Comfy rugs may feel nice to the touch but their footprint is anything but soft on the planet. Let’s (responsibly) replace those planet-killing synthetic messes with the most sustainable rugs around.
For this list, we’ve focused on the following sustainability credentials: lower impact materials (like organic cotton, recycled materials, New Zealand sourced wool, hemp and jute), safe and fair conditions for workers and greener business practices.
Our new Brand Rating System now takes this further across 22 different criteria, including things like climate action and customer safety. To learn more about this new system, take a look at our explainer here and look out for the rug brands on the list below that have taken that extra step to get rated, providing us with so much more transparency around their sustainability initiatives and progress.
We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.

The cotton features eco-friendly dyes while the Woolable wool rugs are undyed and get their color from the natural coats of different sheep.
Products are handmade by a team of mostly women artisans based in India in an ISO9001, 14001, and 18001-certified factory.
Our Personal Review Of Lorena Canal’s Rugs
“Because our décor and lounge are one of many themes and colors, we opted for their Woolable Rug Autumn Breeze. The minimalist color palette of sandstone and almond frost provided an understated complement. We love feel the soft wool beneath our feet. Admittedly, we’ve had many a night just lounging on the rug with our dog (picture above!).
We chose the Path of Nature rug for our 2 year old and it has provided a creative platform for him for hours on end with it’s little river and tufts – it’s been great for creative, imaginative play whilst encouraging an appreciation for nature (trying to lessen the emphasis on monster trucks…face palm)”
