a swimming combo combo. I also tested this and really loved the super soft and comfortable microfiber lining that mimics terry cloth, so it feels like you’re always wrapped up in your beach towel. Berlook’s other styles I tried didn’t feature this lining, but it’s so comfortable that I would love to see it incorporated into all their styles.”

Noserider Surf Club
About Noserider Surf Club
Price Range: $20–$160
Emma Bukowski started Noserider Surf Club when she realized her dream of becoming a surfer.
The ethical swimwear brand maintains a small local supply chain for surf suits, bikinis, rash guards, one-pieces, and swimwear gear.
Noserider Surf Club’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Noserider uses the eco-friendly swimwear fabric Vita, a luxury fabric crafted from 78% ECONYL® and 22% elastane.
It comprises the entire suit, lining included.
Supply chain & labor practices:
Noserider keeps production close to home, meaning everything is handmade in Bali, Indonesia.
Their manufacturing partner is female-owned and just a few minutes up the road from their flagship store.
Caron commitments & green practices:
Noserider packages each suit in a biodegradable canvas storage bag, which only needs to travel down the road to its storage facility.
The swimsuit tags are made from recycled card paper, with recycled kraft paper hygiene liners.
Inclusivity:
A female-founded brand, Noserider carries eco-friendly bathing suits in women’s sizes XXS–XL.
My Personal Review of Noserider Surf Club’s Lowback Cropped Rash Guard & Bikini Bottom& Top:
“I tested the Lowback Cropped Rash Guard and appreciate its performance fit, but I especially love it for its versatility to be paired with any swimwear bottoms (whether’s Noserider’s that I tested as well or not) anytime you need a little warmth or sun protection on your upper half.
If you’re worried about burning your back still (out of sight, out of mind!), the regular Cropped Rash Guard eliminates that plunging back for full shoulder and arm coverage. It’s their standout product, and as a water-sport lover, I can absolutely see why. Both rashguard tops are designed to have a snug fit, particularly around the band, so they won’t ever come off when surfing or doing other more rambunctious water sports, but if you don’t want it to fit THAT tight, I recommend sizing up one size. I would typically buy a small, and the medium fits me perfectly in these”.

My Personal Review of Understatement’s High Cut Bikini Briefs & Plunge Bikini Top:
“I strapped up the Plunge Bikini Top and the High Cut Bikini Briefs to see if they were worth their salt. The ECONYL® fabric used for these styles is unique compared to other brands on this list because of its super soft and stretchy rib knit, which is not only flattering but oh-so-comfortable. The bottoms definitely have a very cheeky fit, so if you’re not comfortable with baring your bum, I would suggest a different set of bottoms, but I personally love the combo of the high waist and open hips that really gives me the long-legged beach babe look.”
