About Elvis & Kresse

Like the King himself, Elvis & Kresse has us all shook up (in a good way) saying “Don’t be cruel” to cows.

The London-based company is all about saving and repurposing valuable materials.

Case in point: their first products were made from decommissioned fire hoses.

And they’ve continued combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative design to create stunning ethical handbags, purses, and other sustainable accessories

These include sustainable mens wallets and sustainable ladies wallets in several designs and colors.

Elvis & Kresse’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Elvis & Kresse takes “sustainable wallet materials” to a new level—by reclaiming more than 220 tons of landfill bound dead stock.

Many of their wallets are made from retired fire hoses after 25 years of service in the London Fire Brigade. While the hoses soften over time, they retain their strength, creating durable and long-lasting eco friendly wallets.

Most wallets are available in either yellow or red hose and are lined with reclaimed military-grade parachute silk (which is also vegan).

Some wallets are made from hand-woven rescued Burberry leather scrap and/or vintage printing blankets.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Elvis and Kresse has a workshop in Kent, where most products are manufactured. The remainder are made in Istanbul, Turkey.

Staff are paid well and the brand does not tolerate discrimination or unfair treatment. In fact, Elvis & Kresse is a UK B Corporation and a member of the Living Wage Foundation.

Green business practices:

Reclaimed wallets aside, everything is reclaimed, including the shipping materials and packaging which are made of hessian coffee and tea sacks, tea bag paper, and shoe boxes.

Community & charitable giving:

Elvis & Kresse is a brand that gives back big.

50% of their profits are donated to charities related to their rescued materials. This includes The Fire Fighters Charity, The Costa Foundation, and a few coffee grower initiatives.

About Billy Tannery

Going against the (leather) grain, Billy Tannery wants to, in the words of co-founder Jack Millington, “challenge the assumption that all leather is bad for the environment“.

The brand was founded as a solution to the UK’s declining leather industry and conversely booming dairy and meat industries.

Billy Tannery transforms these once landfill bound hides into unisex bags, aprons, pouches, and wallets.

Their sustainable minimalist wallets come in two essential styles: cardholder and bifold, and in various colors.

Billy Tannery’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

These sustainable leather wallets are made from goat hides that would otherwise end up in landfills.

They’re tanned using traditional bark tanning techniques.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Using a vertically integrated supply chain, Billy Tannery products are fully traceable.

The key player in this is Cabrito Goat Meat, an award-winning meat supplier also based in the UK. They’ve been named Observer Food’s Best Ethical Producer.

After sourcing the hides, the leather is tanned in a small-batch “microtannery”, then handmade in small UK workshops just 15 minutes away from said tannery.

Green business practices:

Not only do they use vegetable tanning, but their innovative process recycles 90% of the water and turns waste into compost.

All products come with a lifetime repair guarantee.

About A_C

A_C founder Tessa Carroll grew up in an environmentally-aware home yet found herself in one of the world’s most wasteful industries—fashion.

Rather than going with the fast fashion flow, she wanted to change it from the inside, with a slow fashion strategy.

And to do that she focused on the sustainable womens wallet.

Namely, eco friendly wristlet wallets, clutches, and slim wallet-purses.

A_C’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

A_C has an impressive list of sustainable materials in their PETA-approved vegan wallets, including pineapple leather, washable paper, deadstock, recycled polyester, and Desserto cactus leather.

Each features a 100% GOTS certified organic cotton inner.

As for the cactus leather, it’s derived from Nopal or ‘Prickly Pear’ cacti; the plant-based leather is soft and partially biodegradable.

The cactus is sustainably grown on a Mexican cactus ranch that supports local biodiversity and uses rain-fed systems (no irrigation). Only mature stems are taken, leaving the plant to grow.

Supply chain & labor practices:

A_C has manufacturing partners in China.

They only work with those who respect the rights of their factory workers and provide them with education and training, access to healthcare, and fair wages.

They also prohibit abuse, harassment, forced labor, and child labor.

Green business practices:

They care about their product’s longevity and end of life, offering repairs, and a buyback program, to resell unwanted products in their pre-loved section.

Thanks to a partnership with the Climate Foundation, they offset their manufacturing emissions.

Community & charitable giving:

$5 from every sale is donated to Tasmania’s coastal sea forests.

WHY CHOOSE AN ECO FRIENDLY WALLET?

For such an essential wearable, traditional wallet manufacturing sure isn’t investing a better future.

Many wallets are made with the same old unsustainable and unethical materials: leather and PVC.

Leather is one of our least favorite fabrics.

Why?

Because it’s cruel. Leather is an animal byproduct, and while sometimes leather is sourced from abattoirs, 1 million animals are still killed every year purely for their hide.

Animal cruelty aside, it’s also cruel to the planet. Leather tanning traditionally uses 250 toxic chemicals, like chromium, arsenic, and cyanide.

These chemicals are dangerous to the workers, the environment around the factory where the chemicals leach, and the landfill where your “natural” leather wallet takes over a hundred years to break down.

The other common material found in wallets may be more ethical but it’s just as dangerous. PVC is one of the most toxic types of plastic because of its high chemical content and lack of disposability.

Wallets may appear to be a small part of our wardrobes, but their collective impact is huge, especially if we don’t make changes by seeking better brands.

HOW WE FOUND THE BEST SUSTAINABLE WALLETS

Your baby’s first birthday photo and that gift card which expired three years ago belong in a special place—in something that’s been ethically made.

When we think of what underpins a sustainable and eco friendly wallet, we refer to our sustainable fashion criteria. These are the highlights:

Materials:

The world of wallets is an exciting one, and we’re thrilled to see an array of innovative vegan leather alternatives being used.

Natural cork fabric and rubber, decommissioned fire hoses, recycled plastic bottles, repurposed ocean plastic, recycled nylon, reclaimed parachute silk, and vegan plant leathers like pinatex and cactus leather were all found in the wallets featured.

We didn’t discount options made from polyurethane (a more eco-friendly alternative to PVC), but still, recognize that it is plastic and is thus not a sustainable option.

Animal leather was rarely used, and when it was it could arguably be classified as ethical leather as it was sourced from recycled leather offcuts or leather naturally tanned with eco-friendly materials.

The former being preferred.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Transparency is important to know how to avoid fast fashion, so we’re happy to report many of these brands aren’t afraid to flash their cash in this department.

Most regularly visit their manufacturing factories, have strict codes of conduct that prioritize fair wages and safe working conditions, and have third party certifications to double-check their auditing.

Green business practices:

The money inside may not last long, but the wallet itself should last years.

We feel better about emptying our wallets (sort of) when we know they’re designed to last, produced using renewable energy, sent with carbon offset shipping, and wrapped in recyclable packaging.

Community & charitable giving:

Most of these brands contribute some of their profits to environmental or social organizations. Some even donate up to 50%.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON ECO FRIENDLY WALLETS

Despite using them nearly every day, it’s easy to overlook your wallet when creating a sustainable fashion wardrobe.

We always say “vote with your dollar” and that extends to where you store those dollars, in a wallet, bank or via ethical investing apps

Wallets seldom need to be replaced, but when they do, check an online thrift store first. They’re bound to have boujee-but-budget eco friendly wallets.

And if you want to invest in a new one, consider supporting one of these brands.

While they won’t be able to help you keep your money in them, they’re designed to last.

One of the best ways to budget for our planet.
