7 Eco Friendly Diapers For the Most Sustainable Baby Bottoms

Dirty diaper? Dirty planet.

Look, we know you don’t want to spend more time thinking about diapers than you have to—especially considering a parent will change around 2,500 of them in just.one.year.

Diapers are doing us dirty and for anyone looking to raise a zero waste baby, the issue shouldn’t be at the bottom (pun definitely intended) of our priority list.

None of us want to examine diapers up close, but it’s what we have to do.

Don’t worry, we brought the nose plugs!

We’re looking for eco friendly diapers (sans chemicals), making them better for babies with allergies or sensitivities. And that’s exactly what Bambo Nature does in their disposable diapers.

If you’re ready to go full-on zero waste diapers, make the leap to cloth diapers with these brands: Momgaroo makes use and reuse of all-natural, sustainable fabrics. Esembly’s are also reusable and they have an innovative resale and recycle program to keep their diapers out of the landfill.

About ECO by Naty

With plant-based diapers from ECO by Naty you can say bye-bye to oil-based plastics.

This Swedish brand is all about high-tech eco.

Striving to create a diaper made with plant-based and compostable ingredients, they overcame many barriers to become one of the leading eco diaper brands globally.

They’re even recommended by 4 out of 5 dads!

ECO by Naty’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Made with 55% plant-based materials (FSC-certified wood pulp), these diapers are certified vegan, OEKO-TEX 100, and include TÜV Austria certified biobased ingredients.

While not home compostable, these nappies are 100% ISO/IEC 17025 biodegradable, as certified by lab analysis from the Biobased and Biogenic Carbon Testing Laboratory they provided for us.

Still, they’re some of the most sustainable disposable diapers since they’re made without more than the 200 common chemicals often used.

This also reduces the risk of allergies and diaper rash while still keeping babies dry and comfortable.

Supply chain & labor practices:

We’ll be reaching out to inquire where/how these diapers are manufactured.

Green business practices:

Packaging is made from plant-based materials and the brand is happy to share their sustainability report, which is worth a peep if sustainable diapers have been on your mind.

While their femcare line, our nappy disposal bags and our wipes are fully compostable, their eco friendly baby diapers can not yet be composted at home.

They are currently exploring solutions to make this happen.

Community & charitable giving:

ECO wants other companies to join them, so instead of hiding their ingenuity with patents, they encourage other companies to adapt and make the market better for babies and our planet.

About Momgaroo

North Carolina-based Momgaroo has satisfied more than 2,000 parents (and babies) on Etsy.

Owner Veronica was inspired to create her own organic cloth diapers after successfully using them on her second child.

The cost and waste associated with disposable diapers was just another good reason to make a healthy alternative.

Problem was, she went overboard with her own cloth diapers—so much so that her husband forced her to get rid of some!

She began selling, and the rest is history.

Momgaroo makes only eco friendly diapers sets of 6, 12, 24, or 36 packs, in an equally wide range of colors. They are one-size-fits-all, with an easy and adjustable snap closure suitable for newborns to 3-year-olds.

Momgaroo’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Momgaroo sustainable reusable diapers come with three insert choices (or four, if you opt for no insert): microfiber, organic hemp, or organic charcoal bamboo insert—all with different absorbency benefits.

The charcoal bamboo insert is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, which prevents skin irritation.

Additionally, bamboo is naturally deodorizing, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and fast-drying.

Hemp fiber, on the other hand, is strong, soft, and water-absorbent. Interestingly, trapped air in the hemp fibers is warmed by the body, which can actually help keep your baby snug in cooler weather.

There is also a 100% organic hemp diaper which includes the hemp inserts (our top pick for the most sustainable diaper by Mongaroo).

The outer layer of the diapers are made with a waterproof washable and reusable PUL, and feature a soft suede cloth inner layer that’s gentle for babies.

All options are machine washable.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The family-operated team includes Veronica (who handmakes the diapers) and her three assistants—her son Henry as the photography assistant, daughter Chloe as the shipping assistant and model, and son Rufus, the baby who loves showing off his diapered bottom.

About Esembly

Made by parents for parents, “Veteran experts of Diaperkind”.

Esembly is responsible for creating some of the most eco friendly diapers out there.

How the brand began is a relatable and funny-in-hindsight story. A subway ride and an exploding diaper followed by tears, for both mom and baby.

This was the inspiration which eventually drove founder Liz Turrigano to look for alternatives.

Liz later recruited two friends and they put their minds together to develop a line of reusable diapers that are comfortable and effective at preventing leaks.

They offer both completely washable reusable diapers or, for on-the-go diapering, biodegradable cloth diaper liners.

Esembly’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Their landfill-free diapers are made with GOTS-certified organic cotton, along with an adorable waterproof top layer that has fun colors and prints (everything can be purchased separately).

The organic cotton inner provides a unique layered core that’s effective at keeping babies dry.

Even better, this inner layer has been designed to clean easily in the washing machine and dry quickly (minimizing the amount of energy required).

The outer layer is waterproof and breathable and made from OEKO-TEX certified recycled fabric made out of 100% post-consumer plastic bottles (along with a waterproof TPU laminate).

For eco friendly overnight diapers, add a super-absorbent diaper booster made from stay-dry fleece and organic cotton. This “overnighter” is designed to keep your baby peacefully sleeping through the night.

Esembly’s disposable version of their diaper liners are made with 100% bamboo viscose and, while they are biodegradable, they should not be flushed down the toilet.

You can’t compost diapers at home either, so use these sparingly.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Esembly responsibly produces their reusable cloth diapers in Pakistan and China.

The woman-owned business is committed to high-quality, low impact, and sustainably grown ingredients—in addition to responsible manufacturing.

Green business practices:

The best eco friendly diapers are those that don’t end up in landfills.

Thanks to their resale and recycle program, Esembly bags and diapers can be sold back to the company to be properly recycled in exchange for a digital gift card.

Their commitment to babies, bottoms, and the planet is clear down to the diapering of diapers in 100% recycled and fully recyclable materials for shipping.

Community & charitable giving:

Esembly is a member of 1% for the Planet.

NubMuby makes reusable cloth diapers ensuring your baby’s bottom will only be in contact with natural cotton—keeping them comfy and dry.

The hook and loop diapers come in a variety of colors and should fit any baby from around eight pounds to 36 pounds.

The inserts are removable and all layers are machine washable.

NubMuby diapers have provided comfort and support to over 2,000 happy Etsy customers (and their babies, of course) with an average 5-star review.

NubMuby’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

The eco friendly cloth diapers from NubMuby feature a cotton liner along with a microfiber and waterproof shell.

The outer shell is made from a PUL material. The removable inserts are made from microfiber, and contain three layers.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The family-owned brand is based in Northern California (as far as shipping in concerned) but they sew out all their diaper designs in China through a factory they rent out when the normal workers are on vacation (saving them from buying machinery) The family that owns the factory have been sewing diapers for over 20 years, and they’re actually close friends with them and have been with one of the owners since childhood.

Most of their materials come from Asia, which reduces the amount of shipping at the manufacturing stage.

About Bambo Nature

For more than 30 years, Bambo Nature has been redefining the standards of natural baby products for nature’s greatest little miracles.

They carry everything to get you through those formative years, including leak proof diapers, wipes, skincare, and training pants (when they outgrow the diaper).

There are two choices for eco friendly disposable diapers: Classic or Love, which features a thinner core design and has been certified by Asthma Allergy Denmark.

Bambo Nature’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Certified by Nordic Eco-label and FSC, both diaper varieties are made of plant-based polyethylene (instead of petroleum-based plastic) and sustainably harvested pulp.

What sets Bambo Nature apart from other diaper brands is the fact that their eco-friendly and allergy friendly diapers have been dermatologically tested by ProDERM and ATC GmbH.

They never use dyes, parabens, chemicals, or perfumes, which means that their products are free of all known allergens.

Supply chain & labor practices:

While they have been evaluated to be safe on babies, Bambo Nature does not test on animals.

These diapers are made in an ethically sound Danish factory.

Green business practices:

Bambo Nature voluntarily undergoes environmental inspections for every single product, and they use criteria based on the entire life cycle—from the sourcing of raw materials to product disposal.

Because of these evaluations, Bambo Nature’s parent company Abena uses a super-efficient diaper machine that allows them to reduce their energy consumption.

They also take steps to minimize their other types of resource consumption and are able to recycle 95% of waste.

They even collect powder and dust from their plant to be responsibly used elsewhere.

Bambo Nature’s packaging is also designed with minimal resource requirements in mind, and most can be either recycled or composted.

WHY BUY THE MOST ECO FRIENDLY DIAPERS?

Disposable diapers make up around 2% of landfill waste in the U.S.

The US alone throws away 20 billion disposable diapers to the tune of 3.5 million tons every year.

Add the fact that traditional diapers take around 500 years to decompose, and you’ve got a lot of literal sh*t piling up in landfills around the world.

But what about the waste we don’t see, like the 100 different viruses that may enter nearby groundwater every time a diaper is thrown away. Or the potentially harmful chemicals that make diapers absorbent.

Completing the wasteful trifecta, disposable diapers are putting that college tuition fund down the toilet too.

Until your baby’s potty trained, those single-use toilet bags will rack up a grand total of around $2,000

Granted, reusable cloth diapers have their drawbacks (namely, they’re a little more gross, in that you have to actually wash them) but they are a better pick from a zero waste baby standpoint.

Be sure to wash them with zero waste laundry detergent and while we’re usually proponents of washing in cold water to save energy, you’ll definitely want to use hot water here.

HOW WE FOUND THE BEST ECO FRIENDLY DIAPERS

There’s a lot of s*** in the diaper industry; and no, we’re not just talking about the stuff in used diapers.

As a new parent, you’re already faced with a gazillion decisions about how to support that adorable, snuggly, constantly-pooping mini human in your life.

So the easiest way to think about this one is from the sustainable fashion standpoint.

The same materials that you end up wearing on your body, the same way your clothes are produced, and the same ethical practices of your favorite fashion brands can help inform the choices you make for your baby.

Plus, have you seen how fashionable some of these reusable diapers are?!

Materials:

Most diapers are made with plastic. Since traditional synthetic fabrics are not the most sustainable fabrics, we like to see diapers with mostly plant-based plastic, recycled plastic, or none at all.

Instead of polypropylene, polyethylene, and bleach, these brands use plant-based plastics and sustainably-harvested pulps processed without the use of excessive chemicals.

For sustainable cloth diapers (the most sustainable option), organic cotton, linen, bamboo, or hemp is the way to go.

A recycled-plastic bottle outer layer is the best way to make the diaper both leak-proof and low-waste, but most of these options are still using PUL.

  • Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Vegan, FSC, Nordic Eco-Label

Supply chain and labor practices:

Responsible manufacturing hasn’t really made it into the sustainable diaper discussion just yet, but we are happy that some brands are considering it and share where their products are made.

Most of these brands are also small (as small as one person who handmakes everything!) so labor practices aren’t really an issue.

Green business practices:

In addition to using sustainable materials, some brands are using eco-conscious manufacturing practices, repurposing waste, minimizing water and energy requirements, using eco-friendly packaging, and implementing programs to responsibly recycle/dispose of old diapers.

Community & charitable giving:

Not too much to report on here, but like your babies, they’ll grow in time.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON YOUR SUSTAINABLE BABY DIAPERS

Doody calls!

And now you know how to take care of it in a way that’s better for bums and better for the planet.

We know that changing diapers is hard enough, so we certainly don’t want to burden you any further.

If reusable cloth diapers are a hurdle you’re not sure you’re ready to jump through, consider trying them out part-time when you’re home. Save the disposable diapers for outings or when your child’s at daycare or with a babysitter.

There’s also nothing wrong with experimenting. See what works best for you, your baby, and your budget.

Parenting is a journey and there’s no poofect solution.
