Currently, most bamboo electric toothbrushes consist of a plastic main body to protect the electronic parts. At a minimum, this needs to be recyclable and we hope to see more use of recycled plastic, too.
Then there are the bristles that often get in the way of bamboo electric toothbrush heads being truly compostable.
Castor oil bristles are the current most popular choice used by sustainable bamboo electric toothbrush brands. While they are biodegradable, they can’t be called compostable because they take too long to break down (around six months in a home compost pile).
Beyond materials, we looked for:
