Say “I Do” to These 10 Sustainable and Eco Friendly Wedding Rings

With tears in your eyes, you say “I do.”

The diamond ring slides onto your ring finger right next to your ethical engagement ring. You look down to see all its beautiful luster shimmering in the sun.

You suddenly remember that thing you read about gold mining being one of the most destructive industries in the world…

Now it’s your wedding day and you’re getting cold feet—not about your beloved but about the ring they’re about to slide on your finger.

What environmental and social concerns are associated with it? Was it mined sustainably? Were workers paid fairly? Did they have safe working conditions? Was its production associated with armed conflict?

No one wants these thoughts running through their head on their big day.

To spare you the wedding day jitters, we’ve dug deep in the treasure chest of the internet to pull out the top sustainable wedding rings worth tying the knot with.

While we’d say “I do” to any of these brands, here are our top picks:

KBH Jewels produces stunning wedding rings using recycled metals and lab grown diamonds. The unique, recycled and fair trade wedding rings from Catbird shine both literally and ethically. Just one look at the antique wedding bands from Trumpet & Horn will elicit memories of days past and cement new memories of your special day for years to come.

Curious about how we sized up these eco friendly wedding rings?

About Taylor & Hart

Ask and you shall receive, and when you ask about fair trade and recycled gold and platinum, Taylor & Hart will make it happen.

Founders Taylor and Hart grew up in South Africa, so knowledge of neighboring Zimbabwe’s blood diamond industry incentivized this creative duo to do diamonds better,

That ethical commitment includes wedding bands, with or without diamonds.

With different widths, metals, profiles, and textures to choose from for their ethical eternity and wedding rings, any finger (man or woman) will be happy with a wedding band from Taylor & Hart.

Whether you want conflict free platinum wedding rings or one made of white, rose, or yellow gold, Taylor & Hart has offerings for all. Many of their pieces utilize recycled and fair trade metals.

If you’re looking for some of the most inexpensive environmentally friendly wedding rings, Etsy is a good place to start.

Etsy’s wedding ring range is as endless as your love. Choose from classic metal bands to gemstone pieces, to pieces made out of unique materials like wood.

While this can’t be said about all sellers, there are several using the Etsy platform who are going the extra step when it comes to quirky sustainable wedding rings.

Etsy’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

While the materials sections on Etsy will make your head spin, anything vintage, recycled, or natural is a good place to start. Here are just a couple of ring sellers offering sustainable options:

The rings from OriginHG have ethical ring options for men that use sustainable and salvaged wood pieces to make stunning wooden wedding bands.

ClaireAllain Designs is another great place for bespoke, handmade wedding bands. The rings are made using recycled/fair trade metals and conflict-free, ethically sourced gemstones.

Green business practices:

All emissions from shipping on Etsy are offset with their carbon offset program. Many of the sellers have their own green packaging promises, too.

WHY CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE AND FAIR TRADE WEDDING RINGS

The jewelry industry may thrive on shine, but beneath that sparkle is a lot of dirt and ugly practices.

The jewelry industry includes over 100 million people around the globe, many of whom face abuse by their employers.

Mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Explosives and unstable ground make fatal accidents an all too common occurrence.

Then there’s the lung problems and skin diseases which long term exposure to mining minerals can cause. At its most dangerous, mining exposes workers to toxic chemicals like cyanide and mercury.

Finally, rich mining areas are often rife with violent conflict.

Even at the cutting stage, workers are placed in danger by breathing in microscopic dust in poorly ventilated workshops. Eventually, breathing in diamond dust can cause Black Lung.

Then there’s the 1 million children working in the industry. And the people forcibly displaced and moved from their communities because they happen to live atop lucrative mining resources.

From an environmental standpoint, mining is absolutely devastating and leads to irreparably damaged biodiversity. It displaces huge amounts of earth, leads to toxic metal leaching into the local water table, and poisons the ecosystem for decades to centuries after.

Surely, all that isn’t part of your wedding plans…

HOW WE FOUND THE BEST ECO FRIENDLY WEDDING RINGS

Between caterers, photographers, and that annoying cousin who absolutely cannot sit next to your sister, weddings come with enough on their plate—which means you shouldn’t be ruminating on the origins of your wedding ring.

We’re glad these conscious wedding ring brands exist, but it took a lot of looking to find them.

Thankfully, we had our cornerstone sustainable and ethical fashion and ethical jewelry pieces to help us try brands on for size.

Materials:

Here’s what we’d welcome walking us down the aisle: recycled, repurposed, lab-grown, or conflict-free diamonds and gemstones.

For just a band, we‘re happy with brands who use fair trade or recycled metal, or who sell vintage pieces. Some of the most environmentally friendly wedding rings are simply those made of materials that already exist!

Supply chain and labor practices:

While they may not be on the guest list, it’s also important to think about the “who” behind the sparkle on the big day.

Our hearts certainly go pitter-patter for brands with super transparent supply chains and ethical labor standards. Practices like health care and benefits, fair pay, support for mining communities, and safe working conditions spell out L-O-V-E.

Green business practices:

Love can only last as long as our planet, which makes green business practices all the more important.

We’re a big fan of brands who not only use recycled or compostable packaging materials, but also consider the impact of manufacturing and take steps to reduce or recycle energy or water requirements. Carbon offsets are always a big plus.

Community & charitable giving:

Your big day of celebrations can bring about celebration around the globe—especially when you choose a brand that gives back to their local/global community through donations and projects that support mining communities.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON SUSTAINABLE AND ECO FRIENDLY WEDDING RINGS

You can have the ‘big day’ without the big (negative) bling.

If these brands tell us anything, it’s that the best eco friendly wedding rings can make your dream wedding even better.

While many out there will dull your day, there are ethical alternatives—we just have to rummage through the jewelry box.

And here’s the really inspiring news: the world of sustainable and ethical jewelry is only in its infancy. As more of us become conscious consumers, so too will the industry continue to change for the better.

So remember, every time you say “I do” to a brand that aligns with your values—be it for jewelry or the ethical lingerie you bought for your honeymoon—you’re supporting an industry that’s better for people and the planet.
