It’s time to throw some shade on curtains made with environmentally destructive materials and choose organic, sustainable curtains for a healthier home and planet.

Window dressings are an important part of sustainable interior design, and we shouldn’t turn a blind eye to their impact. Especially since drapes made from plastic can contain toxic chemicals, like PVC phthalates and VOCs, which affect the indoor air quality in our homes—hence why non-toxic curtains are so important.

Fortunately, you can help draw the curtains on unsustainable materials and unethical manufacturing practices by supporting these organic curtain brands.

Note: Our brand rating system assesses brands based on multiple sustainability-related criteria, including things like product safety, climate and biodiversity impact, and ethics in the supply chain. Brands need to opt in to be rated. Look out for rated brands below and find others in our directory.

We independently research all featured brands, and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. We explain this further in our Terms of Use.

Prolinen

Price Range: $28–$183

Prolinen founder Caterina fondly recalls childhood moments spent at her grandmother’s, surrounded by fields of flax and its beautiful blue flowers. Her fascination with the traditional fabric led her to start the Polish Etsy shop which offers 100% linen bedding, blankets, clothes, curtains, and accessories.

The brand uses organic, OEKO-TEX-certified linen that’s stonewashed using an eco-friendly enzyme treatment followed by an intensive washing cycle. All products are handmade and shipped from Poland.

The organic linen curtains come in several styles (tie-up blinds, hidden-tab curtains, curtains with rings, tie-top curtains, and rod pocket curtains) and over forty beautiful colors. Add an extra touch of elegance with the Linen Window Panel with Lace. The unusual lace edging provides extra definition while complementing the airy fabric.

Len.Ok’s collection of organic drapes includes panels, cafe, ruffled, tie-top, and tab top options. ichcha

ichcha has not been rated.

Price Range: $48–$80

Founded by three sisters, the New York-based brand ichcha (a Sanskrit word meaning “wish”) aims to support traditional craftsmanship in India. They offer a collection of stunning block printed clothes, accessories, and home textiles.

The sisters travel to India at least once a year to work closely with the artisan families who bring their designs to life. Ichcha partners with local NGOs to support artisan communities with health and education programs, and 100% of the profits from their “ichcha for artisan” collection goes back to the artisans who created the products.

From the vibrant Shanti Red Curtain Panel to the calming green hues of the Meadow Curtain Panel, the brand’s block printed ethical curtains are some of the most stunning we’ve seen. The beautiful designs are block printed by hand onto lightweight, chemical-free cotton fabric, which is hand-dyed using natural sustainable dyes.

Organic Habitat

Organic Habitat has not been rated.

Price Range: $39–$190

Organic Habitat is a US-based brand founded by passionate artisans Palak and Renisha. They specialize in handmade curtains in a huge selection of different colors and styles.

Their curtains include hemp, linen, and organic cotton (GOTS-certified) curtains. You’ll also find a smaller selection of synthetic velvet and raw silk curtains, which we recommend avoiding.

If you’re looking for organic blackout curtains, you’re in luck. Their Organic Linen Blackout Curtains feature GOTS-certified organic linen and an OEKO-TEX-certified polycotton blackout liner. While virgin polyester isn’t on our sustainable fabric list, the OEKO-TEX certification at least means you can sleep easy knowing these are non-toxic blackout curtains.

How We Chose The Best Organic Curtains

Ever thought about chemicals or poor labor practices when drawing the curtains? We hadn’t either until recently…so much for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Just like with other home textiles (think: eco-friendly mattresses, sustainable bedding, and organic bath towels), drapes made from plastic and chemicals can be bad for our health and that of the environment. They can contain toxic chemicals, like PVC phthalates and VOCs, which affect the indoor air quality in our homes—hence why organic AND non-toxic curtains are so important.

As always, we wanted to draw those drapes wide open and shed some light (pun intended) on healthier and more sustainable alternatives. Here are the eco-friendly curtain criteria we used as well as some certifications to look for so that you won’t be blindsided by greenwashing.

Materials:

Synthetic materials are never good (unless they’re recycled, that is). We don’t like them in our ethical underwear, sustainable pillows, or our window dressings.

For sustainable shade, we’d much rather use natural materials like organic cotton, linen, or hemp fabric (which all require little to no pesticides and water to grow), or semi-synthetics like bamboo fabric, lyocell fabric, and modal fabric.

While recycled sustainable curtains that make use of waste already in existence are acceptable, they’re still second to biodegradable fabrics—which is why we’d rather opt for organic curtains that won’t be harmful if left to break down in the environment.

Supply chain & labor practices:

We like natural fiber curtains that keep sunlight out but illuminate transparent manufacturing practices. Going beyond sweatshop-free factories, it’s great to see exactly where materials are sourced and how workers are supported with safe conditions and fair wages.

Green business practices:

Drapery made from eco-friendly materials can make a room pop in a planet-friendly way, but it’s great when a brand does even more.

Carbon offset programs and eco-friendly packaging are two of our favorite green business practices, but the possibilities here are practically endless.

From product recycling programs to using renewable energy, some brands are going to great lengths to get down to the dirty details and reduce their carbon footprint

Community & charitable giving:

While small brands don’t always have the capacity to join that inspiring ranks of brands that give back, we love it when they try.

Whether they provide extra support to workers, donate some of their profits to NGOs, or plant trees, caring curtain brands help us feel extra cozy.

Final Thoughts On Organic Window Curtains

Whether you’re blocking the sun or looking for a little extra privacy, choosing the right curtains goes beyond looking for a color or pattern that matches the room. It also means considering how they were made, who they were made by, and with what materials.

You can help draw the curtains on unsustainable materials and unethical manufacturing practices by supporting these sustainable curtain brands. Don’t forget to scour your local or online thrift stores for budget- and eco-friendly curtain rods, curtains, and drapes, before buying new ones.
