Images by Brilliant Earth

About Brilliant Earth

Price Range: $320–$17,500

Brilliant Earth has been pioneering a more ethical luxury jewelry industry longer than most.

Using recycled metal and lab-grown diamonds proves that bling doesn’t need to be “new” to start your new life together on the right foot—or instead, finger.

They have sustainable men’s wedding rings in unique designs, like the Magnus, with its meteorite exterior balanced with a black tungsten interior for a bold style.

But the real stunners are their women’s range—like the stunningly simple Lunette Diamond Ring, whose elegant V of diamonds is meant to perfectly cradle your engagement ring.

Brilliant Earth’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

What is the most ethical material for wedding bands?

Brilliant Earth has the answer—recycled yellow and white gold or silver sourced from Responsible Mining Initiative and London Bullion Market Association-audited refiners.

Having increased their percentages of recycled gold (98%) and silver (97%), only ~2% of their metals are non-recycled, but still have Fairmined certification.

Brilliant Earth goes beyond the diamond industry standards, offering Beyond Conflict Free™ Diamonds that have been selected for strict ethical guidelines.

Otherwise, you will find lab-grown and recycled diamonds in their wedding and engagement rings.

For a rarer look, they also offer responsibly sourced meteorite and tungsten jewelry. The latter originates from non-conflict mining areas and is processed in RMAP-compliant refiners.

Supply chain & labor practices:

As a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, BE’s policies go beyond the base requirements and extend to efforts like minimizing environmental impacts and supporting safe workplaces.

BE sources its diamonds and gemstones from around the globe and strives to promote higher sourcing standards to transform dangerous diamond mining communities and encourage responsible practices.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Your eco-friendly wedding band (or any ring for that matter) will come with a lifetime warranty, shipped in post-consumer recycled content, and an FSC-certified wooden ring box.

Did we mention they’re certified Carbonfree® by supporting Brazil’s Tropical Rainforest Conservation project?

Read further for more on Brilliant Earth’s sustainability mission and efforts.

Community & charitable giving:

Beyond setting an example, The Brilliant Earth Foundation tripled donations from 2021 to 2022, awarding $518k to non-profit organizations in 2022 to organizations like Pure Earth and Diamond Development Initiative to promote mercury free mining and mine site rehabilitation.

Sales from specific collections see additional profits donated to organizations protecting the environment, uplifting black communities, and supporting LGBTQIA+ youth in crisis.

How We Found The Best Eco-Friendly Wedding Rings

Between caterers, photographers, and that annoying cousin who absolutely cannot sit next to your sister, weddings are stressful, so you shouldn’t be ruminating on the origins of your wedding ring.

So, to take the worry out of the wedding, we had to first ask ourselves: What are sustainable wedding rings?

We used a combination of our sustainable fashion and sustainable jewelry criteria to find the lab-grown diamonds in the rough.

What is the most ethical ring material?

Considering gold mining is one of the most destructive industries in the world, recycled wedding rings or vintage rings are choice #1.

Even if recycled metals and stones aren’t traceable, using non-virgin materials that do not encourage further mining is the way to go.

We recommend lab-grown diamonds, as conflict-free mined diamonds are a gray area and may not really be conflict-free.

Organic wedding bands and wooden earthy wedding rings aren’t common yet, but some brands have figured out epoxy injection methods to make these a more viable option.

Supply chain & labor practices:

We want sustainable and fair trade wedding rings, so it’s crucial to think about the “who” behind the sparkle—even if they’re not on the seating chart.

Our hearts certainly go pitter-patter for brands making meaningful efforts towards transparent supply chains, ethical labor standards, and traceability back to source mines.

If mined diamonds are used, this is especially important, since the diamond industry is notorious for abuses.

All conscious jewelry brands should be responsible for health care and benefits, fair pay, support for ASM communities, and safe working conditions.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Love can only last as long as our planet, so we prioritize carbon-neutral brands and materials, water recycling, compostable or reusable packaging, and other impact management strategies.

For ethical jewelry, this also means they should utilize mercury-free mining methods.

Community & charitable giving:

Your celebratory day can spread global joy, especially when you select a fine jewelry brand that contributes to local and global communities through donations and projects supporting mining communities.

Final Thoughts On Environmentally Friendly Wedding Rings

You’ve already said yes to your ethical wedding dress and sent out your eco-friendly wedding invitations.

Now it’s time to say “I do” to a ring that is no less desirable.

While many out there will dull your day, there are ethical wedding bands abound—we just have to rummage through the jewelry box.

Yes, sustainable and ethical jewelry is only in its infancy.

There’s still work to be done, but every time you say “I do” to a sustainable jewelry brand that aligns with your values, you’re creating demand for an industry that’s better for people and the planet.

If you know someone planning their wedding, consider sharing this list of the best sustainable wedding bands with them to make that big day even better.
