At the end of a long day, there’s nothing better than a nice, hot shower. That is…until you realize what’s in many conventional body washes…
But is there a natural organic body wash that won’t wash our skin’s natural biome down the drain?
Sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium chloride, cocamide MEA, fragrance, aphanizomenon flos-aquae extract, PPG-9, Blue 1, propylene glycol, methylchloroisothiazolinone… Wait a second, are we taking a shower or a chemistry class?
We don’t know about you but we’d rather not let our skin soak up these sci-fi synthetics. Take a look at these natural body scrubs and washes that pamper your skin without impacting your body or the planet.
As we refresh our articles in the coming months, we’ll be employing our new Brand Rating System to scrub up on what we look for in an eco-friendly personal care brand and see where they stand on climate action and environmental impact. The Best Non-Toxic Body Wash Brands Scrubbing Up The Soap Industry
With no synthetic fragrances and a low carbon footprint, it’s plain to see that Plaine Products’ natural body wash is one of the best body washes you’ll find. The Rosemary, Mint, + Vanilla scent is an SJ favorite.
We are also rooting for EcoRoots’ moisturizing organic body wash for women and men made from coconut oil and other skin-loving essential oils.
We can’t forget Blueland’s Coconut Milk powdered body wash, which we found super easy to mix up into an ultra-creamy low impact lather. The compostable refill packaging makes it one of the best for sustainable scrubbing.

Plaine Products
Plaine Products’ Organic Lavender Body Wash
Price Range: $30–$35
Given the harsh chemicals in most body washes, Plaine Products’ organic moisturizing body wash is one we’re more than happy to say yes to. After all, it does contain biodegradable ingredients that have been carefully chosen to avoid anything that’s deemed toxic or unsafe by the Environmental Working Group.
Naturally deeming sulfates, parabens, and artificial fragrances as duds (er, suds) in their formulas, their gentle formula relies instead on coconut-derived surfactants and natural extracts.
Available in Rosemary, Mint, + Vanilla and Citrus Lavender, the organic body wash is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, and safe for babies (no tears). Best of all, their sustainable packaging comes courtesy of a recyclable and reusable aluminum tube.
About Plaine Products
Plaine Products lays down the problem in plain English: plastic is destroying our planet. That’s why they make plastic-free personal care products that use eco-friendly, natural, and chemical-free ingredients only (like natural shampoo and conditioner).
The Certified B Corp is transparent not only about their ingredients but also about their sustainability efforts. Which, in part, inspires their active participation in 1% for the Planet. They have donated over $530 million to numerous environmental partners around the globe.
My Personal Review of Plaine Products’ Body Wash:
“Plaine Products’ Rosemary, Mint, + Vanilla scented body wash is one of my favorite body washes. I love the fast-foaming convenience of the liquid and the fact that it isn’t literally watered down with water and other synthetic fillers. Plus, the scent is heavenly, the perfect combination of sweet and refreshing.”

Brixy
Brixy’s All-Natural Body Wash For Sensitive Skin
Price Range: $6
Kiss (and cleanse) synthetic fragrance and irritated skin goodbye once and for all, with Brixy’s natural body wash for women, men, and kids. Designed for both hand and body use, their organic vegan body wash bars nourish and deeply moisturize all skin types—including sensitive skin.
The cruelty-free cleanse is courtesy of an omnipotent, hydrating base of coconut oil and shea butter—plus a few natural oils that help the body wash smell amazing (like Citrus, Coconut Vanilla, or Mint Eucalyptus.)
Their long-lasting bars also make for some of the most affordable non-toxic body wash around.
About Brixy
From working in an NIH-funded lab to creating a company solving problems created by endocrine-disrupting chemicals, the founder of Brixy knows a thing or two about the hazards of conventional skin care chemicals.
He decided to dedicate his life to creating non-toxic remedies, like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Focused on more than just plastic-free products themselves, the brand is proactive about educating consumers, media, retailers, and other product companies about these harmful chemicals.
Social responsibility is the core of the business, with donations supporting organizations like the Environmental Working Group, Breast Cancer Fund, and the American Red Cross.
My Personal Review of Brixy’s Body Wash Bars:
“Brixy’s Body Wash Bars are a game-changer! They lather up so well and leave my skin feeling soft and nourished, with no harsh chemicals involved. The scents are all gorgeous, but Eucalyptus Mint is my favorite. It makes my shower feel like a mini spa experience—at least for the 7 minutes of hot water my tiny tank lets me have!”

Blueland
Blueland’s Clean & Non-Toxic Body Wash
Price Range: $12–$15
Blueland’s body wash is a unique waterless powdered formula packed with plant-based, hydrating ingredients that have been dermologically tested for a hypoallergenic, irritation-free clean.
Vitamin E, Oats, Kaolin Clay, and Coconut Amino Acids are a few of their key ingredients. Available in Waterdew Lily, Coconut Milk, and Sandalwood Sage, the non-toxic body washes will leave our planet feeling good, and your skin smelling great.
Simply mix the powder with 18 oz of water to make one full bottle of the creamy formula.
The sustainable suds have Cradle to Cradle, Leaping Bunny, and MADE SAFE certification.
About Blueland
A reputable supplier of refillable cleaning products, this zero waste brand has a clean record. Believing “a cleaner planet starts at home”, Blueland has planet-friendly powders for just about everything, including hand soap.
The products have collectively diverted over 1 billion single-use plastics from landfills. As well as a ton of carbon from the atmosphere, considering the Certified B Corp is also proudly certified Carbon Neutral (shipping included).
My Personal Review of Blueland’s Body Wash Starter Set:
“Blueland sold me on the scent “Coconut Milk”, but after actually testing this powdered shower wash, I really fell in lather love. It’s super easy to use, lathers really well, and washes off without leaving any residue or greasy film on my skin. When it runs out, I love that I can just order a refill in a compostable paper envelope and add it to my lifetime bottle.”

Ethique
Ethique’s Men’s & Women’s Natural Organic Body Wash
Price Range: $6–$13
We’ve already talked about how Ethique can sustainably take care of our zero waste shampoo needs, but what about suds for our delicate skin? Thankfully, they know how to preserve a skin barrier with some of the best natural body wash bars.
Lime & Ginger. Sweet Orange & Vanilla. Matcha, Lime & Lemongrass. Lavender & Peppermint. Any refreshing scent is sure to please. If you can’t decide on just one (who could blame you) try their sample box to avoid getting stuck with a scent you’re not in love with for a long time.
We’re all for an exfoliating body cleanser, which is why this Spearmint Pumice Bar is our favorite. If you can’t get behind bars, their Gentle Bodywash Concentrate works just as well.
Fully made with natural and organic ingredients, both body washes are good enough to eat (err, drink?). We wouldn’t recommend it though, even if they are cruelty-free and vegan and made with sustainably sourced, biodegradable, naturally derived, and palm oil-free ingredients.
About Ethique
Ethique is one of those non-toxic personal care brands with ethics. The living wage employers prioritize direct trade. Bars are their pièce de résistance and, because of them, they’ve prevented more than 9 million plastic bottles from being manufactured.
They’re definitely one of our favorite plastic-free Certified B Corps, especially because they’re a climate-neutral company that donates 2% of their profits to charity and plants a tree for every order made online. Plus, their range of eco-friendly bathroom products is so vast, you can make yours a whole Ethique emporium!
EcoRoots
EcoRoots’ Organic Sensitive Skin Body Wash
Price Range: $13
EcoRoots’ certified organic body wash bars contain no parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, dyes, or hard-to-pronounce ingredients. Just 100% plant-based, vegan, and mostly certified organic ingredients like organic coconut, sunflower, and safflower oils and herbal extracts.
For example, our personal favorite, the Peppermint Soap, features both peppermint oil and menthol. Two key ingredients for a potent peppermint bath (which we find is perfect for alleviating headaches in a steamy post-work shower).
Plus, the inclusion of wheat and barley grasses adds a texture that turns this creamy body wash into an exfoliating body cleanser, too. Each bar is cold-pressed by hand in small batches in the USA, and, like their shaving soap bars, they come plastic-free.
Since one bar can replace two whole bottles of liquid body wash, the affordable non-toxic body wash bars will gently cleanse without irritating sensitive skin (or sensitive finances!).
About EcoRoots
As one of our favorite zero waste online stores, EcoRoots offer a comprehensive collection of plastic-free bath, beauty, hair, and home essentials. All of which are cruelty-free, non-toxic, and largely organic, palm oil free and vegan (save for some third-party brand partners that use beeswax).
Everything is housed in compostable paper or reusable glass jars and also shipped in eco-friendly packaging. Profits from their natural body wash go toward their 1% for the Planet membership to support Ocean Conservancy and other planet-focused NGOs.

Conscious Skincare
Conscious Skincare’s Best Natural Body Wash For Men
Price Range: $18–$21
True to their name, Conscious Skincare makes some of the best organic body wash for sensitive skin in the business. Starting with their organic men’s body wash, an award-winning blend of Castile soap, jojoba oil, and bergamot, cinnamon, and frankincense essential oils. “Men’s scents” that lathering ladies are sure to enjoy, too.
And vice versa, with the women’s natural body wash scented in sweet orange, grapefruit, or Amyris, these “ladies’ scents” are some that anyone can get behind. The universally beloved choice is their organic unscented body wash.
All-natural body washes from CS start with organic and natural Castile soap, which is combined with organic glycerin (for ultra soft skin) and a variety of nourishing plant and herb oils. They’re all cruelty-free and vegan and come in glass bottles, with an optional plastic pump top.
We tested out the Absolute Shower, a multifunctional cleanser for hair, face, and body. It’s a game-changer, offering convenience without compromising on quality.
The eco-friendly packaging and refill options align perfectly with a sustainable lifestyle. This range is a must-try for anyone seeking effective, eco-conscious skincare solutions.
About Conscious Skincare
UK-based Conscious Skincare was founded by Rebecca, a sufferer of chronic dry skin who couldn’t find help in conventional products. So, she created her own range of award-winning organic skincare products (like body wash, organic face cream, and eco-friendly shampoo). All are free from palm oil, parabens, phthalates, and SLS.
Conscious not only about skincare, most products from the award-winning brand come in sustainable packaging, and many are available for refills.
Your section on Dr. Bronner’s has a bullet point saying “Palm oil free.” But in the text, it says there are “Fair trade organic coconut, palm, and olive oils…”
Which is it?
Hi Ken, good thing to clarify! I assume you mean the big text with the colourful boxes next to them? If so, the little red box means that this brand is NOT palm oil free as explained in the text. For more on what these colourful boxes mean, have a look at this article and this list which explains in more detail.
Excellent article. I am now embarking on the journey of waste-free body care and sharing most of these brands with my family.
