Why go Thrifting in Tulsa?

Tulsa isn’t just a place with fantastic thrift stores, it’s a city that’s increasingly serious about keeping stuff out of landfills. Programs like The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The M.e.t.) operate drop-off / recycling centers all over the metro (Bixby, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Collinsville, Glenpool, Sand Springs, Central Tulsa, Downtown, plus an affiliate in Owasso) so people have accessible ways to recycle not just cans and paper, but e-waste, lightbulbs, and other tricky items.

Another big piece of the picture is Green Vision Recycling, a Tulsa-based organization whose “Okies for Okies” program ensures donated clothing and shoes stay in-state for reuse or redistribution.

Businesses and nonprofits are getting on board too. For example, The Sustainability Alliance (formerly Sustainable Tulsa) has helped companies and organizations in Tulsa improve waste, energy, water practices. In the last 8 years they’ve helped entities avoid tens of thousands of tons of landfill waste.

And Tulsa’s reuse / donation community also has strong wins: Green Country Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Tulsa reported diverting 3.2 million pounds of reusable furniture and household items from landfill during one recent Earth Day drive.

By thrifting, donating, or choosing reused goods instead of buying new (and avoiding fast fashion for example), Tulsans contribute directly to these positive trends. Each piece of clothing or furniture kept out of a landfill is one less demand on new manufacturing, one less transportation burden, and one more chance to support local nonprofits, reuse businesses, and neighborhood economies.

So when you finish reading this list of Tulsa’s top thrift stores, consider this: next time you need something, whether it’s a shirt, a chair, or a kitchen gadget, first visit one of these shops. Donate what you no longer need. Spread the word. And help Tulsa push its already-strong momentum even further toward a culture of reuse & sustainability rather than single-use disposal.

Not a local? Not to worry. Some have online shops and there are other platforms to sell clothes online.
