For many of us guys, shopping (at best) can be an endurance sport, never mind the pressure of finding legitimate sustainable men’s clothing brands.

So to save you the effort of researching, we sourced the best brands doing better for men, people and the environment. We prioritized those who use sustainable materials and ethical labor practices, among other requirements.

Our new Brand Rating System extends this consideration set further (for rated brands) to include 22 different sustainability related criteria including things like biodiversity and chemical use. You can read more about that here and look out for the rated men’s clothing brands on the list below who have taken that extra step to be rated – these are the brands who are being more transparent and open about their sustainability and people initiatives.

We independently research all featured brands, and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. We explain this further in our Terms of Use.

My Personal Review Of Paka’s “The Original Crew”

“This has fast become my favorite piece of clothing, Joy will tell you that once I love an item of clothing, it’s difficult for me to wear anything else and this is one of those items. The color is great, the ultra soft fabric is so comfortable and appealing to both relax in but also to work in, hike in, camp in and just be out and about it. I really like the oversized fit – is very breathable… I’m relieved the days of tight men’s sweaters are over…”

Allbirds’ is well known sustainable running shoes brand and their clothing range for men is equal parts comfortable and functional. It includes t-shirts, sweaters, hats and socks.

Allbirds’ clothing features materials like ZQ Merino wool, TENCEL lyocell, Organic Cottin, and patented blends like TrinoXO™ (lyocell, merino wool, and chitosan made from upcycled shellfish skeletons). Allbirds is a Certified B Corp and all suppliers must adhere to their supplier code of conduct. Tier 1 suppliers are required to participate in independent, third-party social and environmental audits.

Arms Of Andes

Arms Of Andes has not been rated.

Price Range: $$-$$$

Arms of Andes was founded five years ago by siblings Meli and Rensso Hinostroza in Peru. They offer super soft men’s base layers, mid layers, shirts, bottom layers, underwear, socks and more.

Arms of Andes’ flagship material is their 100% alpaca wool fabric, one of the most sustainable fabrics and ethical wool options available.

Alpaca wool is 100% compostable and Arms of Andes sources from Alpaca herders where alpacas are raised in small, free-roaming herds in the Peruvian Andes. The wool is OEKO-TEX 100 certified and naturally dyed.

Other materials used are cotton stitching and zippers made of a metal and cotton/synthetic mix.

Arms of Andes sources the wool from Alpaca herder co-ops in exchange for living wages. The raw materials become fabric and ultimately clothing in Peruvian factories, close to the sources of the wool in Lima (reducing carbon emissions).

The Arms of Andes team are involved in overseeing both the fabric and garment production by visiting every week, to ensure quality and ethical practices.

The Classic T-Shirt Company

The Classic T-Shirt Company has not been rated.

Price Range: $$-$$$

The Classic T-Shirt Company makes short sleeves T-shirts, long sleeve T-shirts, sweatshirts, joggers and shorts in a range of classic colors.

The highly rated sustainable T-shirt brand makes their clothing with 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton which they dye with premium, non-toxic Azo-free dyes. The cotton is combed (for softness), ring-spun, and pre-shrunk so the final product maintains colors and shape.

All their clothing is made in the USA, starting with organic cotton farming and milling. The yarn is then sent to a vertically integrated state-of-the-art facility in L.A. for knitting, handcrafting, and embroidering.

Committed to ethical production practices, all these entities provide fair wages, reasonable hours, and excellent working conditions.

The Classic T-Shirt Company creates products that are designed to last, confirmed by multiple shrink tests and quality control assurances. Durability above all prevents textile waste.

They use only recycled, plastic-free packaging.

My Personal Review of The Classic T-Shirt Company’s Men’s Short Sleeve V-Neck:

“I’m seriously impressed with this super-soft organic cotton tee. After a year of wear, it still looks pretty much like it did on day one, with no fading or pilling to the fabric. It’s way more durable than your usual $10 t-shirt. The cut is just right, too, making this one of my all-time favorite tees.”

tentree

tentree has not been rated.

Price Range: $-$$$

tentree is a Canadian maker of men’s clothing (and one of the best slow fashion brands) aiming to “motivate and encourage environmental stewardship through earth-first apparel”.

This includes earth-inspired graphic tees, tanks, button-ups, sweatpants, and hoodies (we can personally vouch for how buttery soft these are). They also make shorts, pants, boxers, winter jackets, and accessories.

tentree uses sustainable materials like organic cotton, hemp, TENCEL, and REPREVE® recycled polyester (made from recycled plastic bottles). Only some products include a small percentage of elastane.

This Certified B Corporation specifies where each product was made via a comprehensive Factory Ledger. All factories bear one or more certifications by WRAP, BSCI, SA8000, Fair Trade, and Fair Wear Foundation.

Taylor Stitch

Taylor Stitch has not been rated.

Price Range: $$-$$$$

Taylor Stitch’s specialty is quality high-end sustainable menswear. With mostly limited runs and a handsome, charming modern-meets-old-times vibe, the ethical clothing brand is best known for its men’s shirts, pants, chinos, sweaters, denim, and jackets.

The brand uses 100% Global Organic Textile Standard certified -organic cotton for 99% of their cotton products. Their “Heavy Bag” custom textile is made of recycled cotton and recycled polyester. The beloved customer favorite “Boss Duck” is a hemp-based heavy-duty working wear fabric (combined with with recycled polyester and a touch of spandex for stretch).

Their leather is sourced as a byproduct and partner tanneries hold Gold certifications from The Leather Working Group. Their ethically-sourced yak wool is offers a softness comparable to cashmere while being more environmentally friendly, and their merino wool is ethically-sourced non-mulesed wool.

A plant-based wax is applied to all their waxed organic cotton items, like their popular Bomber Jacket, a staple piece of men’s eco-friendly clothing designed to be worn year-round for years to come.

The brand ensures ethical production practices by pairing with some of the most responsible factories in the industry. Their fair trade criteria for production partners include fair wages and fair labor practices, outstanding quality control, and a united commitment to environmental protection.

Taylor Stitch also has a ‘Restitch’ program—which offers store credit for returned items to be repaired and resold—and provides free in-store repairs along with online repair tutorials.

My Personal Review of Taylor Stitch’s The Jack in Indigo Oxford:

“Out of the several Taylor Stitch pieces I own, I especially love The Jack in Indigo Oxford. It’s got that perfect dark wash that’s easy to dress up or down. It’s my go-to when I’m in a rush (or just not feeling like thinking about outfits).

I also own The Long Haul Jacket in Sawyer Wash Organic Selvage which is super comfortable with plenty of room to move in the shoulders and arms. Plus, it’s really durable so I can see it being a wardrobe staple for years to come”.

Kotn

Kotn has not been rated.

Price Range: $-$$$

Kotn is a Certified B Corp that offers affordable basics, flannel shirts, button-downs, sweatshirts, sweatpants, chinos, long johns, denim, work pants, and socks.

Kotn uses Giza “white gold” cotton, the finest of all Egyptian cotton available. While Kotn garments are all 100% Giza cotton, not all of it is organically grown yet but they are helping farmers transition to organic practices so that it eventually will be. The brand also uses linen and ECOtek cotton (a fabric made from production waste).

Kotn operates on a direct trade model, purchasing Egyptian cotton directly from family-run farms at set prices to protect farmers from market fluctuations.

All farms and factories are subject to regular brand and third-party audits and all partners guarantee a living wage. Dyes are OEKO-TEX® certified as non-toxic.

Outerknown

Outerknown has not been rated.

Price Range: $$$-$$$$

One of the most well-known sustainable men’s swimwear brands, Outerknown designs fair trade men’s clothing and outdoor apparel.

You’ll find sweatshirts, jeans, chinos, tees, henleys, polos, swim trunks, and outerwear that are rustic in appearance, rugged in build and soft to the touch.

Outerknown uses primarily natural materials like organic cotton, hemp, alpaca wool, Kelsun™ (a seaweed-based fiber) and RDS-certified down. Items like their trunks instead feature recycled polyester and Econyl made of discarded fishing nets.

As a bluesign®-approved brand, all their clothing is made without harmful chemicals.

Outerknown publish their full list of suppliers and while manufacturing takes place in Peru, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand and China, each Outerknown garment is sewn in Fair Trade Certified factories.

Every supplier and factory must abide by its Code of Conduct and Fair Labor Association (FLA) ethical production practices.

Regular collaborations and limited-run products donate profits to pro-ocean NGOs like Ocean Conservancy.

My Personal Review of Outerknown’s Blanket Shirt:

“This piece is an all-time favorite of mine. Biodegradable down to the corozo nut buttons, it’s made of tightly woven, super thick 100% organic cotton that is so incredibly durable and doesn’t pill like traditional flannel fabric. I never knew a flannel shirt could be so cozy, so much so that I now own three because I wear them literally every single day at one point or another when I need a little extra layering.”

My Personal Review of Outerknown’s Drifter Jeans:

“These are among the best jeans I’ve ever owned. I’m particularly impressed by the rich indigo color and how well the dye has held up after months of use and washing. My only issue is the lack of short inseams; being 5’5″, I find it frustrating that the brand only provides 32″ lengths, which means I have to cuff the pants.”

Patagonia

Patagonia has not been rated.

Price Range: $-$$$$

As far as men’s clothing for the outdoors goes, few brands are better than Patagonia. Their clothing range includes sweaters, technical outdoor jackets, vests, pants for hiking and climbing, swim trunks, hats, underwear, t-shirts, gloves, and bags of all shapes and sizes.

Despite that, they’ve kept their line limited for decades and focus on improving classic designs. The Synchilla Snap-T fleece (with a rad retro 90s vibe) was one of their first designs and is still a bestseller.

Not all garments are equally eco-friendly, but their most sustainable materials include organic non-GMO natural fibers like cotton, hemp, and linen. Next are Patagonia’s recycled synthetics, like the 100% recycled polyester used in the Capilene line of activewear basics and baselayers.

They also use ethically sourced and certified wool and down for some of their insulation layers and winter clothing.

All inks are PVC-free and phthalate-free, and you can shop their bluesign®-approved garments to ensure no toxic chemicals were used.

82% of their line is made in Fair Trade-certified factories that are regularly visited by executive staff, so if you’re looking for men’s fair trade clothing, theirs is about as good as it gets. You’ll also find some clothing made in the USA, too.

They support circularity through the lifetime repair-or-replace IronClad Guarantee and Worn Wear, a buy-back program and online thrift store for used Patagonia clothing and gear.

Patagonia is the founding company of 1% for the Planet and is now actually owned by two environmental non-profits.
