Nobody likes a pickpocket…problem is, most of us are taking from the earth without even knowing it.

It’s time to give up the life of crime and pay it forward with a sustainable wallet—instead of those made of toxin-tanned leather and synthetics.

Whether you need a trifold wallet, or something skinny, you won’t need to write an IOU to Mother Earth with one of these eco-friendly wallet brands that prioritize responsible materials, ethical labor, and a transparent supply chain.

Soon we’ll be rolling out our new Brand Rating System. This system looks at a brand’s eco-performance against a range of criteria, like chemical use and climate impact. To learn more, take a look here.

We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.

Bellroy

Bellroy has not been rated.

About Bellroy

Price Range: $55–$179

Change the way you stash your cash with Bellroy. From humble beginnings, it has grown to cult sustainable wallet status.

Each featuring RFID protection and innovative designs, you can shop a vast selection of men’s and women’s card holders, billfolds, flip case wallets, and zippered wallets—in all shapes, sizes, and colors. That’s in addition to backpacks, cross-body bags, laptop sleeves, and other accessories.

Bellroy’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Bellroy offers both wallets made from leather and vegan-friendly materials. The former are made of LWG-certified ECCO leather (made using water and chemical-saving DriTan™ technology) and a recycled wallet lining and stitching made of recycled polyester.

Non-leather options are made of MIRUM®, a vegan leather alternative made from natural rubber, soybeans, and pine charcoal, with cotton linings, pull tabs, and stitchings.

Supply chain & labor practices:

While animal welfare is a top priority, Bellroy doesn’t forget about humans, ensuring fair pay and treatment as per their Certified B Corp status. This means sourcing leather from LWG Gold-certified tanneries in the Netherlands, where workers are not exposed to heavy metals or carcinogens common in leather tanning.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Inspired by Cradle-to-Cradle principles, each wallet is consciously designed with features like through-dyeing, strong stitching, tightly woven lining, and pre-molded leather. They also come with a 3-year warranty, so you know they’re durable.

Other green actions include opting for Zoom over business travel, working with local warehouses, and promoting responsible waste management for suppliers and tanneries.

My Personal Review of Bellroy’s Hide-&-Seek Wallet:

“If you’re on the hunt for a sleek, minimalist wallet, Bellroy’s Hide-&-Seek Wallet is perfect. It holds all my cards and also has a hidden compartment for some cash. Heads up, the secret sleeve can’t handle a big wad of bills (without bulging and not folding shut), but if you only need to carry a small amount of backup cash, it’s ideal.”

My Personal Review of Pixie Mood’s Jane 2-in-1 Crossbody:

“I adore the versatility of the Jane 2-in-1 Crossbody, so much so that it’s become my main daily purse. Half wallet clutch, half mini purse, if I only need the wallet, I can simply unclip it and go. And when it’s attached to the purse, I appreciate the added magnetics that keeps both components securely together. It’s so cute, and with a faux nubuck leather look and feel, it’s just as classic and as easily pairable with any outfit as leather…without all the ethical issues.”

Why Invest In An Environmentally-Friendly Wallet?

Traditional wallets made of leather or PVC may protect our finances, but they sure aren’t investing in a better future.

Leather is an animal byproduct, and while sometimes leather is sourced as a byproduct, one million animals are still killed annually purely for their hides.

Animal cruelty aside, it’s also cruel to the planet. Leather tanning traditionally uses 250 toxic chemicals, like chromium, arsenic, and cyanide.

These chemicals are dangerous to the workers, the environment around the factory where the chemicals leach, and the landfill where your “natural” leather wallet takes over a hundred years to break down.

PVC vegan leather may be more ethical, but as the most toxic type of plastic with NO good end-of-life outcome, it’s just as dangerous.
