Since the U.S. Farm Bill of 2014, hemp went from “illegal” to “in-style”, and now the number of hemp clothing brands on the market are growing like, well… hemp.

Considering the plant’s low environmental impact and hemp fabric’s breathable, anti-microbial, UV-protective, and durable qualities, we’d say that’s a highly good thing.

But just because something is hemp-based doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a sustainable choice. So to save you from digging through the weeds, we’ve curated our favorite brands that not only use this fabric but also employ ethical labor and climate reduction practices.

We’re also rolling out our new Brand Rating System to extend what we look for in a brand to a variety of eco-related criteria. This considers things like farming impacts (chemicals, biodiversity, etc), as well as the impacts on global communities behind the manufacturing and sourcing. You can learn about our methodology here.

We independently research all featured brands and we ask them to confirm their claims. In many cases we personally review recommended products. This post contains affiliate links which means we may earn a commission if you buy something. Learn more here.

About Toad&Co.

Price Range: $45–$125

While their range includes many different natural and recycled materials, Toad&Co is a toad-ally good sustainable outdoor clothing brand for finding breezy, blended hemp duds for your weekend hiking adventures.

Their full range includes tops, bottoms, knitwear, dresses, and more—some of which we’ve tested ourselves—but we especially appreciate the timeless design of the Hemp Daybreaker Rugby, made from 80% organic cotton and 20% hemp.

Toad&Co.’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Their rain-fed hemp—grown in China with minimal pesticides and fertilizers—is often blended with GOTS-certified cotton, TENCEL™ lyocell or modal, and minimal elastane to give it the stretch needed for your adventuring. Many hemp garments are OEKO-TEX and bluesign®-approved.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Toad&Co. works with Hemp Fortex in China, which runs on solar power, is bluesign® certified, and provides fair wages. A strict Code of Conduct and regular factory visits prevent forced or child labor in their global factory partners.

Some items are produced in a factory in California, where they employ adults with disabilities through a partnership with Planet Access Company.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Renewable energy powers some factories, which, coupled with carbon offsetting efforts, reduces the impact of their manufacturing.

Toad&Co. partners with LimeLoop to offer reusable shippers at checkout. Other garments are shipped in 100% recycled paper packaging printed with water-based or algae ink.

Inclusivity:

Sizes include S-XXL (30-38) for men and XS-XL (0-14) for women.

About Patagonia

Price Range: $19–$239

Patagonia’s hemp clothing line is geared toward durable workwear, but you’ll also find more casual and outdoor sport-oriented hemp t-shirts, shorts, overalls, socks, pants, hats, tanks, and jackets.

For something we’ve personally tested and highly recommend, check out the Hampi Rock Pants. They’re an ultra-light and breathable blend of organic hemp, recycled polyester, and spandex (in the wide, stretchy waistband only).

Paired with the loose-legged design and durable weave, these are some of our favorite summer pants, whether we need a little extra sun protection on our legs while working in the garden or are just lounging around after a long day of doing so.

Patagonia’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Patagonia offers mostly hemp/cotton clothing (the cotton being either organic, regenerative organic, or recycled). Occasionally, to increase performance, they utilize some recycled polyester and TENCEL™.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The Footprint Chronicles tells which factory each garment was manufactured at, and the brand is taking steps to turn their 86% Fair Trade sewn line to 100%.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Rather than buying new, you can purchase some items used through Patagonia’s Worn Wear program. They will also repair or resell any damaged garment for free for life.

A whopping 98% of the line utilizes recycled fabrics, and many of their non-recycled materials are organic and regenerative—considering they piloted the world’s first regenerative agriculture certification program. They also turn some byproducts of their hemp crops into sustainable building materials.

Patagonia’s climate goals involve reducing emissions by supporting renewables and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, both for fabrics and in their supply chain.

Inclusivity:

Women’s run XS-XXL or 0-18 and men’s XS-3XL or 28”–44”.
