Why Choose Non-Toxic Wallpapers?

First, is vinyl wallpaper toxic?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can evaporate into the air and potentially have adverse health effects. Traditional wallpaper adhesives and materials may contain VOCs, which can contribute to poor indoor air quality and may cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and other health problems. Common VOCs found in wallpaper include formaldehyde and benzene.

As such, conventional vinyl and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) wallpapers, while popular for their durability and affordability, can pose potential health and environmental risks due to the presence of harmful chemicals, such as:

  • Phthalates: Phthalates are plasticizers commonly used to make PVC flexible. These chemicals have been linked to various health issues, including reproductive and developmental problems. Phthalates can leach out of PVC products over time and may contribute to indoor air pollution.
  • Lead: Lead-based pigments may be used in the production of vinyl wallpaper, posing a serious health risk, particularly in homes with young children. Lead exposure is associated with developmental issues and neurological problems.
  • Chlorine: The production and disposal of PVC involve the release of chlorine gas and dioxins, which are highly toxic compounds. Dioxins can persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, posing long-term risks to both human health and ecosystems.
