Why Choose An Eco-Friendly Wallet?

Traditional wallets made of leather or PVC may protect our finances, but they sure aren’t investing in a better future.

Leather is an animal byproduct, and while sometimes leather is sourced as a byproduct, one million animals are still killed annually purely for their hides.

Animal cruelty aside, it’s also cruel to the planet. Leather tanning traditionally uses 250 toxic chemicals, like chromium, arsenic, and cyanide.

These chemicals are dangerous to the workers, the environment around the factory where the chemicals leach, and the landfill where your “natural” leather wallet takes over a hundred years to break down.

PVC vegan leather may be more ethical, but as the most toxic type of plastic with NO good end-of-life outcome, it’s just as dangerous.

How We Found The Best Sustainable Wallets

Your baby’s first birthday photo and that gift card which expired three years ago belong in a special place—in say, a sustainable crossbody bag that’s been ethically made.

When we think of what underpins a sustainable and eco-friendly wallet, we refer to our sustainable fashion criteria.

Materials:

Like sustainable belts, the world of wallets is an exciting one, and we’re thrilled to see an array of innovative materials being used.

Natural cork fabric and rubber, decommissioned fire hoses, recycled plastic bottles, repurposed ocean plastic, recycled nylon, organic cotton, reclaimed parachute silk, recycled car windshields and vegan plant leathers like Piñatex and cactus leather were all found in the wallets featured.

When animal leather was considered, we made sure it was ethical leather, preferably recycled leather offcuts, or vegetable-tanned leather sourced as a byrproduct.

Supply chain and labor practices:

Transparency is important to know how to avoid fast fashion, so we’re happy to report many of these brands aren’t afraid to flash their cash in this department.

Even if they’re not certified fair trade wallets, we were happy to see most regularly visit their manufacturing factories, have strict codes of conduct that prioritize fair wages and safe working conditions, and have manufacturing certifications to double-check their auditing.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

The money inside may not last long, but the wallet itself should last years, as that’s the best way to budget for our planet.

We feel better about emptying our wallets (sort of) when we know they’re designed to last, produced using renewable energy, support carbon offset programs, made with emission and resource reducing methods, and wrapped in recyclable packaging.

Community & charitable giving:

Most of these brands contribute some of their profits to environmental or social organizations—some up to 50%!

Final Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Wallets

Wallets may appear to be a small part of our wardrobes, but their collective impact is huge, especially if we don’t make changes by seeking better and more sustainable wallet brands.

We always say “vote with your dollar” and that extends to where you store those dollars, in a wallet, socially responsible bank, or via ethical investing apps

Wallets seldom need to be replaced, but when they do, check an online thrift store first. They’re bound to have boujee-but-budget eco-friendly wallets for men and for women.

If you want to invest in a new one, consider supporting one of these brands.

Even with the advent of ApplePay, we don’t see wallets disappearing anytime soon, so pass this article along to all your wallet-toting loved ones.
