Carlee is a co-founder of Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS), an organization dedicated to amplifying the minority voices in the field of shark science. Originally from Detroit, MI, she moved to south Florida and received her B.S. in biology from Florida Atlantic University in 2016. She currently works as a marine turtle specialist, helping to protect sea turtles in Florida.
This past summer she received her M.S. in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University. Carlee’s master’s research examined how provisioning (feeding) tourism affects the behavior, habituation and abundance of nurse sharks in Belize. She continues to work in the field of shark science, working to increase diversity in this field.
We all basically came to the conclusion that we were unimaginably excited to find other black women that were shark scientists… and we also concluded that we wanted to change that.
