7 Hemp Underwear Brands For Ex-hemp-lary Sustainability

Hemp hemp hooray for hemp underwear!

It’s safe to say we’re just a little bit in love with hemp clothing brands and hemp fabric in general.

Why?

Because hemp is becoming highly regarded as the sustainable fiber of the future—and no, not because of its THC-bearing brethren.

It’s a high-yielding, carbon-negative crop that can be easily grown without the use of chemicals to produce clothing, food, biofuel, paper, and more.

But(t) here we’re focusing on its benefits for your bottom.

Being naturally antibacterial, breathable, and hypoallergenic, hemp keeps your nether regions feeling fresh so we wanted to (h)emphasize brands that are harnessing its power.

Like WAMA, which offers organic hemp underwear in every style for every booty

For the purest 100% hemp underwear, have a look at Rawganique’s undyed, unbleached hemp undies which feature either a biodegradable waistband or no waistband at all.

Head down to the end of the article to find out how we weeded out the competition to find the best hemp underwear brands.

HOW WE FOUND THE BEST HEMP UNDERWEAR

When looking at sustainable and ethical fashion, what better place to start than with our underthings?

Here are the criteria we used to assess these hemp underwear brands

Materials:

Hemp fabric has been around for thousands of years and for good reason.

It’s durable, lightweight, breathable, antimicrobial, naturally high in UPF (AKA sun protection), and versatile—you’ll find it in everything from ethical sneakers to sustainable mattresses.

It’s also a regenerative crop sequestering more carbon from the atmosphere than the methods required to farm it. It requires minimal water (unlike cotton), replenishes soil nutrients, and doesn’t require the use of pesticides or herbicides.

Unlike cotton, hemp isn’t mass produced. It’s typically grown on small family-run farms. This does make GOTS certification a challenge as the certification process is more geared towards larger operations. Hence why you won’t find organically certified hemp, yet.

Hemp is often blended with other fabrics like GOTS organic cotton and for hemp underwear, there is usually a small percentage of lycra, spandex, or elastane involved to get the stretch.

As long as these are kept in minimal percentages (<10%), it won’t affect the compostability of your hemp underwear.

For fully non-toxic hemp underwear, hemp fabric should also be dyed with low-impact, non-toxic dyes.

Supply chain and labor practices

Ethical manufacturing is critical and that’s why knowing #whomademyclothes (or rather #whomademyunderclothes) is transparency key.

Between in-house production, local factories, and the careful selection and auditing of manufacturing partners, these hemp underwear brands are putting people as well as the plant first.

And while the hemp plant is green, we don’t want any greenwashing, so we look for third-party certifiers.

Green business practices

We like to see brands taking steps to reduce their ecological footprint through practices such as using renewable energy, zero waste production methods, and the use of sustainable packaging.

Any Etsy-based brands also come with Etsy’s additional commitment of carbon offset shipping.

Inclusivity:

We look for inclusive modeling and sizing to fit all bodies.

Though some brands are ahead of the game there’s generally room for a bit of improvement here.

Community & charitable giving:

Whilst we acknowledge some are too small for this, hemp underwear brands that show some (h)empathy by donating to worthy causes make us smile.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON HEMP UNDERWEAR BRANDS

In case we’ve not been (h)emphatic enough, here’s the bottom line:

Hemp fabric is the perfect fabric for the planet and our patooties.

For years, the conflation of hemp with marijuana meant that hemp received bad press. Now, with the de-stigmatization of the latter, hemp is making a long overdue comeback.

Thankfully, it looks like this sustainable fabric is here to stay. What a releaf!

We hope you’ve found this list of hemp underwear brands hempful.

Please share it with your hemp-loving friends so that they too can be privy to sustainable skivvies and the benefits of oh-so-soft hemp underwear.
