Subscription services took off in the early 2010s with meal replacements and beauty products. Now, you can find a box for just about anything. But what about sustainable subscription boxes bringing responsibly-made products right to your doorstep?
It may seem counterproductive at first—more consumer goods, carbon emissions, and cardboard packaging. And you would be correct if the brands on our list didn’t provide plastic-free, zero-waste, recyclable, biodegradable, and carbon-neutral products. But that’s exactly what they offer.
In fact, some of their boxes are a complete surprise courtesy of new low-waste products each month, while others allow you to pick and choose what you need and how often you need it. Personally, we think the latter is the best way to make your subscription box eco-friendly. That way, you know you’re getting things you need and will use.
So, in the immortal words of Brad Pitt: what’s in the (sustainability) box? Let’s break it open and find out.
You may notice a few brands on this list have been rated by us on their sustainability credentials. You can learn more about this here and see other rated brands here.

Our Personal Review of Blueland’s Clean Essentials Kit:
“We’ve personally tested the Clean Essentials kit—along with just about every other one Blueland provides, including their laundry and dish kits. We’ve found all their products to be super effective and love how waste-free they are. Everything comes in tablet form, so the only waste with each monthly subscription is the tablet refill packet, which is biodegradable and industrially compostable.
Their “forever bottles” are a pleasure to use and don’t take up too much space, helping to streamline our cleaning supplies. They smell great, too, without being too overpowering.”

My Personal Review of Grove Collaborative’s Essential Cleaners Set & Floor Cleaner Concentrate:
“I gave Grove Co.’s Essential Cleaners Set in the orange and rosemary scent a try, and I’m pretty impressed. The set comes with a glass cleaner, multi-purpose cleaner, and tub & tile cleaner, and while the bottles look tiny, they’re packed with a concentrated formula that works great on grease and dirt. My only gripe is the packaging—though the glass and aluminum caps are eco-friendly, mine leaked a bit during shipping because the cap wasn’t quite tight enough. Fortunately, the other items weren’t ruined, but it’s something I’ll keep in mind for future orders.
“I also trialed Grove Co.’s Floor Cleaner Concentrate in citron and white rose, and while I’m not ready to say mopping is my new favorite activity, this definitely makes it more bearable. A small amount goes a long way on my reusable Swiffer pad, and it leaves my floors spotless without any sticky residue, which has been a problem in the past with other cleaners. Plus, the scent is lovely—a fresh blend of citrus and rose that fills the room with a clean, inviting fragrance without being overpowering.”
