Images by Liforme

About Liforme

Price Range: $23–$70

Liforme’s mission hinges on developing eco-friendly yoga equipment that’s durable when in use and biodegradable at its end of life.

Easier said than some of yoga’s top poses.

With a revolutionary top surface, visible alignment system and top-quality materials, this UK brand sells yoga mats (in XL down to kids size), water bottles, yoga mat sprays, and yoga pads to cushion your elbows and knees while at your favorite hardwood floor yoga studio.

These cushy mats aren’t just kind on the joints, but on the senses, too, thanks to their bright and happy colorations—like Rainbow Hope Yellow.

Liforme’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Tadasana on toxic chemicals?

No, thanks.

To achieve a surface as non-slip as it is non-toxic, Liforme tried and tested various materials, finally landing on their current product.

Their PVC-free yoga pads and mats are made out of a natural rubber bottom layer, a thin felt pad, and printed with eco-friendly inks on a non-toxic polyurethane top.

Each water bottle is made of 100% stainless steel with a 100% silicone band, and 100% polypropylene grippy body that is BPA free.

Supply chain & labor practices

Sourcing quality materials from reputable sources can be a slippery slope (much like yoga mats themselves), but Liforme found ways to solve both with a traceable, ethical supply chain.

This Certified B Corp warns against copies or fakes of their products made in questionable factories in China.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Plastic-free packaging paves the way for an eco-friendly yoga practice from the first roll up to the last.

Speaking of shipping, 99% of Liforme’s products have been shipped via the sea instead of air, heavily reducing their carbon footprint

Community & charitable giving:

Liforme supports charity partners such as Tree-Nation, the RSPCA, and Friends of the Earth, to which partial proceeds of sales of their “Purple Earth” yoga mat collection go directly.

If purple isn’t your hue, their Tiger yoga mat supports the WWF.

They also support funds like Yoga Gives Back, which assists women and children in impoverished India, providing micro-loans and granting access to better education.

Chicago-based Bean Products has been manufacturing sustainable home goods and wellness products for decades.

In addition to the tools to support your downward dog, they support your actual dog with other products like organic dog beds and other human-sized home wares (pillows, non-toxic shower curtains, etc).

9. Ekotex Yoga

9 Eco-Friendly Yoga Accessories To Prop Up Your Sustainable Practice Images by Ekotex Yoga #ecofriendlyyogaaccessories #ecofriendlyyogaprops #sustainableyogaaccessories #sustainableyogaprops #ecofrinedlyyogaequipment #sustainablejungle
Images by Ekotex Yoga

About Ekotex Yoga

Price Range: $9–$199

Founder Abbie Sweet was an expectant mother working at a different yoga company that was closing its doors.

After starting Ekotex Yoga in its place, Abbie realized that much of what she was receiving was swimming in plastic packaging and material. As a new mom, by this point, she knew she wanted her footprint to be much, much smaller on the world she was creating for her son.

That’s why Ekotex Yoga sells yoga blocks, bricks, bolsters, cushions, straps, belts, eye pillows, yoga blankets, and yoga towels made almost entirely of natural materials.

Ekotex Yoga’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

The main goal is to create a yoga brand with nature at its core—literally in the case of their spelt or buckwheat hull-filled eco-friendly yoga bolsters, sustainably-harvested kapok pillows, and lavender and flaxseed eye pillows.

All exterior fabric of their organic yoga bolsters, along with their belts, blankets, and towels, are made of organic cotton from GOTS-certified suppliers in India.

Most of their blocks and bricks are made of natural cork, though one brick is crafted of Douglas fir, grown in Fife, Scotland. The remaining recycled yoga blocks are made of recycled EVA foam.

Their sandbags are made with organic cotton covers stuffed with Marble pea shingle.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The hulls from spelt and buckwheat grain processing are a crucial piece of their bolster pillow, and their filling is a key player in supporting local farms in Scotland that would otherwise have no use for the product.

Ekotex partners with GOTS certified factories and ensures each of their employees in Scotland are paid a fair, living wage.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Peace out, plastic packaging; Ekotex uses recyclable paper, cardboard boxes, and paper tape.

Community & charitable giving:

Ekotex Yoga supports Plastic Bank and Eden Reforestation through the sustainability consulting firm, Greenspark.

They also regularly donate to food banks and anti-trafficking organizations like Yoga Stops Traffick

How We Chose The Best Sustainable Yoga Accessories

Props are meant to keep your body safe and supported when attempting poses you may not be ready to do unassisted.

Outside of functionality, this is what we looked for in the best eco-friendly yoga accessories

Many of the eco-friendly yoga props that help you perfect your daily ashtanga practice can be made with sustainable fabrics, like cork, hemp, and organic cotton or recycled cotton.

For foam-based blocks, EVA and ABS are two non-toxic varieties, but they still don’t have nearly as good end-of-life prospects as cork yoga blocks.

For yoga blankets, bolsters and non-toxic yoga mats, we looked for recycled fibers or natural materials, like organic cotton, buckwheat hulls, and flaxseed.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Many of these brands use traditional crafting techniques, locally sourced materials, and small supply chains through which they provide employment opportunities for disadvantaged folks, rural artisans, and women.

For larger brands, we look for transparency in the form of factory locations and statements regarding the fair treatment and safe working conditions for their employees.

For those whose manufacturing details were a little lacking, we will or already have reached out to learn more.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Going beyond sustainable materials really helps us find zen.

That’s why we sought brands providing an option for repairing or upcycling old yoga mats, shipping eco-friendly yoga props plastic free, and accounting for their impact by supporting carbon offset programs.

We always feel extra empowered (by which we mean more thigh burn) in goddess pose knowing our practice is aided by women-owned and operated companies.

Community & charitable giving:

We (hand)stand behind brands that are all about karma. Yoga brands that give back are staying true to the practice and its spiritual roots.

Many of these companies donate products or time to various environmental and social organizations.

Final Thoughts on Eco-Friendly Yoga Blocks & Bolsters

If you’re in need of a block, bolster, or blanket, avoid those that stretch the limits of our planet’s resources.

Especially since it’s so easy to replace plastic and foam with natural alternatives.

Did we help awaken your chakras? Or rather provide some degree of enlightenment on what makes a sustainable yoga prop?

If you’re not all the way there yet, that’s okay—just like yoga, sustainable living is a journey that’s all about doing what you can.

If you know anyone else who could benefit from nama-staying away from unsustainable props, feel free to spread the word—or rather this eco-friendly yoga accessories list—at your next yoga class.
